anthonysimilion Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 According to normangerman at MediaSpy (from Adelaide), it's here and it's in the 4:3 safe area! Thicker than the SD watermark, bright, and did I mention, in the 4:3 safe area? Ugh! * All I'm going off are the linked screen captures. Not in Perth yet - still using old PRGs.
abdelrm Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 What is Ten doing - totally going backwards, they were setting a good example. So ringing and complaining

anthonysimilion Posted March 22, 2007 Author Posted March 22, 2007 adjust to the impending changes. By developing a fantastic real-time hardware watermark removing device?
steve buscemi Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 (edited) Not showing up in Sydney. I think a watermark on HD content was inevitable, only a matter of time, but having it in the 4:3 safe area is terrible. Edited March 22, 2007 by steve buscemi

pheggie Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 By developing a fantastic real-time hardware watermark removing device? wonder if sticky taping a small fresnel lens on the screen over the logo would do.
Timmy Downawell Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 they probably only put it in the 4:3 safe area so that when everyone complains they can move it to the 16:9 safe area as a "compromise".
pheggie Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 Letterman has no Ten logo in Melbourne tonight on Ten HD
anthonysimilion Posted March 22, 2007 Author Posted March 22, 2007 Letterman has no Ten logo in Melbourne tonight on Ten HD It is only in Adelaide, it seems.
abdelrm Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 After reading this thread : New Channel Ten Hd Watermark! : it seems to be a quite a bitter sweet moment, I think the positive points outway the HD watermark, just
anthonysimilion Posted March 22, 2007 Author Posted March 22, 2007 Apparently it changes the way material runs through their systems, so that everything including ads & promos will run first through the HD system and then be downconverted to SD or left alone as required. Doh! This means there may be a chance they won't do anything about it, as this means analogue would be sourced from a centre cut (or 14:9 arc) of the SD transmission (which, under the new system, would be a downconvert from the HD transmission!). Time to get the phones ready...
anthonysimilion Posted March 22, 2007 Author Posted March 22, 2007 I think the positive points outway the HD watermark They're all negatives or neutral to me: - HD advertisements - impartial - HD promos - impartial - Bright HD watermark near middle of screen - negative - Butchered credits, popups on HD - negative What are the positives? How are better quality advertisements and promos complete positives, outweighing the butchering of credits/popups, plus a very noticeable HD watermark near the middle of the screen?
minchjp Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 What are the positives? HD football, golf, rugby and letterman.
DrP Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 I said it many times before... as soon as the networks think enough people watch HD, all the crap that is seen on SD will appear on HD. Looks like that time has arrived.
anonymez Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 By developing a fantastic real-time hardware watermark removing device? That would take at least an hour But software only, for use on a HTPC
anthonysimilion Posted March 22, 2007 Author Posted March 22, 2007 HD football, golf, rugby and letterman. The only benefit I can see is that HD is the new lowest common denominator. However, if Seven, Nine and ABC can do it - TEN should be able to implement some way of adding the watermark after the different video streams are produced.
anthonysimilion Posted March 22, 2007 Author Posted March 22, 2007 That would take at least an hour But software only, for use on a HTPC I would use that.

Looks like that time has arrived. At least they're starting to think people who watch HD actually matter. Interestingly, in the US, even now their HD feeds don't have popups, or program return graphics (like next, and now). Only their SD.
anonymez Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 I would use that. The basic idea is to obtain appropriate bitmaps, clean them up, use the delogo or x-logo Avisynth plugins and tweak the script till the results are good. 7 and TEN watermarks can be removed (more or less) seamlessly. I use the method mainly for archiving to x264 mkv, but can be done in realtime via ffdshow's Avisynth processing. The Drawback is no DXVA, so higher CPU load.

True enough which is just one of the reasons I can't be bothered watching Australian FTA much anymore. I have seen HUGE SOLID BLUE FOX logos on US broadcasts, but nasties like that aren't common. The logo was so bad that even the designers of the giant green Australia WIN logo would wince at it.
natxp2006 Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 It looks like they've added the new watermark here in Brisbane too
