hey, how did you start a new thread with less than 10 posts to your name ?

has something changed ?

There's been a few of these lately Andrew. There was one just the other day, which I reported in order to find out if it was due to the fallout from the hacking. Tim advised that he allowed the poster to start a thread because he felt it might contribute to healthy discussion. Fair enough.

Not sure what he was smoking when he thought this particular thread topic had anything special to offer?!?!?

I think we feel the same way. 10 posts, get in line...

Forget all the other advice and just buy the one that suits your decor or has the highest WAF - a HTIB at $1000 is a HTIB at $1000 - there's not gonna be any major quality differences from an AV point of view :D

If you have nay brand loyalties then simply follow your heart

My only advice: buy something with seperate AVR and DVD player. You'll be much better off than an all in one unit IMO.

Something like these, then trow in a cheap DVD player. Places like JB HiFi often have these packages and include a DVD player.

Agree with Gutty - my folks went one of these HT packages from yammie and couldnt be happier. Especially compared to the all in one crap.

Anyone have any ideas on HT mainly to watch dvd's

Large satelites, almost bookshelfspeakers - Sony HTDDW880 $899.

Good amp (6.1ch plus B Speakers), 6.1 speakers of relatively good quality, HDMI passthrough, best sound under $1k from leading brands

Tallboy speakers - Pioneer HTIB ???? $999

Pioneer VSX 816S with Pioneer 5.1ch tallboys (same as ) and decent sub. No HDMI switching, but good quality 130wx6 amp, component switching. Speakers aren't of Sony sound quality, amps are similiar in tone and power to me.

As a previous poster said, a $1000 HT is a $1000 HT. These I think are the two best, although the Yamaha YHT175 aint bad, but the speakers lack the high end reponse of particurly the Sony.

BTW, The Pioneer system 'may'be exclusive to Myer, but other retailers may have a similiar Pioneer setup.

Which do you think would be the better system the Sony HTDDW880 or the Sony HTSF1000 both at $600?

HTDDW880 easily. It's a truly upgradable package, capable of driving up to mid range speakers ($1500 front speakers).

The HTSF1000 is a fashion HT, with good sound but not capable at driving anything else except the standard speakers. The sub is a passive sub, whereas the 880 uses a HT styled active subwoofer, again upgradable.

Take a look at the rear of the 880 amp, heaps of inputs, and the ability to run B speakers. (run lounge and outdoor speakers simultaneously)

But the 880 is a large package. If space is at a premium, the 1000 is a slim amp, just without the power reserves of the 880.

LOL

so would that make the HTDDW880 the best buy for a home theatre system at the <$750 mark? its actually $549 at the sony shop in melbourne.

also if i bought some decent front speakers .. would they be syncd with the rest of the speakers? i heard you should keep the speakers all the same range/brand? otherwise things like speech sound different from different speakers or is that not really noticable?

Another one slips thru to the keeper

A cheap HTIB will not cope very well housed in a huge garage. You have bought yourself a nice little PJ there and at a good price, you should really do yourself a favour and get at least a decent audio system to match it.

Why JB hifi? check out this link from eastwood hifi http://www.eastwoodhifi.com.au/

set of yamaha speakers 5.1 normal $1749 sale price $699 add in a cheap avr say yamaha rxv459 rrp$699 , which I would imagine they would discount to sell as package and you have a much better system than a htib.No doubt you could get the dvd player as well within your $1500 budget.

That's a great buy and great advice.

Shame this sort of thing can't be stickied somewhere for everytime the HTIB question gets asked! :D

I wouldn't rave about the quality of low end sony gear. Sonically I, and a lot of others apparently, would consider them to be at the bottom of the barrel.

Heck I wouldn't buy high-end sony gear unless it was an LCD panel, but thats just me.

BTW I have a bttom-end Sony AVR that I am looking to replace once the HDMI smoke screen disappears and we finally get to see what everyone is actually selling.

If you are looking to fill a large room with large sound for next to nicks then I suggest some cheap ebay speakers (like dream acoustics) and a $500 amp from your local electrical discounter. If you can get a yamaha, onkyo or pioneer cheap it will be a great setup.

If you want to save even more money, a sony or sherwood from JB for around $300 will do the job, but just dont expect miracles in sound quality, but it will be fine for DVDs.

thanks for the inputs.. !

So bigger is better for surround sound?

I have to buy from jb as a friend gets a staff discount… im off to the store now to look around and see what offers are on.. I'll be snooping around for an avr and speaker setup.. That yamaha speaker pack is cheap though.. Will they be reasonable sound quality? And will the floorstanders be ok for music too?

Will let you know how I get on.. And if your selling a second hand avr setup in melbourne, I'll be interested.

Cheers

I wouldn't say bigger is better.

You can get quality in small packages. (Sib/Cub speakers for instance).

BUT, one usually gets what one pays for.

The more you can spend the better the system (generally).

Volume isn't everything.

Something that didn't come to me at first is that a good quality powerful amp driven through good speakers gives the same thing one gets by turning up the volume by not turning up the volume. Does that make sense. One gets quality and clarity at lower volumes by gettting good gear.
