SuperFly Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 Hi Guys, I remember reading somewhere in a thread not so long ago that the Imported PS3's didn't play "backed up" copies of DVD's - ie: with the region code and css removed via DVD Shrink. Has anybody tried this with the Oz delivered ones? Sorry if this info is buried in another thread somewhere - i searched and couldn't find it.
SuperFly Posted March 27, 2007 Author Posted March 27, 2007 So nobody has tested this at all? Surely somebody must of......? Anybody?
mil098 Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 I can tell you that a HK unit plays backups fine (PAL/NTSC) mil.
SuperFly Posted March 27, 2007 Author Posted March 27, 2007 I can tell you that a HK unit plays backups fine (PAL/NTSC)mil. Really? Wow thats interesting - i could of sworn that i read on here that others have tried and it didn't work... Were the disks you tried region free? EDIT: Found the origional quote - about half way down the page the guys are saying that the import ones dont play anything except NTSC originals.... http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtop...6968&st=660
SuperFly Posted March 27, 2007 Author Posted March 27, 2007 I must admit Ive been lazy too If you get a spare few minutes i would REALLY love to know the results! Also i am curious if you can actually rip DVD's to the hard disk and play them from there?
mrfish Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 I can verify that backups would play fine in my local PS3

delarge Posted March 27, 2007 Posted March 27, 2007 I did a quick search and found a backup of a manga DVD on my shelf.....the Japanese PS3 recognised it, but it wouldn't play because it was in PAL format. Grrr....I wonder if they'll ever make the Japanese and U.S. machines PAL compatible. I'm guessing not, but you never know.

When it was originally released the HK unit would only play NTSC, with firmware 1.6 it added PAL DVD playability. Taken from the support doc of firmware 1.6 "DVDs that are recorded in the PAL video broadcast standard can now be played." I just got one of each DVD (NTSC/PAL) and made backups of them to test. Mil.
delarge Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 a question...what if you downloaded the HK 1.6 firmware and installed it on your Japanese machine?
Julian L Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 I'm surprised anyone is using the PS3 for SD DVDs. It's as terrible an SD DVD player as it is a good BD player. It doesn't upscale SD for a start and the image frankly looks terrible in comparison to playing the same disc on my Pioneer 969 DVD player. I use it purely for BD and wouldn't even think of using it for SD.

It is very horrible watching a DVD on that as I have a Philips upscaler DVD player and that does a much better job. And, yes, region free backup DVDs.

And, yes, region free backup DVDs. Horrible in watching standard DVD in comparison to Blu Ray or upscaled maybe, but what constitutes horrible in watching run of the mill DVD? I've got mine hooked up to a projector via hdmi projecting onto a 120" screen and can't see the difference than watching a standard definition DVD on my stand-alone DVD player vs. the PS3. I don't think I've ever had a "horrible" experience watching a DVD unless it's been some dodgy bootleg from Asia.

I completely agree - i am sure the PQ is horrible compared to a BR movie but my main concern/interest (in this thread) was if it played the backed up disks at all and if the quality was comparable to my existing Sony DVD player that is probably 6+ years old which does no scaling at all to the best of my knowledge. I have a big collection of DVD's that i have made - just collections of older TV eps and other stuff like that that i have put onto DVD (that are all region free) and it was crucial to me that the PS3 played all of these so i could get rid of the DVD player and consolidate all of my players onto just the PS3.
