And I never thought I'd say this...

I really wasn't that impressed. Sure, the disc I watched (Kingdom of Heaven) looked and sounded better than DVD on my display but I wasn't blown away enough to really feel its worth it. At least not with my admittedly poor display (a budget 32" 768p LCD set). And as far as I know its not like I have a poorly transferred film.

I'm wondering about whether for this display I'd be just as happy with a upscaling DVD player.

I'm actually half thinking of putting my PS3 on the market and perhaps looking again once I have a larger and higher res display that'll do the format justice. And perhaps then reasonably priced dual format players will be available.

I actually feel kind of ashamed.

sulimo,

was the display doing the downscaling? Are you able to set the PS3 BD output to match your display rez? Just wondering if that would make a difference. I assume your using hdmi and not the composite cables that came with the PS3.

Doesnt the PS3 STILL have a problem with 1080i output?

Well don't feel too bad about it, HD whether Blu-ray or HD DVD, requires a 'big' screen to demonstrate the dynamics of the new medium.

HD is best displayed on a projector screen where the visual impact is more enveloping, also contrast and deep blacks play a big part in the visual presentation of an image, which sad to say LCD flat panel displays tend to be lacking in.

For games, not for BD.

Andrew.

edit: and from my understanding, only for games that don't natively support 1080i (ie they are written to support a max of 720p).

And that's only an issue for displays that do 480p/1080i only. And those aren't exactly common these days.

Yeah. It was. I haven't tried that yet, but the display seems to do OK scaling HD broadcasts to 768p so I wouldn't have thought that would be an issue.

True. I knew that, but I still expected to be blown away enough for me to not start questioning my purchase. The pains of being an early adopter on a budget.

Most find they don't notice the "huge' difference reported by some. Mainly it is due to a smaller sceen size, but, if you watch a few HD movies over a few weeks and then go back to a regular DVD, believe me, thats when you start to say, "hmmmmm, maybe this HD stuff is that much better".

You won't notice a large difference on that screen res and screen size. Full stop.

I got my PS3 yesterday. Don't have any bluray movies yet, but after playing Motorstorm and Fall of Man for couple of hours, I put in the regular DVD.

Man, the quality/resolution of regular DVD really put me off. It's so inferior to even HD games.

So true....I was a little underwhelmed when I put my first high definition movie in my player...I was expecting the colours to be blinding and the image to be jumping out at me...after a while I started noticing the differences....now I seem to be extra picky when watching a normal DVD. I just got Kiss Kiss Bang Bang on Blu Ray and watched the trailer after flicking through some scenes. Big step down in quality!

Don't despair sulimo, like the others have said, you will not enjoy DVD's as much after you watch a few HD movies.

Save up and look at getting a PJ or a bigger screen and your investment in HD will not go to waste.

I've stood in JB watching the BD movies a few of times now. I thought the PQ on both the Samsung display and this other one (Panasonic?) was breathtaking. The skin tones and textures were very detailed, and the sharpness of the images were excellent (just about as good as a CRT!). FWIW, I think the Samsung player has a few problems. I saw both the other night, and the Samsung was diplaying brief freezes during the film (some Nic Cage film). Another time I saw the same player was briefly showing vertical lines of artefacts during panning shots on "Fantastic Four". There were three or four evenly spaced about 10 cm apart. Now the Samsung has been available for a while, and obviously getting a good "soak test" in a commercial environment, but what does it say about the quality of the player? The PS3 appeared to working perfectly, although on a different movie (Into the Blue) and obviously not as many working hours as the Samsung.

Another beer, Cheryl

The samsung does have a major problem for anyone looking to buy a BD player, unfortunately all BD players at present have this problem. It's that they will not be compatible with future discs. The Matrix trilogy release brings it all home that the current BD players are "unfinished" products and are not ready for what is coming. AT the prices being charged for them I think this is outright criminal. If you are serious about getting into blu-ray the PS3 is the only choice, as with all current BD players, it's days are numbered, but at least it will still play games when the other players are left only capable of playing back the raw film and probably a straight Dolby track (as the uncompressed audio will either be in one of the new codecs that no current players can decode or are BDJ dependant). Anyone who buys a standalone now is just in for heartbreak when by the end of the year they are paying $100US odd for a matrix boxset which they can only access the films themselves and a basic audio track on.

This is a genuine post and not simple BD bashing. At present the PS3 is the best option both price and feature wise and the fact it won't bring you to tears when you need to start looking for a 3rd or 4th gen standalone to take full advantage of the format.

I am at present using a Sony Trinitron Multiscan 17sf CRT monitor, it has a resolution of 95 pixels /inch. One needs to use a magnifying glass to see the individual columns of pixels on the screen.

With 1227 pixels across the screen the image quality is excellent from 2 feet away, but moving back to 6 feet viewing distance the on screen text is unreadable.

So a small, high resolution screen just does not have the required pixel size to display a high resolution image in all its detail from a normal viewing distance.

Image detail is gradually lost as the angle of view decreases over distance.Pixel brightness also becomes a factor in all of this too.

A projector is the way to go if you can control the lighting.

I'm surprised Panasung hasn't dropped in to say "I told you so" yet.

On my 32" LCD, I can notice the improvement watching HD DVD, but it probably wasn't enough of an improvement to make me fork out for a dedicated player.

It is a completely different story on the 96" projected image.

There may well be an increased demand for HT projectors in the years ahead considering how cheap quality LCD projectors have become.

tell me about it

try bidding for a good 9" CRT on ebay- still in good demand; Arghhh....

edit: ive just realised ive miscontrued chicken man's comments- I thought he was inferring LCD projectors have become "cheap" as in non -repairable , throw away quality , but I think he meant they were becoming more affordable

how's that for a case study in inflexion & syntax!!

I can tell you that i see a clear difference watching on a 46" 1080p panel...for sure

Noticeable difference on my 55' 1080i panel. Colours and definition are just superb. I dont notice as big a difference with dark scenes compared to my standard DVDs compared to scenes with colour

However I think my DVD player does a sensational job also
