The Xbox's white colour scheme makes it stand out, far too much and it really doesn't match up well with most HT gear, I much preferred the original xbox's design, not so in your face.

The PS3 well is sleep, sexy and polished, looks more like something you want to show off in your HT setup not hide

The PS2 did have a hard drive, its just that sony in their wisdom deprived the Australian market of it.

My Ps2 has a hardrive (120 gig), with all my games uploaded there, hemce I don't use the laser at all.

The PS2 HDD wasn't available until 12 months+ after the initial PS2 release though was it?

The true value of something is what people are prepared to pay for it.

20,000 sold in 3 days? That means that 1 person in a thousand bought one. Seems a bit of a stretch.

I have real big doubts about that figure. I work for a media company with a lot of young guys, all of whom are addicted to gaming be it 360's, Wii's, etc etc. There will be at least 4 of 5 of them get consoles on release. For the PS3 however, 1 person has one, and that one was imported from Japan 6 months ago.

No one is even talking about getting one at the moment.

yes I have real doubts too keep in mind that article actaully said

"Sony has announced that Australian retailers sold over 20,000 PlayStation 3 consoles in the machine's first three days on sale"

given all the propaganda sony has been churnign out, I'm not sure I'd put much behind those figures myself.

and your quite right look around you. how many people do you know who have got a ps3 or talkign abotu getting one ?

Thats correct, the PS2 HD was released in the US bundled with Final Fantasy XI,

I am under the impression that it did not reach our shores, the HD that is.

Anyways , I was just making the point that there is a Hd available for the PS2, as the poster I was replying to implied there was none available.

Regradless, the PS3 is currently overpriced in terms of performance against the Xbox 360, all cross over platform games look better on the Xbox 360, so unless you want a blu ray player aswell I would go with the 360 in terms of games alone.

And will show up dust, dead skin and fingerprints. Besides, you can get skins, decals etc for the 360, changin it to any colour you like. These will appear for the PS3 in time too.

Any one who puts a skin or decal on their PS3 deserves to have it taken off them IMO. :-)

You can tart up the 360, but it still doesn't look anywhere near as good as the PS3. The new black 360 is better, but still not as good. The touch sensitive buttons on the ps3 and the tray free loading are a winner.

As said above, the PS3 suits other HT gear, the 360 is clearly a games console.

White or black, plastic is just that. Touch Sensitive buttons? Give me a break. Lets see how many complain about them not working 100% in about a years' time. As for tray free loading, considering Sony's expertise at transports, this seems like a backwards step.

But enjoy your PS3. Mine is just another component in the rack.

Exactly. And the PS2 didnt have a hard drive, wireless controllers etc etc. This is the price point sony has set. Dont like it? Buy a wii. As Sony improves the manufacturing processes, it will come down in price.

The huge flaw in you logic, is that people won't just go buy a Wii, they will go buy the 360, which has the hard drive, wireless controller, and more...

My only gripe about the 360, I hate that it's white, first thing I will have to buy when I buy a 360 is a black case...

I was told by the retailer that I went through.. that for every preorder, they ordered an extra one....

there must have been a "short fall" with their system,, as I had to provide POI (drivers licence) to verify that in fact I was the one who preordered it (I paid cash)....

but I agree how do you actually know how many were purchased by customers...

Providing proof of who you are when money previously changed hands is very commonplace. This was introduced long before there was a PS3.

Regardless of the critics and the price I personally saw the sales numbers for the PS3's for a major retailer. Needless to say I was absolutely shocked!

Even though its $999 its sold far more than I'd even dare imagine!

The PS3 is a winner as far as i'm concerned.

I agree the PS3 has done quite well for itself, on launch. Surprised quite a few of us given the price tag.

Also to compare apples for apples, Xbox 360 + HD DVD add on gets much closer to PS3 and you get more with the PS3

Plus Wi-Fi too which the official 360 accessory I believe is around $150. Whether you use that or need it is another question. And then there the larger hard drive which is also upgradable. Gee I'm beginning to sound like a Sony fanboi.

40GB more space, Wi-fi and card reader, oh and chrome trim dont justify the extra IMO. Everybody can argue that the 360 is almost as expensive when you factor all the bits n pieces in, but the fact of the matter is with the PS3 there is no choice in the matter. If middle-lower income parents are being forced to buy a PS3 to keep their kids happy, they are paying a premium for features theyll never need/use.

I have a HD-DVD player, I'd be pissed if I HAD to buy the 360 with an in-built HD-DVD drive. But I can understand the logic in those who want it.

Sony fanbois have been touting that online play is free, however based on all the readin Ive done, all current PS3 games that are also available for 360 DONT support online play. Whats the point in offering free online if games dont support it?

ah but you see the retailers will not have you doing that comparison.

as I originally posted they will have the xbox360 game pack at $599 next to the $187 PS2 game pack. but you wont find the $999 ps3 next to these. it will be far away demoing on its own so you cant compare.

do people buy up with the lot.

I bought the 360 game pack for my 360 when had it got me into gaming jsut fine, didnt need to buy anthing else to have a whole bunch of fun.

I imagine similarly there will be many who jsut buy the game packs.

The big argument here seems to be that parents wont be able to afford this for there kids - maybe so but do kids really care/notice the difference in PQ and SQ between a PS2 or a PS3 etc at that younger age

The older ones that do notice or must have the latest technology will either need to save up themselves from thier part time job or go without simple! (kids do still get p/time jobs dont they and not just sponge of their folks)???

Surely we all realise we cant have everything we want and this is a serious piece of HT/Gaming equipment, in my opinion thats worth every cent.

Sony arent trying to market to everyone - they are targetting a specific market in serious game players and HD enthuisiasts. If they get anyone else onboard in these early stages - Bonus

Eventaully price will fall and more will buy in, but i dont think sony have done themselves an injustice but marketing there product differently.

I also remember the PS2 coming out around the $800 mark which was alot more money than $1k is now (or maybe i just earn more now haha).

To kids its not about the BR drive or the HD graphics, its the fact that their class mate has one at home and the status that brings. Its about brand identity, which Sony do have down to a fine art. Its not about a spoiled kid getting his own way, its about a kid probably not getting the s**t kicked out of him in the schoolyard for NOT having the latest toy at home.

Interesting that many of the people in here complaining about the price when they themselves have in the order of $10,000+ home entertainment systems! The average Joe would think that was ridiculous!

hehe, try $200K+ ht and I think the price is ridiculous! I don't see what it offers on top of the X360+HD-DVD addon really... they should have made it more competitive

Hmm... I remember when I got the 360 I thought it was cool. White, now that was different. Then I went and chromed it out. Just for laughs really, then I bought a black case... ok, but now what? I don't look twice at it anymore. I'm only really concerned with what I see/hear, my gaming experience and how I interact with it. If I ever get the PS3... yeh, well, I might go wow, that looks slick, wonder how long that feeling will last?

I also suspect that if I were to buy a PS3, it may be my initial BD player, but not for long.
