geoff897 Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Hi all I know its a bit of a debate ATM between the 2 formats but i need to upgrade my current DVD player So i think its time to take a gamble. I have a old SONY DVD player (I know i dont know what i was thinking Think i got pressured at the point of sale!!). I have been looking around and reading heaps of reviews but cant make my choise Would it be a good idea to go for a XBOX360 and the HD DVD drive or go for a pure HD DVD player? Also if i go for a HD DVD player would an overseas one work normally with normal dvd and HD DVD'?
AndrewW Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 have a read here but to summarise: The 360 addon is much cheaper, but will not output the advanced audio formats. Also, unless you are going to buy one of the new 360s, you won't get HDMI output. Also, the 360 addon can be connected to your HTPC, if you desire. The standalones are more expensive, slower to startup, but have better support for the advanced audio formats. They are also generally quieter than the 360. I couldn't decide so I got both Andrew.
jokiin Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 They are also generally quieter than the 360. You would hope so, I can hear mine from two rooms away
Felix.. Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Also if i go for a HD DVD player would an overseas one work normally with normal dvd and HD DVD'? An overseas player will play HD DVDs from anywhere in the world just fine as there aren't any region coding hassles to deal with HD DVD thank goodness. I wish Blu-ray was the same. However regular DVDs are region locked on all current standalone HD DVD players so you'll only be able to play DVDs that match the region code of the player.
Felix.. Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 You would hope so, I can hear mine from two rooms away Yeah it's unforgivably noisy in my opinion, especially in comparison to the PS3. I'd consider upgrading to the "Elite" version just if M$ can improve substantially on that aspect alone.

Andrew.
OakenShield1 Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 You would hope so, I can hear mine from two rooms away It's not that bad is it? I will have it in a seperate room to my display if when get one, I'm hoping not to hear it!
rezok Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Or get a Ps3 - a superior gaming system without lending support to microsoft, which is a good thing of course - and then you have BD and a gaming system! (which will one day be a very powerful system - just wait out on those finnish firmware updates that will play divx and network your hard drive - linux?)

(which will one day be a very powerful system - just wait out on those finnish firmware updates that will play divx and network your hard drive - linux?) Bloody hell, how can you say it's superior? I'm not getting into this! Both Platforms have equal plusses and minuses. There are some that like PS3 and those that like 360 for their own reasons. I'm a 360 bloke. You're a PS3 bloke - I'm against giving money to Sony as much as you are to Microsoft. Back on topic, if you want games, get the 360+ add on. If you want it purely for HD-DVD, I'd get a stand alone player. More robust and can do the audio side of it much better.
xr06t Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 rezok, goeff is looking for a hd dvd player. that is all.

AndrewW Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 which will one day be a very powerful system I'm so sick of hearing this. How long exactly are we supposed to wait ? (considering the 360 can do all this right now) Andrew.

There is no region coding on them. As for SD-DVD's I believe you can only watch DVD's from the region you purchased the player in. Not 100% on this, someone here will confirm.
