50mxe20 Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 Lat few years I seem to have a watch that lasts about a year (or two at most) and then it plays up. I had a cheap Timex ($30) that I bought in Canada and it lasted about 10 years. Since then I go through a new watch every 18 months on average. All watches to date have been less than $100. Should I lash out and spend more? How much more? I prefer digital but as soon as one gets over a couple of hundred dollars they gets so chunky. So what do you guys have and what do you prefer? How much money does on need to spend to get a good one (without going over the top). Don't want to have to sell the HT to buy a watch!!
-Bishop- Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 I think I spent about $350 on a Citizen Wingman about 16 years ago, back when watches still looked nice, it's still going, but I'd be lying if I said there had been zero problems with it. It needed new guts put into it going back maybe 5 years, it's also had a wrist clip replacement and two glass replacements, some of those things were covered by warranty, can't remember what though, do remember one being a fairly big repair bill, but by that stage it was sentimental value, so it was worth it to me to get it fixed. Good luck finding something that look nice, I keep my own eye out but watches have been ugly for years now...
Mining Man Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 If your preference is digital, then I'd stick to a cheapy. Digital watches are more sport than fashion, which is why the majority are quite chunky. Also, battery replacement for a digital watch can cost over $70 once you include the pressure test... One of my desires in life is a Raymond Weil W series from about 10 years ago. Watches could easily be an obsession for me, the equal of HT!!
Aloysius Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 About $100 gets a digital watch that you never have to take off, that the strap goes hard before the battery dies, it's basically a real good deal - and you never have to correct the time.
Mcrackn Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 I feel weird wearing a watch, I just check the time on my phone.
Austen Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 I feel weird wearing a watch, I just check the time on my phone. Ummmm me too......Must be about three years since I've worn a watch, my 'phone has a large (full-screen) screen-saver with the time and this months calendar....... Austen.
Nevyn72 Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 Watch, glance at wrist..... Phone, dig out of pocket, fire up screen, put back in pocket..... I'll kep using a watch thanks!
stahc Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 Watch, glance at wrist.....Phone, dig out of pocket, fire up screen, put back in pocket..... I'll kep using a watch thanks! i do the same as austen...........mainly as there are too many things to bash it on at work..............not that i'm blaming work..........i'm just clumsy
ando9185 Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 I feel naked without my watch, so I've always worn a watch. However, I now have some work in the food industry and I'm not allowed to wear any jewellery (wedding bands only) and so I can't wear my watch.
Groover ! Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 If your looking for that classic shape you cant beat Longines. How ever if your looking for a modern look Ive just bought a Seiko sports down from $900 to $420 and even the wife liked it.
-Bishop- Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 I'd still recommend a Citizen watch, my original warranty was really good, something like 6-8 years, and in that original time I think the only thing that broke was the clasp clip, and it was back with a new one in about a week. Can't fault it's time keeping ability either, it maybe drifts a few seconds a year, my only gripe is for some weird reason batteries don't last like they used to, I suspect they don't them like they used to...

My dress watch is a citizen eco-drive (solar powered), no batteries! Just got to remember to leave it out in the light on occasion.......
Mcrackn Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 I think you can get watches that recharge with motion
Austen Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 My dress watch is a citizen eco-drive (solar powered), no batteries! Hmm...Peter racing across the Nullabour in his dress Austen.
Mining Man Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 I think you can get watches that recharge with motion And 2 different types at that. My folks gave me a Seiko Kinetic when I left Sydney to start my first "real" job in mining, 9 years ago. I've replaced countless bands, had the glass replaced and also had the internals repaired too. If it weren't for the engraving on the back it would have been binned a long time ago. Anyway, that's getting off the track. The Seiko Kinetic range has an internal unbalanced wheel that on movement of the hand, wrist or arm, rotates a dynamo that recharges the internal battery. I worked with a guy that had a really old Russian watch that had a similar unbalanced wheel as my Kinetic. But rather than rotating a dynamo it wound the spring of an old-school geared mechanism. It had a glass back that showed off the internals, and it was an absolute piece of art!!
Nevyn72 Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 Hmm...Peter racing across the Nullabour in his dress Austen. Sorry Austen I only go as far as Parkes.... Still 238 Kms of dead straight flat track, I suppose the Broken Hill drivers have to keep themselves amused somehow!
Nevyn72 Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 ......internal unbalanced wheel............a really old Russian watch that had a similar unbalanced wheel as my Kinetic........ Unbalanced wheel, from Russia!? что удар!

mello yello Posted March 25, 2007 Posted March 25, 2007 Sony declares Digital Watches the winner dateline 25th March 2007 Following hot on the heels of a lukewarm reception to a late night release of its PS3 Playstation where some stores reported only about 40 or so people milling about to pick up their previously ordered PS3 game consoles, Japanese electronics manufacturer Sony Corporation has weighed into another controversial format war and thrown its support behind the innoccuos digital watch. Head of Sony Entertainment Ken Kutagari announced at a press conference in Tokyo today that Sony would be soon buying the rights to digital watches and the digital technology that goes into making them tick. In a landmark court decision a Tokyo Supreme Court Judge ruled in favour of Sonys proposal by declaring that since that technology was not subject to a current copyright or patent then Sony had a good case in placing a copyright on the technology allowing in effect to have Sony be the prime copyright holder of digital watches. Mr Kutagari "We at Sony are always thinking of the consumer and are always eager to squeeze" When questioned as to whether he said "squeeze" or "please" Mr Kutagari tapped his watch a few times held it to his ear and promptly left the room with a look of disdain and urgency. A spokesman for Swatch declined to comment
