momaw Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 Toshiba Sets New Low with $400 HD DVD Player PricingThu Mar 22, 2007 at 04:06 AM ET Continuing their aggressive push to lower HD DVD player pricing, Toshiba has announced they will reduce the cost of both of their first-generation decks beginning April 1st. Beginning next month, the new prices will be as follows: New prices from April 1st are: * Toshiba HD-A2: $399 (previously $499) * Toshiba HD-A20: $499 (previously $599) The manufacturer has also dropped the price of its current best-selling HD-XA2 second-generation HD DVD deck, which now retails for $799 (previously $999). At less than $400, the HD-A2 is now the cheapest stand-alone high-def solution on the market. Toshiba's move also comes only weeks after Sony announced their own swift price cut on its Blu-ray player, the BDP-S1, from $999 to only $599. Clearly, the major hardware supporters on both sides of the high-def format war are not pulling any punches. (And no, this is not an early April Fool's joke!) And with player prices for both format's dropping so swiftly, it may not be long where low-cost next-gen decks begin to approach standard-def DVD levels. Source I think they meant second gen
Skid_MacMarx Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 Well, Olivier Van Wynendaele, Deputy General manager of HD DVD at Toshiba Ltd did say that they (Toshiba) would undercut any lower priced Blu-ray players with even lower prices. So don't be surprised to see eventually USD 200 -300 players out there Surely this is good news for the consumer and further promotes the uptake of HD...

Thats right Skid, the more people in HD (whichever format) the better for the future of high def. More customers mean more releases, quicker and cheaper.
nis200979 Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 So don't be surprised to see eventually USD 200 -300 players out there Remember when people said eventually DVD players would go below $500. My prediction is that EVENTUALLY BD/HD-DVD players will go below Aud $100, although I reserve the right to not predict which year. My prediction would probably be the year 2013-2015. Should we start a poll?
betty boop Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 dropping prices of the hi-def players is great news for the future of hi-def and will along take up in a big way.
Tweet Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 With the price reductions on these other models surely there is latitude to discount prices on the XE1 and the E1 C.M
