With PAL PS2 title playback through the PS3, We have found (so far with the games we have tested) an actual improvement in the Picture and sound quality... so the emulation software may have its advantages after all

Of course, including the extra hardware drives up costs. The magazine adds that Sony plans on removing the PS2 chipset from future revisions of the PS3 hardware once it has finished development of a proper software-based PS2 emulator. Such a removal would help bring down costs for the system.

Sony has repeatedly stated that PS2 software would run on the PS3 through software emulation, leaving many to believe that the company had developed a powerful emulator for the older hardware. This would have been a particularly impressive feat, considering that even the PlayStation 2 originally used a combination of hardware and software to maintain backwards compatibility with original generation PlayStation games.

If the Ultra One report is true, the use of hardware emulation casts some doubts on what kind of visual updates we can expect for PlayStation 2 games. PlayStation 1 games saw a few marginal upgrades when running on the PlayStation 2 due to the PlayStation graphics chip being emulated entirely through software running on the PS2's Graphics Synthesizer.

Hey Skid, perhaps you should list those titles you have found to work and whether they are improved or worse. Could help out some folks here.

I will place a comprehensive list later (if the boys let me  .. they are preoccupied with motorstorm atm) ...

so far they have played:

Futurama

Crash Tag Team Racing

Robots

We have noticed a mark PQ and SQ improvement with the above, and no playback issues..

Pitfall was reported to have "minor" issues, so far we have noticed patterns of light in quicksand and water (like lightning).... although like the previous PS2 titles above, the PQ is much clearer. Edited by Skid_MacMarx

Tekken 4 and Mortal Kombat Armageddon work 100% - and in 480p to boot as well, and they look fantastic

I found this. . . interesting:

European PlayStation fans were bickering when Sony announced that the legacy hardware (PlayStation 2 Emotion Engine) was being removed for the European launch of the PlayStation 3 console. They were afraid their favorite titles wouldn't be compatible with the system.

Luckily for them, Phil Harrison recently confirmed that the PAL/Euro version of the PlayStation 3 currently supports over 1,200 compatible PS2 titles, with more to be added to the current list before March 23rd. This will be via a firmware upgrade to 1.60, as the consoles were shipped over 4 weeks ago (and obviously aren't updated with the latest firmware).

The software emulation also allows for select titles to be upscaled to 720p/1080i, and will receive constant updates in order to support more PS2 games. It's looking like the new method of backwards compatibility is looking to be more of a bonus than a handicap.

In respones to 1.7, SCEE has updated the "backwards compatibility" list

http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc/bcGames.htm

it appears this "emulation" is a work in progress

As far R&C 2 was concerned the boys couldn't get pass the 3rd level as it would freeze

Also I don't understand why the widescreen games no longer fill the whole screen

If they do "phase out" PS2 eventually.. they will have to certainly do a lot better than this effort so far..

true.. who will be playing these games when a larger selection of "next gen" games are on the market.. but Sony did promise backwards compatibility......

Also would it be possible for the moderator to move this thread to gaming section?

probably got missed when the forums were split.

Is it really the end of the world ?

My sister is a bit of a gamer. She loved her PS2 so much she burned through 5 consoles. At the same time she had nothing but contempt for the xbox. Last week she begrudgingly sold her PS2 and all her games. She them bought a 360 and xbox versions of all her favourite PS2 titles.

So what prompted this "change of heart"?

1. The price of the PS3

2. The fact not a single one of her favourite PS2 titles would work on a PS3 (and these were the most popular titles on the PS2 - not just a personal taste thing)

3. GTA IV 360 dummy covers in EB stores with nothing for the PS3

Now many here are fairly hardcore one way or the other. This was an average consumer who spends a heap on games and was entirely loyal to Sony.

They need to wake up before they have no more loyal customers.
