momaw Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 Now I'm not sure if this is as a result of the firmware upgrade or not but getting games to work on a PS3 is not always as easy as sticking in the disc. At first I thought my local copy of Call of Duty 3 would not work on my import PS3. When I tried to play the disc I got an error saying the Disc was not supported. "Uh Oh" I thought. So I put in my new local copy of Virtua Fighter 5 and bingo, after an agonisingly long save file setup it worked. Not content to give up on Call of Duty 3, I decided to change my system setting from 1080i to 720P as the game only supports resolutions up to 720P (this might sound like an obvious reason but keep in mind Resistance: Fall of Man only supports 720P as well but will play fine with the console set to 1080i with only a warning on startup that the resolution is not optimal). It's not so easy to change resolutions with the new update. No longer do you select the resolution you want rather the PS3 does it automatically based on the resolutions supported, so I appeared to be stuck at 1080i as it considered it the best resolution. I ended up telling the PS3 manually that my TV's max resolution was 720P (by deleting the 1080i option) and it then (begrudgingly) changed the resolution to 720P. Low and behold this worked and I can now play Call of Duty 3. The question now is, will anyone with display devices supporting greater than 720P resolutions have to manually switch the PS3's output every time they play a game with a different resolution? This is a very messy process for something that should be automated. The PS3 should recognise the games max res and output that rather than throwing up an "incompatible disc" error. With games have different resolutions (ie COD3 at 720P, Virtua Fighter 5 at 1080i and I guess some to come at 1080P) this is at best a very annoying problem.
AndrewW Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 trust Sony to take something that should be so simple and make it ridiculously complicated

The Aussie version of the PS3 certainly changes resolution automatically without hiccups.

Well switched from Motor storm (720p) to ridge racer 7 (1080p) without an issue, if that's what you are getting at. The Bravia showed the resolution each time a new game starts up

Skid_MacMarx Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 I have a 1080i screen and had no issues with the 720p Motorstorm playback,,,nor any issues with the Monster House playback at 1080i
