divinewrite Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 Hi, I have an LG 50PC3D. As discussed at http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtop...6&hl=50pc3d, I've had a few display issues when watching SD programs. The main one that has persisted (and really bugs me) is that the color in faces sometimes seems really granular or stripey. It's particularly prevalent in dark scenes or when the person is moving, and noticeable mostly on the jaw bone and other angled/rounded parts. Eg. it happens a lot in 'The Biggest Loser' when the camera pans across their faces during a closeup. I've been able to reduce the symptoms a little by turning XD off and reducing the contrast, but it hasn't eliminated the problem altogether. My questions are: Does anyone else have the same issue with their 50PC3D or similar display? Has anyone been able to resolve it with XD settings? (LG support suggested that I should tweak the XD settings to resolve it.) If so, what XD settings did you apply? i.e. What are the optimum XD settings? OR is this just something you have to put up with when you buy a display that doesn't upscale SD signal? Note that I did search before posting this, but as the two main key terms were "LG" and "XD", the search simply returned an error, 'cos it requires search terms to contain more than 2 characters. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Cheers. g'day I own the Lg 42pc1dg & have similar issues turning off the XD (contrast only) really did improve my image quality ,in particular, the contrast improved dramatically in dark scenes & shadows I read your previous post & agree with the banding issue which is noticable in fading colours. I havn't noticed yet whether the XD being off has improved this. my other settings are user1 contrast 60 brightness 90 colour 55 sharpness 30 temp medium XD contrast OFF colour ON sharpness ON good luck Edited March 29, 2007 by nato
divinewrite Posted April 2, 2007 Author Posted April 2, 2007 Thanks nato. My settings are slightly different to yours. I've spent quite a bit of time re-tweaking them over the weekend, and have found that the best settings for TV are: XD settings XD: Manual Contrast: Off Colour: Off Noise: On User 1 or 2 PSM settings Contrast: 60 Brightness: 75 Colour: 50 Sharpness: 0 For DVD, however, I've found the best settings are: XD settings As above User 1 or 2 PSM settings Contrast: 60 Brightness: 58 Colour: 50 Sharpness: 0 These settings don't entirely overcome the striping problem, but they do reduce it. Just wondering, nato, do you have an upscaling DVD player? If so, does it give you HD-type picture quality, or does it have the same sorts of problems as SD tv? Cheers.

No I don't have an upscaling DVD, do you? What upscaling DVD would you recommend? Does your Tv have the supposed problem with the inbuilt HD tuner only showing SD instead of true HD ? In My opinion , LG have fixed the problem (bought my set in Jan ) Those DVD brightness settings would be too dark for me Edited April 2, 2007 by nato
divinewrite Posted April 2, 2007 Author Posted April 2, 2007 No I don't have an upscaling DVD, do you? What upscaling DVD would you recommend? Yeah, I bought a Sony DVP-NS76H last week. Although every other review I've read is very positive, at this point, I certainly wouldn't recommend it. You'll find detailed discussion of my issues at http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtop...mp;#entry631595, but basically, I'm finding that even after upscaling, the picture quality has some of the same issues we've been discussing here. Not quite as bad, but too bad for my liking. The only one I'd recommend at this point is a modded original xbox with XBMC installed. I have that set up as well, and the upscaling is absolutely flawless. So far, it leaves the Sony for dead. Having said all of that, I'm beginning to suspect the real problem is that the Sony takes the upscaling to 80% (to pluck a figure out of the sky) and leaves a bit of SD-like signal in there. And because the LG plasma isn't very good at handling SD, it makes a bit of a meal of it. That's just my very uneducated guess. Does your Tv have the supposed problem with the inbuilt HD tuner only showing SD instead of true HD ? Nup, HD displays beautifully on mine. To compare on yours, check out what HD programs are showing when you read this (or can next test). Go to http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=28574. Those DVD brightness settings would be too dark for me I'm not convinced they're bright enough for me either. I THINK the issues get worse the brighter I make it, but I could be wrong... Cheers.
divinewrite Posted April 4, 2007 Author Posted April 4, 2007 Hi nato, FYI, I've done some more testing, and found that the problems we're experiencing seem to be common to most / all current LG plasmas, and not evident in other plasmas. See my report at http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?s=&...st&p=633422 . Cheers.
divinewrite Posted April 7, 2007 Author Posted April 7, 2007 Further to my posts above, I have negotiated a partial refund from JB Hi Fi on the LG 50PC3D, and I'm replacing it with a Panasonic TH50-PX600a. The problem is too severe - it makes TV-viewing really hard-going. Even my wife comments on it now. Good luck with yours nato. Cheers.

divinewrite Posted April 7, 2007 Author Posted April 7, 2007 Just two more questionshow far away do you sit from the tv ? what's the diff between your partial refund and the new tv $ ? Hi nato, Ask as many questions as you like! I sit 3.5-4m away from the tv. And the difference was $545. If you want a copy of the letter that got things moving, please email me at wordboy72 at hotmail dot com. BTW, how long have you had your display? Cheers.

I got the 50" 600a at Dick Smith for $3100 + $45 delivery (standard warranty). Exactly what I paid for the LG. You can get it at Wow Coffs Harbour for $2998 if you're prepared to pay for a courier... Gimme a yell if you need anything else. Cheers.
divinewrite Posted April 13, 2007 Author Posted April 13, 2007 If you're following this thread, here's an update. I bought the Panasonic TH-50PX600a, and it's HEAPS better than the LG 50PC3D. See my full discussion at http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?s=&...st&p=641699. Cheers.
