nikko1974
Hi, I've in the process of building my first HTPC, which has the following components in it: CPU: AMD 3600 X2 Mobo: Asus M2NPV-VM (using onboard 6150 GPU) RAM: 2 x 512mb 800mHz Tuner: DNTV Dual Hybrid PCI-e S3 HDD: 400gb Samsung SATA2, 320gb WD SATA2 DVDRW: Pioneer 111D My display is a Sony KVHR32M31, running out from the HTPV via component video cable (from the HDTV breakout card). I have been trying to run both 1080i and 720p (all done via the NVidia control panel) and am getting these jaggy, rapid moving little 1cm or so horizontal lines that shoot up and down the left edge of my screen. Hard to describe them but they seem to move up and down VERY rapidly and are quite offputting. I am not sure if any of these things are the problems OR can be improved: * When 1080i is used, NVidia will ONLY send it through at 60Hz....the TV manual SAYS it does 50/60 but maybe it prefers 50? Though how to get this. * Is this a picture synch problem? If so would using a VGA to RGBHV cable help....? As the Sony can accept an RGBHV input. Any ideas appreciated as its kind of got me stuck at present and am unsure what to do. Thanks in advance, Nick
Widescream1503559516
Not sure if this is the result of a picture synch problem, but I would try using the full RBGHV connection. I think most people on this board who have the Sony fine pitch and run it with a HTPC use a VGA to RBGHV cable with excellent results. I know that I have. You can get a suitable cable from Jaycar for just under $40, and you would also need 5 BNC to RCA adapters as the cable they sell does not have RCA plugs on the RGBHV end. RGBHV is apparently a better connection type than component anyway, so even if your component setup was working, it would still be better to run the Sony with RGBHV as it is an excellent display and it would be a waste to not connect it in an optimum manner. Hope your problem gets sorted .
DMK
I have pretty much an identical setup and I also experienced that interference on the left of the screen. I got around it by zooming in on the desktop to move it off-screen. I think it disappeared altogether when I installed a 7600GT, so maybe its a bug with the onboard video. Using component for the tv-out is a losing battle if you ever want to get 50Hz (see here). I've now got the Jaycar cable and 5 BNC->RCA plugs and I have finally got a 50Hz signal. The colours seem more vibrant and there is no interference on the left of the screen. But.... something is still causing a slight stuttering every 5 seconds or so, and I haven't been able to track down the cause yet. Even still, its the most watchable its ever been. I'm running mine at 1280x720 which seems like a good compromise for image quality and being able to read text in Windows.

Hi Widescream, yes I know of the Jaycar ones - and will give one a run - don't like the wuality of their cable though but they have a good return policy so will see how we go. I agree with regards to not getting the best signal quality through the KVHR just wish it had digital inputs! I have pretty much an identical setup and I also experienced that interference on the left of the screen. I got around it by zooming in on the desktop to move it off-screen. Hi DMK, wow well is good to hear someone else has that annoying left side flicker! Yes, on the desktop I get that stutter as well.....mine isn't as regular as that but is very annoying too. 720p is my fallback position but I'd really prefer to run at 1080i to make the KVHR earn back some of its purchase price! Thanks for the tips.....will give them a try! Cheers, Nikko
nikko1974
HELP....haha I don't know what more to say these days. I would LOVE to hear from anyone who is running a Sony KVHR series CRT with a HTPC and what settings they have going into their tv and what cabling. I am at my wits end here. Blew another $60 on a crest d-sub to RGBHV cable.....the flicker is gone but TV does not want to display in any resolution above 720 and the overscan on the desktop is horrible! Is a mission just to turn the PC off again! PLEASE any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks, Nick
nikko1974
Surely there's some HTPC users with a CRT as their primary display??? This forum is dead but not that dead. :-/
visions
I have the HR36 - the 86cm version of your set. I spent many, many months till I got a picture I was happy with. My pc setup is similar to yours except I have an ATI card (old Radeon 9800). I started off using a vga-->rgbhv cable and that gave a good picture but the overscan was bad and I could never get it right using either Powerstrip or the ATI Catalyst software. Then I discovered a patch that fools the Catalyst software into thinking that the official ATI component dongle is connected so now I just use a vga-->component cable and I run 1280x720p resized to 1152x648 which totally eliminates overscan and gives a good quality picture. I can also do 1080i resized to 1776x1000 (I think) which also eliminates most of the overscan but I find Windows too hard to use at that res. I have been using this setup for about a year now and I am happy with it. I might actually go back to the RGBHV cable and have another go with that to see if I can get a better picture...though to be honest my current setup is very sharp to my eyes so not sure how much better the RGBHV could be. One thing that helped me a lot during the setup was having a second pc - I plug my laptop into my router and VNC into my HTPC. Then I can stuff around with the display settings as much as I like and am still able to see what is going on even if the picture drops out on the tv. Using this setup saved me a lot of time and hassle. The only downside to all this is that I can't see any BIOS screens or anything when the PC starts up so anytime I need to make changes to the BIOS (which admittedly is hardly ever) I have to plug in an s-video cable. I know you have an nVidia card but hope you found this somewhat helpful.
