I've recently bought a Panasonic 50PX600A and need a bit of help with DVD player resolution. I've got 2 DVD players one is a Pioneer DVD-466 and the other is a cheap Telefunken 223 - USB & DIVx player.

I always thought the Pioneer was the better machine but when I connect it to the Pana in progressive mode the screen shows 480P whereas the Telefunken shows up as 576P. So am I getting more resolution from the Telefunken? and would I be better leaving the Pioneer in Interlace mode mode so that it does Pal 576i. Also I notice the screen has a slight judder on panning scenes when using 480Pon the Pioneer, the manual says that Progressive is only for ntsc & is at 60hz - is this causing it? the Telefunken is ok at 576P

The Pana has a pretty good upscaler so for the best picture what do you guys suggest? also if I were to buy a new DVD player would I notice a discernable improvement? if so what model - need divx and be a reputable brand $200 area

The early Pioneer players only did NTSC Progressive - 480P, just like early Panasonics and Sonys.

The newer Pioneer player have DualProgressive, ie: 480P and 576P, choose in Initail Setup from memory.

Above the 490V in the current range they have Farouja upscaling which takes this the next step up in quality.

You may find the Panasonic screen does a better scaling job than the Pioneer, try leaving it on 576i or Auto. I don't expect the Telefunken to give anywhere near the quality despite being Dual progressive, but I might be wrong. Usually no upscaling is better than cheap upscaling.

Your model Pioneer does not support PAL progressive scan. You are therefore indeed losing resolution when you are playing PAL discs in progressive scan mode, so I would recommend you run the Pioneer in interlaced output mode. The Panasonic has quite good de-interlacing capabilities, probably at least as good as any sub-$200 DVD player, so I don't think you'd be worse off in letting the Pana do the de-intelacing and scaling.

I would suspect the de-interlacer in the Telefunken would be inferior to the Pana, so I'd stick with the Pioneer in interlaced mode.

I believe this statement is incorrect.

AFAIK, none of the consumer level Pioneer players have the Faroudja chipset. Newer model upscaling Pioneer DVD players such as the DV-696AV do incorporate the MT1392 scaler chip.
