nightbreed Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 I was considering buying a VP50 for my soon to be purchased PDP-5000ex. I had a chat to a guy on AVSForums in the U.S and he said he would be more than happy to sell & ship his unit to me. He is asking about $1900US for the unit. I worked out that would be about $2500-2600 landed here. I have decided not to go ahead with the purchase. If anyone is interested just let me know.
Gino Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 Don't you also need to factor in shipping and GST/import duty costs too?
nightbreed Posted March 23, 2007 Author Posted March 23, 2007 Don't you also need to factor in shipping and GST/import duty costs too? $2600 is with shipping costs. As far as duty goes I'm sure he can do a "Price Japan"
Stets Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 Don't you also need to factor in shipping and GST/import duty costs too? There shouldn't be any GST on a 2nd hand item
AndrewW Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 There shouldn't be any GST on a 2nd hand item Good luck using that argument at customs ...
Jliang70 Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 Good luck using that argument at customs ... I have not been charged of any custom duty for both VP30 and VP50, VP50 was declared as repaired video processor....
brodricj Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 There shouldn't be any GST on a 2nd hand item Whether or not it's 2nd hand is immaterial, Customs will use the price on the commercial invoice that accompanies the goods for figuring any additional amounts payable. It would be hard to swing it at less than $1000 (to avoid GST) because VP50 is on their system and they know how much they cost!

benthx Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 Why don't they know how much an HC5000 is then? Because the duty and gst is paid on the actual amount on the invoice declared which is called a commercial invoice. You will also pay gst on the freight amount as well. What they are worth here is a diferent story. I had harmon kardon avp1a which was faulty. It was replaced by a citation 5.0dts direct from harman corporate headquarters signed by Dr Harman himself. As I was able to prove my purchase here in OZ was for the avp1a. The new unit became exempt. Ben
mejutty Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 Just out of curiosity what is meant by they can always do a "pricejapan". If it needs to be in a pm then send away.
RodN Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 I think they mean that pricejapan understates the cost of the unit on the packaging so you come in under the amount which triggers duties and tax. That's fine but I don't think people should 'expect' to get away with no GST or Duty. They should expect to pay it then if they don't get slugged its a nice surprise.

Customs use the price on the commercial invoice that accompanies the goods to determine additional amount payable so as long as the seller or the selling company declare it below $1000 including shipping the buyer can avoid GST.
