slamdunka Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 Been reading up on a HD boxes and have a couple of quick questions. I just got a Sony 50" LCD RP 1280 x 720. Does the HD box convert whatever the TV signal is to 1280 x 720? Or does the TV do it? Do all HD boxes ouput 1280 x 720? If someone could recommend one that does that would be great. Thanks.

Does the HD box convert whatever the TV signal is to 1280 x 720? - depending on the STB, most if not all HD STB's can output 576i/576p/720p/1080i via remote selection, and some also have an Auto resolution setting so that whatever comes in goes out with no scaling performed Or does the TV do it? - if you send a signal to the TV that does not match it's native resolution it will either upscale or downscale the incoming signal to the panel resolution Do all HD boxes ouput 1280 x 720? - see above If someone could recommend one that does that would be great. - Strong, Topfield, LG, Phillips just to name a few Thanks.

Thanks. 1280x720 is a 16:9 ratio - this is the standard digital TV widescreen broadcast ratio. It looks like your TV doesn't have a built in digital tuner (just an old analogue one). So to get digital TV you need to buy a HD STB. This will probably be best with a HDMI cable or COMPONENT cables. To answer your question the networks broadcast at the resolution they decide. Then the STB can either just let it go through to the TV as is or you can tell the STB to convert the signal to another format. Your TV will happily recieve: 1080p 1080i (HDTV) 720p (HDTV) 480p (EDTV) 576p 576i So I'd suggest you hit the stores and talk to the sales staff. A good HD STB should cost about $300-$400 and a good HDMI cable around $100. Brands well Strong and Topfield both have good HD STBs. If you like recording TV then you might consider getting a HD PVR (A VCR doesn't really cut it on a 50 HD TV). Maybe check out the LG HD PVR for around $800 (Note its a recorder and STB in one) Regards Peter Gillespie PVR General FAQ: http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=36191 LG PVR FAQ: http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=32125
