Where Ps3 Has Got It Wrong - $price$

Andrew what do you mean that HDMI is a restrictive format? I dont consider it to restrictive in comparison when my HD-DVD equipped 360 is played a disk with ICT (if that ever actually happens) and I cant enjoy the glory of anything more than 576p.

In that if your display is not HDCP compatible (or if your player and display decide not to play nice), then you get nothing!

btw, I have this sneaking suspicion that microsoft have probably coded the 360 to ignore the ICT anyway, I can't prove this until (and that's a big if) a disc is actually released with the ICT set.

Also there are many displays that wont handle 1080p through component.

I really don't want to start this argument up again, but this does not matter.

As long as your display has a half decent de-interlacer then 1080i = 1080p

Andrew.

And besides, it's not the initial sales that are important. A fair proportion of these are sales to the fanboys who would buy a $1000 George Foreman Grill if it had a Playstation badge on it (errr... oh wait... bad analogy).

The issue will be the same as it has been in Japan and the US: will sales hold up a month or two down the track, once the good and the bad points of the system are better known, and the hype has died down?

I am surprised by the dramatic plunge in PS3 sales particularly in the Japanese market. I think its been declining 20% every month since launch (almost 6 months ago). You would expect to see some decline after the initial headrush, but this decline has been persistant. Lack of software is a big factor but the bluray 'white knight' doesnt seem to be carrying the machine as well as promoters of the format have led us to believe, in Japan anyway. Not sure of the US situation.

The original question is a good one. Can anyone buy a stand alone new BLU RAY player here in Australia cheaper than the PS3 ? No end of story, so how can you say it isn't good value right NOW ?

And remember I'm not talking HD DVD. Never mind which one blows your hair back or floats ya boat ! I'm talking BLU RAY. Thats the reason I bought one now if its got a game console and does other things well that's just dandy . If your looking for a game console ONLY then that's another story .

Well only one way to find out about the ICT thing I guess, true I don't think any discs will be released with ICT flags for a while.

As for the HDMI & HDCP can't say i've encountered any issues with it yet, it is something that is relatively new so guaranteed to be a few quirks.

As for displays not all have good de-interlacers, many companies seemingly cut corners here though, but oh well!

Early HD-DVD adopters should be 'safe-ish', it's up to the manufacturers to implement these changes if they are made, and there will be like a 24 month grace period to do so on the early generation hardware.

No matter which format floats your boat, they are both far too expensive here in Aus.

Me either, but we can count ourselves as the lucky ones.

The 'net is full of stories from people who have a shiny new player that won't talk to their shiny new display.

The real fun added bonus with the PS3 is that they require HDCP even for playing games and accessing the dashboard, so if you don't have an HDCP compatible display you can't use the HDMI connection from the PS3 for anything!

@Nonny

The headset was not bundled in with the premium 360 package in Australia. We received a remote control instead!

My apologies... you are correct. When I bought my launch day Xbox 360 here I already had a UK one as well which did have the headset... hence the confusion. Still talking of value for money I also failed to mention launch day adopters got a free game (I chose PGR3) here in Australia, plus they had the whole exclusive pack add-on with the extra controller, perfect dark 0, faceplate etc...

I bought that and sold all the individual parts, kept the extra controller. All up I think the launch day Xbox 360 was one of the cheapest consoles Ive ever bought on day one.

As for the HD-DVD drive being external. You can argue it both ways... some will hate the fact its not integrated into the machine but for me thats a huge bonus. I can now transport the HD-DVD drive between my two 360s (one in the HT room, one in the lounge) or my PC very easily and there is also the debate as to the stress the PS3 is going to be under running Blu-Ray and Games long-term with that single drive. Its all speculation of course but its fair to say the PS3 optical drive will take a hammering through the course of its life. Then again the 360 has its own share of hardware issues.
