My Arion 9300 arrived yesterday afternoon. It took me a while to wire it into my system; cables everywhere, seems they multiply in the dark.

PQ is excellent via component to my TV. And the tuners drop out less than the one in my TV which I'm really happy about.

Managed to get a 5m active USB cable extension from Electus (Jaycar). RRP about $25, works fine.

I've connected my laptop to the Arion, no probs at all; and transferred some video - it was "Dancing with the Stars". Worked perfectly; using MPEG Streamclip I managed to get a few mpg files that played perfectly. They seem to be standard MPEG2 video files; I assume if I run them through an authoring program I can end up with a DVD.

There's not a whole lot of stuff on free to air that I'd want archived to DVD... but you never know.

I'm getting used to the way the Arion works; it's a long process, especially as my wife wants to watch the TV when I want to play with the PVR.

Ahh well; she'll have a night shift sooner or later.

So far, great unit.

BTW; according to Sam from Metatronics, replacing the HDD invalidates the warranty. But how hard can it be? I can get a 250GB drive; but I'd want to know that it works before trying it.

I'll try the OzTivo EPG sometime soon; it seems like the way to go.

Regards, PW

Its very simple. Just Remember to have the new drive on MASTER mode, Make sure its power requirements aren't much higher than the current drive. There's a replacing a drive post on the Topfield site that should cover much of what you wnat to know (just keep in mind they are different machines)

Vioding waranty is also a debatble issue. If you blow the machine up during installation its on you. If you install and 6 months later something happens to a tuner they are still meant to repair it

The MS actually has its drive set to cable select (CS), although master _should_ work... Also in that guide it details a lot of fuss for transferring the files. The MS/Arion uses a standard fat32 format, so you just need to plug the old drive into a PC (using a caddy or internally) and transfer the files over the USB to the new drive in the unit. If you arent doing that it literally takes 5 minutes (plus thinking time if you are being very careful... which maybe is a good idea )

Choosing a drive should be OK... The samsung SP2514N, HD300LD and HD400LD have all worked in Mediastar units and the power is pretty close to the original SP1203N.

In theory, replacing the HDD doesnt void your warranty but it might place you into warranty hell, where everything that might go wrong gets blamed on the other component... Motherboard fails: "Oh! it *MUST* be that HDD you replaced..." HDD fails: "Oh! is *MUST* be that faulty unit you put it in...". In theory (there's that word again) you are protected from this, but a dodgy retailer can still give you the run around hoping it never gets to you trying to sue them... (Definately not saying that those retailers would do this, but...)

I'm fairly certain my MS was shipped with the drive as master.
