Burbank, California (March 22, 2007) -- If ever a film series was meant to be seen in HD DVD, that series is now here. The Matrix, the legendary, groundbreaking sci-fi film, and its visually dazzling second and third installments, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions were produced with future technology execution in mind. The Matrix, the first DVD to sell one million copies and to date a $1 billion worldwide franchise, will be part of two new definitive high definition collections to be released by Warner Home Video and Village Roadshow Pictures on May 22.

The Ultimate Matrix Collection, for the hardcore Matrix fan, presents the complete adventures of machine battling truth-seekers Neo (Keanu Reeves), Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) in all three of the Wachowski brothers’ post-modern epic films. This collection will contain, for the first time, all three HD DVD versions of The Matrix series with more than 35 hours of bonus material in 5 double sided discs. The second offering, The Complete Matrix Trilogy, contains HD DVD versions of the three Matrix films and the three Revisited features in a 3-disc set.

Both The Ultimate Matrix Collection and The Complete Matrix Trilogy come with the In-Movie Experience (IME), an exclusive interactive feature that allows viewers to enjoy new ways of accessing interviews and other material. For these titles, the IME will let viewers experience the evolution of all The Matrix’s ground breaking elements through the recollections of the cast and creative team.

The Matrix Series on HD-DVD is the definitive and ultimate film compilation for the ultimate hi-def format, plus will no doubt make the ultimate Father’s Day gift for sci-fi film lovers. The Ultimate Matrix Collection will be available for $119.99 SRP and The Complete Matrix Trilogy available for $99.99 SRP. Order due date for all is April 17. Blu-ray Disc versions of both collections will be released later this year.

The Films

The Matrix (1999)

The box-office sensation follows the trials of a young computer programmer (Keanu Reeves) searching to determine the deepest reality of a post-Apocalyptic world. His journey uncovers a web of deceit and massive computer-generated illusions obscuring the truth. As the character Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) said to Neo (Reeves), “No one can be told what The Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself.” The same is true for this mind-blowing movie.

The film also stars Carrie-Anne Moss and was produced by Joel Silver. The Matrix was written and directed by Andy and Larry Wachowski, who spent years nurturing and refining the movie’s breakthrough concepts.

The Matrix Reloaded (2003)

In the powerful second chapter of the Matrix trilogy, Neo (Keanu Reeves), Trinity (Moss) and Morpheus (Fishburne) lead the revolt against the Machine Army as it attacks Zion, the last human city on earth, unleashing their arsenal of extraordinary skills and weaponry against the systematic forces of repression and exploitation. In their quest to save the human race from extinction, they gain greater insight into the construct of The Matrix and Neo’s pivotal role in the fate of mankind.

What is The Matrix? The question is not yet fully answered. And it leads to another: Who created The Matrix? The answers lead to more worlds of bold possibility – and to a destiny that passes from revelations to Revolutions.

The Matrix Revolutions (2003)

In the powerful final chapter of the Matrix trilogy, Neo (Keanu Reeves) takes another step forward in the quest for truth that began with his journey into the real world at the outset of The Matrix – but that transformation has left him drained of his power, adrift in a no-man’s land between the Matrix and the Machine World. While Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) holds vigil over Neo’s comatose body, Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) grapples with the revelation that the One in which he has invested a life’s worth of faith is merely another system of control invented by the architects of the Matrix. During the stunning conclusion, the rebel’s long quest for freedom culminates in an explosive battle. As the Machine Army wages devastation on Zion, its citizens mount an aggressive defense – but can they stave off the relentless swarm of Sentinels long enough for Neo to harness the full extent of his powers and end the war?

This is the one I've been waiting for.... The Matrix trilogy in HD, awesome sound, all in the comfort of my own home, and hopefully with an added twist with motion.

BRING IT IS RIGHT!

I wonder how many BD supporters will buy into HD-DVD for this?

Beat me to it. Sorry HD DVD, no exclusivity there...but you do get it earlier.

hehe, didn't bother reading the article. Some reason I was thinking it was exclusive to HD-DVD. Any news on LOTR?

I'm not sure, but they'd have to be releasing the Harry Potter stuff around the time of the next movie hit's theatres, makes sense.

This release, without a doubt will push hardware sales through the roof for most people still sitting on the fence! Only 2 months to wait....Gimme gimme!!!!

Not sure how when you cant get any hardware.

Do I detect a little bitterness in some posts

The Blu-ray release timeframe will be entirely dependant on them getting their BDJ implemented correctly. That is what is holding up these films (and Harry Potter) on blu-ray. Unfortunately, any current owners of blu-ray will not be able to enjoy any of the additional features as they will be 1.1 compliant, and currently no player supports the hardware for 1.1. It is not known yet, but even the menu systems may not work leaving owners with a disc that feels a bit like a ripped DVD copy, i.e. only plays the movie.

Sorry for any bad news in that, but at $99US for the "basic" set and only being able to play the straight movies is a little rich.

but here is a little more info from Highdef Digest

In one of the biggest catalog announcements yet for HD DVD, Warner Home Video has set a May 22 arrival for two extensive box set collections of the blockbuster 'Matrix' series.

The revolutionary sci-fi trilogy, which grossed over $600 million in the U.S. alone, has long been rumored to be in the planning stages for next-gen release. Thought to be a "killer app" -- the kind of trojan horse title that would entice non-early adopters into the high-def fold -- Warner is already gearing up for one of its biggest-ever HD DVD releases.

The studio will unleash two different configurations, both streeting simultaneously on May 22.

'The Complete Matrix Trilogy' will span three discs and include each film in the trilogy -- 'The Matrix,' 'The Matrix Reloaded' and 'The Matrix Revolutions' -- plus a four bonus disc with extras, 'The Matrix: Revisited.' Each film will also include an Interactive Movie Experience (IME) feature exclusive to the HD DVD, which will deliver an video commentary featuring interviews with the cast and filmmakers, behind-the-scenes footage and more.

'The Ultimate Matrix Collection' will replicate the extensive standard-def box set of the same name which debuted two years ago. In addition to the three IME-enhanced 'Matrix' titles and 'The Matrix Revisited,' an additional 35 hours of bonus materials will be included.

Warner has not yet issued full specs for either box set, including whether what, if any, supplemental features will be presented in 1080p. But we'll certainly keep you posted.

Suggested list price will be $99.99 for 'The Complete Matrix Trilogy' and, for only $20 more, you can grab 'The Ultimate Matrix Collection' for $119.99.

No Blu-ray version of either 'Matrix' set has been announced. However, Warner says it plans to release a comparable version later this year, once Blu-ray's much-touted BD-Java environment is finally ready for prime time.

Between this and the pirates films, I'm gonna be broke in May.

I thought they would have sold each movie separately...not a box set.. Most people I know prefer the first one and are not that keen on the other two..

Maybe that's why, they couldn't sell many of the sequels otherwise........

Gotta love it. Over at the digitalbits they have hardly a paragraph on the release of the Matrix trilogy on HD DVD (4 measly lines, while between the main page post and it's link in the rumour mill, the rumoured US release of Hellboy gets 7 lines ). You can bet your bottom dollar if Blu-ray was getting em first it would be another 4 page dissertation on why it is another reason HD DVD is dead. Hypocritic tossers. To think I used to think they were a balanced unbiased source of information. Guess everyone has their price. You hear that Sony, pay me enough and I'll make crap up for your too.

That's actually probably not far from the truth.

Although I agree the first movie is the best, I did still enjoy number 2 and the third would have been ok without all the 'interview with the architect' crap.

I fixed your post for you

Andrew.

You're not half wrong, after barely mentioning the Matrix trilogy he goes on to say

Around the Net today, Toshiba is apparently fighting back in the industry press (see this story at Engadget) against the BDA's claims of last week that they expect their format to oust standard DVD in the storage realm in three years (click here and here for that). Toshiba's Deputy General manager of HD-DVD, Olivier Van Wynendaele, calls the touted 3 to 1 software sales advantage in favor of Blu-ray "propaganda", because he claims that those numbers were artificially inflated by free Blu-ray movie vouchers being redeemed by PlayStation 3 owners. Now that would be a shocking claim... if Toshiba could show hard data to indicate that they haven't included all those free copies of King Kong (that were shipped with Microsoft's Xbox 360 HD-DVD add-on drive) in THEIR format sales numbers, and if they could further show that they won't be including in their future sales numbers any of the FIVE free HD-DVD movies they're now offering anyone who buys one of their HD-DVD players. This seems a lot like the pot calling the kettle black to me. And by the way, it was THREE free movies just last month - an offer they were running way back in October of last year (click here). So which camp is it that's working harder to inflate their software sales numbers now? HHhmmmm... How long do you suppose it'll be before Toshiba starts offering $100 players and TEN free movies? You just watch - that'll be their holiday promotion later this year. I'll tell you what, this format war is rapidly becoming a joke. Can someone finally just end this thing, so we can all move on? Universal? Hello?

That's it, it think I am officially done with that site. I like my news sites to be about news, not propaganda. Especially when his "facts" are wrong. All reports everywhere explicitly state that the HD DVD given away by mail in redemption don't count as sales.

Just so the fanbois don't think I am not visiting his site due to his BD support, well I don't mind if he does support BD (I own one to), but when that support turns into bias that effects the quality of the reported "news" then thats a reason to leave.

I think I would have to wait for the reviews before "lashing out" for the boxed set (either format) as I was only planning to get the first one.

I suppose for an extra $USD20 the ultimate box set would be better value..

Based on Warners efforts with HD DVD releases to date, I have no doubt this will be top tier. The reviews of warners Happy Feet just went up on High Def Digest (best version went to HD DVD due to superior audio track) but it is supposed to be the best print ever on High Def.

I'm tossing up about Happy Feet... I could use it as demo material, but I didn't really like the movie and don't know if I could sit through it again
