Doug1503559538 Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 Is the PQ of blu-ray and HD-DVD going to be similar to HD FTA quality ?? If so then I am a bit confused because as whilst the PQ on my new 50" Plasma is definitely better when watching HD compared to SD or DVD , it is not really that much better (I can only really notice the difference by flicking quickly from SD channel to HD channel and back again). If I was just watching a FTA digital channel I would struggle to be able to tell if it was SD or HD on its own. Like a previous poster , I find DVD quality still to be quite stunning. So, why all of the excitement for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray when the PQ is only a marginal increase ??? It's not like the huge difference when going from VHS to DVD. Is there a bit of the "early adopter" syndrome going on here ?
AndrewW Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 Is the PQ of blu-ray and HD-DVD going to be similar to HD FTA quality ?? no So, why all of the excitement for HD-DVD and Blu-Ray when the PQ is only a marginal increase ??? It's not like the huge difference when going from VHS to DVD. because it's not a marginal improvement. don't forget, it's not just PQ either, the sound quality is on a whole new level as well. webbsy1503560295 Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 it is alot better than FTA as the bitrate is higher we do not get 1920by1080i in aus we get 1440x1080i so hd-dvd and bluray will be better that also compared to most fta have a bitrate of around 10-11mbps and hd-dvd and bluray have around 18-20 so u will get a better picture.
Doug1503559538 Posted March 22, 2007 Author Posted March 22, 2007 So I shouldn't cancel my PS3 order ???
Gino Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 yes... grab an Xbox360 and a HD-DVD drive! j/k!! I'm sure you'd be happy with it, apparently it's a good BD player. Haven't you seen Bluray being demo'ed?

Haven't you seen Bluray being demo'ed? Yeah , i've seen the demo's but only on 42" and smaller screens. Usually LCD. The problem is that even standard DVD's look pretty good on this size screen. I did see Blu-Ray with a 1080p Plasma at Myer Melbourne and it was kind of in an artificial environment - so whilst it looked great, I couldn't really tell how great.
Hussla Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 At work we got the PS3 on a 32" Sony LCD, the picture is great! BUUUUUUUT........ Fast movement she McBlurs like McCrazy! It's not the PS3 but the screen. But I have seen blu-ray in Tokyo and yes it whollops broadcast tv. And that's the demo setup supplied by Sony themselves!
webbsy1503560295 Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 i got the ps3 and a pioneer 435 amd the picture quality is very good but not as good as HD-DVD. but it is a vast improvement over any FTA and as andrew said the sound quality shits all over any tv.
Ata Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 There is no technical reason why the picture from a BD player should be any worse or better than a HD-DVD one, bar some minor differences in allowed maximum peak bitrate. Once the studios understand the advantages of VC-1 and AVC codecs over MPEG2, they will be virtually identical. The weak link in HD production currently is quality of source material (the film itself) and the digital transfer.
Julian L Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 There is no technical reason why the picture from a BD player should be any worse or better than a HD-DVD one, bar some minor differences in allowed maximum peak bitrate. It's not. I have BD transfers that are the equal of the best HD DVD transfers. People seem to think because one BD title doesn't look as good as their HD DVD then all titles are deficient. And it has nothing to do with whether you use MPEG2, AVC, VC1 or MPEG 4.

Once the studios understand the advantages of VC-1 and AVC codecs over MPEG2, they will be virtually identical. But there's the rub. The MPEG-2 encoded Blu Ray discs I own don't generally look as good as my HD DVD collection. The AVC encoded discs I am starting to get look as good as HD DVD. MPEG-2 should be confined to the bin where it belongs. Andrew.

T800 Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 So I shouldn't cancel my PS3 order ??? God No. Ive got one, and the BR player part of it is spectacular !!!! Games are another story so far though..
momaw Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 Q....why are my ch10 and ch9 capture card screenshots always 1920x1080? don't know but the resolution is most definitely not 1920x1080. They have been known to upscale so that may be it.
betty boop Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 don't know but the resolution is most definitely not 1920x1080. They have been known to upscale so that may be it. hi mom ch12 in melb is 1920x1080i, ch 90 is 1440x1080i and ch70 is trialling 1440x1080i. none are still anywhere what the hi-def disc formats can produce. main limitations of broadcast are bitrate and suffer pixelation, blur, mpeg blocking etc. the hi-def disc formats really show how good hi-def can be. one day maybe we might get braodcast quality like that.
