Where Ps3 Has Got It Wrong - $price$

Sony sells 20000 PS3's in 3 days

Seems there are some enthusiasts out there. A good start for the PS3 but didnt the 360 sell something like 30000 in four days? and the wii 33000? Still, i think sony will be encouraged by this, but I cant see a price drop any time soon and nor can i see the argument for a 20gb console if the PS3 60gb sells at it has. Sales will drop off to a steady rate, i mean the 360 took another 7 months after the fiorst 3 days to reach 100000 units sold (and still no price drop-even with this competition)

cheers

There's a lot of people that knock Sony, but I'm actually applauding them now. I think they put out a damn impressive piece of equipment and stuck to their guns. Blu Ray and HDMI output.

I'm somewhere in between. I neither think it's a fantastic buy nor a rip-off. I'm fairly happy with what I got for the $999 but if it was much more than that I probably would've passed. Of course it could always be cheaper, and for those who were prepared to import it was, and substantially so.

Units sold TO a retailer, or units actually OUT the door from that retailer? As has been shown in the US, shipped units versus sold units is quite a bit different.

Matt

Units that have gone out the door in the hands of customers.

Regardless of the critics and the price I personally saw the sales numbers for the PS3's for a major retailer. Needless to say I was absolutely shocked!

Even though its $999 its sold far more than I'd even dare imagine!

The PS3 is a winner as far as i'm concerned.

Is that because of the money it generated for your boss Mr. Harvey, or do you think outside of the circle?

$1000 is a bargain really.

Your getting the best Blu-ray player

60GB hard drive

sacd player

Games machine

Bluetooth compatible

dvd player

cd player

internet access

wifi built in

photo card slots

It is excellent value, but looking at it just for games, it is expensive. I bet sony bring out the 20GB VERY SOON.

They saidit would come "if demand requires it. So basically if it doesnt sell well, they will bring he 20gb out

I disagree 100% with this, and I bought one! Even at the $618 I paid for an import 20GB, I feel a little bit like Ive been taken for a ride.

the HDD is for game save data, and to aid loading times it chucks a bunch of game data onto the HDD

the neat thing is the HDD can be replaced by the user if they're minded to do so (instructions are included) with a normal laptop HDD (bare in mind laptop HDD prices are more expensive than normal full-sized SATA/IDE drives).

one thing to remember is, when the PS2 first came out it was priced at $750-$800AUD, and it was "only" a DVD player (and not the greatest one at that). $999 for new technology, a great console, home media hub isnt THAT bad, IF you use it for all its functions... but, buy it for only one function and yeah, its pricey... use it for ALL its functions, and it could be worth it, for the right person i suppose, there's definately a market for it afterall...

i dont think its too bad, looking back when i got a PS2 in its early early days....

The true value of something is primarily the cost of building it........not the cost of the advertising hype + the retailer profit margins + GST+ import tax + the cost of warranty+ the cost of shipping + export tax + income taxes Sony might pay +.......

Then of course one has to consider repair costs to the consumer once the warranty has expired, it may well have to be shipped back to Japan.

Value for money ? No, otherwise it would hold or its maintain its cost price.

But then if we really wanted value for money we would buy at the end of the product cycle. A $50 DVD player is value for money if it works faultlessly for a long time.

But what the heck! I buy the things I perceive to be of value to me and not what it's real value is, hype or otherwise.

I haven't seen my two nephews for months. Bought a PS3 and suffice to say they landed on my doorstep the next day wanting to play. And it plays good!

(p.s. the glossy black case is a serious dust magnet!)

Well, that's value for money........you've suddenly become popular, Beejay.

Thanks. I think the market will determine its value. I paid over $1000 for my Toppy at its release, and I don't regret it for a moment. My friend bought his (120 vs my 80GB model) for $679 a couple of weeks ago. I don't begrudge that at all.

But does that now mean your Toppy is now valued less than $679 because it has now been bettered ?

Well it's three years old, second hand and has a 80Gb HDD, I'd say that has a lot to say about it. Didn't someone sell one like that for over $500 recently? Note the most recent of this model came with 160GB, IIRC. (OK, getting off-topic here)

If people want to pay $679 for a PS3 then maybe they should wait three years?

I am sure I read somewhere that Sony was not going to lower the price of the PS3 for at least 2 years after launch.

Internally they are saying 3 to 4 months as they expect sales to stagnate at that point, how much of a drop though wasn't hinted at, time will tell I guess

I'd guess $100, or more "value added items" attached to the SKU for the same retail, along with the 20GB being available.

not sure if they will go with the 20gb version but bundling the value adds is a likely tactic to up the percieved value

Maybe it is my PC gaming background showing, but I really don't see the price as the outrageous rip off that some claim. People dropped that kind of cash on DVD players when they first arrived, and they didn't do half the tricks the PS3 can.

Whether pitching a premium product is a smart move by Sony is a different argument.

Credit to them for one thing though, the PS3 does at least look and feel like an expensive product. The 360 feels a bit cheap and nasty in comparison - the colour, the bad chrome, the loose open/close button, the disc tray etc - the PS3 is much more "ipod"

I think the PS3 is great value. The original PS2 was $799 and it still sold. An extra $200 for the extra features is nothing. It like the PS2 will no doubt come down in price. However, Sony (like most smart companies) know that there is always going to buy suckers who are willing to pay the $$$$ initially. Come Christmas time i rekon we'll see some good deals.

Exactly. And the PS2 didnt have a hard drive, wireless controllers etc etc. This is the price point sony has set. Dont like it? Buy a wii. As Sony improves the manufacturing processes, it will come down in price.

The PS2 did have a hard drive, its just that sony in their wisdom deprived the Australian market of it.

My Ps2 has a hardrive (120 gig), with all my games uploaded there, hemce I don't use the laser at all.
