betty boop Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 Was standign in DSE this evening returning some stuff. and the gaming section caught my eye. XBOX360 pack with 20G HDD and wireless controller (all you'd need to get going with the 360) $599 next to it the PS2 gaming pack (all you need to get goign with a PS2) $187 ! can you imagine if they then put the PS3 next to this little collection PS3 $999 ! its no wonder it isnt positioned anywhere near these. but parked miles away in its own section with all the paraphenelia around it to generate some sales. as a manufacturer how the hell do you go from a $187 PS2 console to a $999 one ! as a replacment thats like holden bringing out the next comodore with a $200,000 sticker price. I mean seriously are they really suprised the PS3 launch was lack lustre as it was and gnerated hardly any interest ? they have got to do somethign about the price of the ps3 !

Gotta admit it's a bit mean of Sony not to sell the 20GB model in oz:(

" they have got to do somethign about the price of the ps3 ! "..........better still Sony should reconfigure it as a cheap Blu-ray player and 'gut' the game machine aspect of it. It has basically failed as a games machine from a marketing point of view no matter how much money they throw at advertising. Sony should start on the PS4 and get everything working first before marketing it as " Something you cannot live without '. C.M
Hydrology Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 Yeah!Gotta admit it's a bit mean of Sony not to sell the 20GB model in oz:( When it was originally announced it was due to be AU$849 - still too high IMO.
Skid_MacMarx Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 I must say alebonau that I personally feel I got "bang for buck" with my purchase of the PS3... I'm very impressed with all its features.. BD, DVD and HD game playback.. my only criticism so far is the PS2 backward compatibility issue .. but that does not take away the quality of the unit. I have not set up the unit properly to do a proper A/B comparison of SA-CD SQ.. although there were no issues with playback.. overall I highly recommend it, especially when it drops in price. Just a question for you alebonau, the instruction\s state that the CD audio sound is output at 48KHz rather than 44KHz,, is there any real benefit by doing this?

-Bishop- Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 Price 'needs' to be more like $800, but even then I'd say too expensive for my blood, need to be like a DVD only 20gb drive version for around $600...
Greebs Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 Wasn't the PS2 around $800 when it was initially released? I agree though, $999 is a bit much.
Skid_MacMarx Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 considering they are going to make most of their money from games etc.. the price of the unit must drop,, I agree with the general tenet that price is the issue here. Fortunately, I had 3 months to save for it...but for most people, its a luxury item with that steep price tag.
AndrewW Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 Wasn't the PS2 around $800 when it was initially released? I agree though, $999 is a bit much. but that was then (it was overpriced as well) and this is now. When the 360 can be had for sub $600, I just don't see the sense in selling at $999. I only bought mine because I could get it for just over $630 imported. And I mainly bought it as a massively subsidised BD player. Honestly, the 360 is a much better gaming platform. Queue Sony fans claiming that MS has a 12 month head start, and just you wait ... I'll get in early and remind them that the PS3 has been out for 6 months, and there's not a single 'halo' available ... Andrew.
ozdoc Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 Ok, let me get this right: 60GB: PS3 $999 ! 20GB: When it was originally announced it was due to be AU$849 - still too high IMO. So for what amounts to a piddly 40 GB extra, you're expected to pay $3.75 per GB? (taking into consideration that the average retail 400 GB drive is around 47c per GB) Is this the only difference in the machines?? If so, that's up there with being monstered..
AndrewW Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 Is this the only difference in the machines?? If so, that's up there with being monstered.. nope, also get's Wifi built in and memory card readers. Andrew.
Hussla Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 Regardless of the critics and the price I personally saw the sales numbers for the PS3's for a major retailer. Needless to say I was absolutely shocked! Even though its $999 its sold far more than I'd even dare imagine! The PS3 is a winner as far as i'm concerned.
pgdownload Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 Agree but $999 isn't really the price of the PS3. Its the price of the PS3 + Bluray. Tack off that (Or add HDDVD to the XBox) and the prices get more interchangeable. Obviously Sony are hoping to leverage their PS2 customers by forcing them to buy a BluRay unit before they probably really want to. Great if it works and turns out to be the killer HD-DVD blow they want it to be. But as you say I suspect with the quality and 'cheapness' of the Wii and XBox they may have just shot themselves in the foot. Regards Peter Gillespie

T800 Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 $1000 is a bargain really. Your getting the best Blu-ray player 60GB hard drive sacd player Games machine Bluetooth compatible dvd player cd player internet access wifi built in photo card slots It is excellent value, but looking at it just for games, it is expensive. I bet sony bring out the 20GB VERY SOON. They saidit would come "if demand requires it. So basically if it doesnt sell well, they will bring he 20gb out
warnsey1 Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 I think the PS3 is great value. The original PS2 was $799 and it still sold. An extra $200 for the extra features is nothing. It like the PS2 will no doubt come down in price. However, Sony (like most smart companies) know that there is always going to buy suckers who are willing to pay the $$$$ initially. Come Christmas time i rekon we'll see some good deals.
-Bishop- Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 You know the Sony fans keep contradicting each other, first you all say it's worth $$$, then you point out stuff like how Sony don't have a price drop planned till like later next year, then it's prices will be down soon and it will be killer value, and it just goes on and on...
croops Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 I can understand why many would consider $999 a touch expensive... I only JUST convinced myself (and the missus) to get one... However it IS an enthusiasts item right now... and will be for the next 12-24 months at least. Interesting that many of the people in here complaining about the price when they themselves have in the order of $10,000+ home entertainment systems! The average Joe would think that was ridiculous! It's also worth noting that gamers are always ready to spend mega bucks on their hobby. The average PC gamers' rig would easily be over the $3,500 mark AND probably gets updated every 18-24 months with new gfx card, RAM etc... The PS3, with a possible lifespan of 5-10 years seems like - to me - good value.

A good comparison actually, top end graphics card suitable for gaming are selling at $900

Units sold TO a retailer, or units actually OUT the door from that retailer? As has been shown in the US, shipped units versus sold units is quite a bit different. Matt

I defintely think its an enthusiast item cannot see this one being bought for the kids. unless theyre rich kids. or they have rich parents. to put in perspective actually do not know one kid that get one of these or likely getting one ! ps3 life span 5-10 years ? I somehow think 3-5 is porbably more likely.
Raja Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 Sony sells 20000 PS3's in 3 days Seems there are some enthusiasts out there. A good start for the PS3 but didnt the 360 sell something like 30000 in four days? and the wii 33000? Still, i think sony will be encouraged by this, but I cant see a price drop any time soon and nor can i see the argument for a 20gb console if the PS3 60gb sells at it has. Sales will drop off to a steady rate, i mean the 360 took another 7 months after the fiorst 3 days to reach 100000 units sold (and still no price drop-even with this competition) http://blogs.theage.com.au/screenplay/archives//005654.html cheers
-Bishop- Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 20000 in three days?, I find that just a little hard to believe, I'll put more stock into official independent sales figures coming out soon...

I think its brilliant value for money considering I've spent a lot more in the past and gotten a hell of lot less. If only it was region free then this thing would rock !
