Sony hands out free 46" HDTVs to the first 100 customers in London

Eager London gamers that waited in line to get their hands on a PlayStation 3 this morning got way more than they may have bargained for before camping out. Sony, obviously in a generous mood, gave the first 100 customers to purchase a £425 ($834 USD) PS3 a free 46" HDTV and a free taxi ride home.

In all, Sony gave away over £250,000 ($490,450 USD) in HDTVs to accompany the PS3 launch. The free taxi ride was most likely a nod to the fact that many customers who showed up to purchase a PS3 might not have exactly had enough room to transport a 46" HDTV back to their homes.

"I feel fantastic. I'm delighted that everyone here also gets a television," said 17-year-old Ritatsu Thomas who was the first buyer in line.

The PS3 has gotten off to a somewhat slow start in the United States and has been consistently outsold by both the Wii and Xbox 360 since its November launch. Sony is confident, however, that the European and Australian launches of its PS3 will help vault it into first place in the next generation console wars. A strong showing in these two regions could help boost the overall global sales numbers of the PS3.

Sony has also had a few months to add features to the PS3's firmware and bulk up its game library to entice European gamers. "There are benefits for European consumers - there are more games available, more Blu-ray movies and we've updated the online PlayStation network," said Sony's Phil Harrison.

Sony had originally planned to launch the PS3 simultaneously worldwide on November 17, 2006. The company announced, however, in early September 2006 that the European launch would be delayed until March 2007. Sony at the time cited problems with manufacturing blue laser diodes as one of the reasons for the delay.

Despite the delay, Sony is ready to conquer Europe and has made 200,000 consoles available for the UK launch.

... gave the first 100 customers to purchase a £425 ($834 USD) PS3 a free 46" HDTV

The first 100 customers got a free TV at the expense of other European and Australian customers, who pay US$800 for the PS3 compared to $600 in US and $520 in S'pore.

Don't buy a PS3 until SONY stops using Aust customers to subsidise its other markets.

Sony are desperate, their launch has been a flop in every country, and the countries they claim to have had a good launch in had very limited numbers of consoles to sell, so why wouldn't it sell well when you have jack sh*t nothing to sell. Sony have killed themselves, I don't see them recovering to beat out MS and Nintendo, I think they've screwed themselves and this free HDTV nonsense and free games is all part of a desperate plee to win users. Not going work. Long live the kings, MS and Nintendo.

Dear oh dear.

Just wait till the games start flying and the 360 struggles to keep up. It is an inferior machine with a 12 month head start on software production.

Take it easy. Ps3 will have its day.

lol, all I ever hear from the PS3 spruikers is "just you wait until ..."

We've been waiting ages.

The PS3 has been out for nearly six months, I'm still not blown away by the range of available games.

Are we still going to be hearing the same argument when the PS4 is announced in a couple of years ?

I'm not a fans of MS XBOX or Sony, but I totally agree that Sony do that in the expense of other consumer. They managed to reduce their production cost for European and Australian version by removing the Emotion Engine chip, yet still charge A LOT MORE for that version. Talks about common sense...

BTW, I don't have XBOX or XBOX360 and I HAVE PS2, but I won't buy PS3, especially here is Australia. If I'm eager to get it, I would buy it when I'm in Singapore 1 month ago. They sell US version there for SG$700, and after tax refund, it is effectively SG$650, which translate to around AU$600.

This is the real reasons that SONY decide to sue and finally able to forced Lik Sang (famous hongkong online games shop) to closed down, so they can keep screwing their consumer outside USA and Japan by enforcing unbelievable price to cover their lost in other country...

Just my two cent...

PS: Myer Sydney City midnight PS3 launch only attended by around 40 people. Not sure how many of them buy the PS3 though, some of them likely just be there with their other friend getting the PS3, means that the number of console sold that night during launch will be even lower than 40 unit

Hey, if sony want to throw a free HD tv in for me I'll buy a PS3!

At this point I'm more interested in getting a XB360, so they better give me somthing extra if they want me to buy their machine instead.

I'm very happy with my ps3 goes nicely with my 60" sxrd. Can't say the same about my wii though, it's beginning to turn more into a gimmick unless some new games that make proper use of the controls without being poorly implemented come out. And apart from that on a big screen it's so.... chunky.

Don't see PS3 beating Wii???

Anyone still buying Wii consoles. Where I work, until mid January you couldn't get enough Wiis, now you sell a trickle. PS2 is selling more. The console may turn out to be an absolute flop due to the poor range of games.

Also, in this enviroment where 80% or so of tvs sold are HD, even component on Wii looks pretty bad on the industry standard 40-42" display.

At $800Aud the PS3 will be good value:

- you don't need the plug'n'charge kit

- HiDef DVD drive included (BD- HD-DVD costs $249 for competitor)

- free online ($79.95 for XBox)

- bigger Hard drive

- web browser

Get over it, it's the BEST console available currently, it's just $200-$350 overpriced.

Best games? Well, I'll miss Halo 3 and Forza 2, but Sony has some excellent titles.

Are you serious? I've got all 3 consoles. The 360 is still miles better than both the PS3 and Wii.

I'll pay $80 a year anyday for the excellent Xbox Live service. People pay $180 a year to play WOW!

Sony doesn't have any excellent titles at the moment, a few good ones but nothing that is a must have game. Certainly nothing to beat Gears of War or Crackdown etc...

I've already finished Gears of War once and am half way through again on a harder setting and I still prefer playing Gears to Resistance.

HD-DVD looks better to me than Blu-ray.

Big statement mate.

I'm not saying which side of the fence I'm on. But you can't say it's the best console as thats a matter of user opinion.

As said online content on X-Box is way better. HD-DVD brings the cost of the whole X-Box 360 console up to around the cost of the PS3. Bigger hard drive, fair enough,

Web browser, don't know much about that.

Debatable about best games too. Once again, up to personal preference.

I'm not getting into the HD vs BR debate. But they basically look the same. as do these two consoles IMHO all things considered.
