Just picked one of these up at JB Hi-Fi Hornsby NSW for $199.

They have about 20 or so in stock from what i could see. Seems to work great with the HDMI connection.

Well a w/e of limited playing has only provided one negative in my situation..

no Mute function..

a real pity as I bypass the internal tinny speakers of my LCD to some nice Logitech Surrounds and now have no control

overall the picture is very nice @ 1080i .. the above drawback is the only niggle

Moderately funny story. I went into the Sony Central shop in Myaree WA and asked how much this box was. Was told $599 but we can prob do a little better. I said I heard the new price was $199 and that other Sony stores interstate were selling them at that price. The guy was flabbergasted. He checked the computer and asked the manager. Neither knew about it and said the best they could do was $450. Bullshit or pure incompetance?

So I walked the 50m across the carpark to JB who had it for $199 and sold it to me for $190(hey, I'll take the 9 bucks)

did a similar thing with JB once myself. Was looking for my AV Receiver and someone on this Forum had picked up the model Yamaha for $450 I'd been salivating over, which apparently was at that price, that week only. I raced out and went to my local JB only to see the Yellow !! SALE !! price of $699 .. when I asked him for a better price he said $650 .. I told him .. how about $450 .. he just came back with Nah Ya Jokin cobba!.. then I told him to check his little book and come and see me, was a case of 'Mate I work here what would you know..' . .. his face when he checked his little book was worth $$$millions! He came back and gave me it for $450..

I bought one at JB Hifi in Cannington to replace my ailing Hotchip ODT4000 but I forgot to grab the HDMI to DVI adapter. So I am using component at the moment.

I do like the epg but it doesnt seem to have the extended epg that ABC and Nine here in Perth are broadcasting .

In the past I have bought a couple of really bargain items from Sony Central (the clearance store at DFO at Brisbane Airport) including DVD player, SD STB for a present, etc. Strikes me that because the Sony stores only do their own product they are somewhat out of touch with the trade in general? Looked in there the other week and they were clearing Bravia 40 inch LCDs (direct view not RP) for around 2k - the price you'd pay for a yum cha ... yet in other areas they seem to lose the plot entirely. In their own little world.

Anyone else having problems picking up channels with the dst-hd500? I'm using it with an indoor amplified antenna and can't pick up any channels. Well, i picked up Channel 7 once but now I can't pick it up again. My old hotchip hd set top box has no issues picking up channels with an indoor antenna, although it is in a different room.

Just because you get reception in one room, doesn't mean you'll get reception in another!

Didn't realise there was one there. It's actually a Videopro clearance store by the looks of things though. Might go and have a looksee

Yup just grabbed one from JB Hifi - awesome price, $198 (down from $398) is really all I could afford, so was expecting to have to get a DGTEC or something, about which I've heard rather mixed reviews.

I have no problems with mine. Infact the Sony handles impulse noise (lights being switched on or off) better than my hotchip did.

The Hotchip would squawk and chirp while the Sony just a little bit of pixellation and no interruption with the sound.

Just racked up a week with mine and had the footy prior 2000A, also have the Strong SD 5005 and Teac 420 SD and I can confirm the picture quality is second to none, no faults and agree that its receiver is strong enough to please anyone at this price. I used to think the strong had the edge on the teac in SD and found the Sony outperforms these older units by a country mile in SD. As for the quality on the PJ, it has left me gob smacked on HDMI which I didn't think would happen. yes I'm gloating but at this price, anyone who buys one will be in the same boat given the price drop from a year ago. Cheers

Hi, I am new to this forum and hope someone can help me. I just bought the Sony DST-HD500 today and I got a few Qs that I hope someone can help me.

1)When I turn the tuner on and did all the configuration it couldn't pick up any signals from Channel 7 at the Brisbane Area. (All the other stations are fine). So would it be a tuner problem or a software problem?

2) Do I have to turn the tuner off when I am not watching the TV or do I leave it on all the time? If I turn it off, does it matter?

3) When I use the tuners to watch the TV stations, how do i know which mode is the TV station broadcasting? ie 720i, 720p or 1080i?

4) I have been reading around the forums and the word 'STB' keeps on popping up, what does it stand?

Thank you very much for the help.

Agree - awesome box, got it hooked up via HDMI, and a coax output to surround speakers for when the show warrants it.

Outstanding box, my only whinge is that it doesn't do subtitles; not that I've found yet anyway. Turned on teletext and that mentions captions, but couldn't figure out how to activate them yet.

If it DOES actually lack subtitles, kinda bugs me, not because I use them that much, but because my SD box had them!

Love that I can control my telly with the same remote too :-)

1) Can't help you there unfortunately. I'm in Sydney, and mine works fine. Hopefully others here can assist.

2) Doesn't matter - I turn both telly and box off to save that little bit of power

3) I haven't figured that myself either. Using the little 'i' button, you can turn on the iPlate and that shows all those details, but not yet sure if that shows YOUR settings, or the network's. May well be the latter, as it shows if Teletext is available, which obviously isn't a setting on the box, it's whether the network has/provides it. I'll have to fiddle (ie change my settings to 720p and see if iPlate still shows 1080i, etc); maybe do the same, should at least show you which value iPlate shows (ie yours or the network's)

4) Set top box

Got one of these for my other tv from JB Hi Fi for $199 which seemed a great deal. Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to get a hold of the lastest firmware for this set top box? I wish to update it if its not running the latest.

Hope to hear from someone soon

Thanks!

Not quite to do with the Sony but I have since got myself a HDMI to DVI adapter from Jaycar for 14 dollars 95 way cheaper than JB's price for the same thing.

I did that too, but am disappointed to see that when you plug that in (its a big plug), there isn't enough room to fit the audio optical (TOSLINK) cable.

I guess that is because if you are using HDMI (which is a very small plug) then it carries the sound signal, but once you go to DVI that doesn't carry the audio. Can use the basic audio (red and white cables) but then you miss out on the 5.1 experience which is large part of the Hi Def thrill.....
