Well... although I don't watch much TV apart from some sport and Top Gear, I'm thinking of picking up a HD reciever / recorder. What make and model could someone suggest keeping in mind at that for the moment it will drive a CRT (this will change in the next 3 months). Preference would be to have twin tuners for picture in picture. There's the Topfield model (TF7000HT) except it has timer issues.

What else could I look into?

F/W being released tomorrow hopefully to sort this out on the Toppy 7000PVRt - I think that's the one you are referring to, as I can't see why a STB would have timers.

There's also the Strong 5490, LG and Sony 160/250GB models, TEAC, Toshiba....and BeyonWiz coming soon! Check the PVR, DVD Recorder threads for more info thread

I'd probably go the LG. Its the cheapest HD PVR. Does PIP, dual recording, reportedly the best PQ and with FW updates pretty damn reliable. The CRT is irrelevant as its shelf life is 3 months. If you want ICE then the Topfield PVR ($400 more + ICE subscription) is needed.

Yeah, just noticed I probably shoulda posted this there

True, just wanna make sure that it will output 576 in the meantime so I can view (I just wasn't sure if all models would do this as standard).

All HD digital units output/handle both HD and SD channels. You can send HD to a standard TV (via component, RGB, Svideo etc. cables and it will display it fine (it just won't use the picture quality to full ability)

Remember that unless you're talking about a HDMI/DVi cable connection then all digital STBs are actually outputing analogue (cause that's what they do - convert digital to analogue) and all TV understand analogue
