From this Friday (tomorrow) lunchtime, Geoff at E-Home informs me he'll have an upmarket JVC clone operating at his shop Princes Highway Carnegie. Open to all interested. <edit>

It is the Dreamvision DreamBee - which uses the new JVC HD1 as a base but with a different/sexier cover - the black one my wife reckons looks like Darth Vaders hat  RRP is reportedly $12995

http://www.projectorcentral.com/news_story_981.htm

Anyway, I'll be there at 4pm Friday with bells on for my first viewing of what my HD1 will probably look like (My HD1 will arrive first week April).

I am not sure what technical improvements the DreamBee has over the HD1 but you can ask Geoff that when you come along. The nice thing compared to the JVC is that these are in stock in Australia currently, unlike the JVC that you'd be on a waitlist due to WW demand. I guess if you can't wait and have extra $ to stump up, you could own one tomorrow :D

I'll also be re-listening to the JMLabs Be1027 speakers at the same time as they evidently have a different amp (Primare) than when I listened a couple of weeks ago. The upper end was delicious and I want to hear it again to compare with my 802d

Edit Friday 10am

I just rang Geoff to confirm noon appointment and it appears the delivery is running late. I have rebooked for 4pm.

Also it now appears this is a shared demo unit and Geoff is only having it over the weekend now. So I would recommend those interested ring Geoff for a viewing Saturday.

I love the design, very "Trek". But the specs seem all over the place. Check out the contrast ratio :D

Working tomorrow. But is his shop opened on Saturdays?

Yes of course, it is a bricks and mortar shop so open usual times during week and Saturdays

PS I have only bought a couple of things off Geoff myself previously but he has a good rep with others on this forum

Just went and spent an hour with the Dream Bee. I will leave the more detailed PQ comments to someone more experienced like norpus (thanks for the heads up btw).

Looks: like a black spaceship very cool ... polished black finish all round.

Noise level: was in normal lamp mode and rear shelf mounted. I was sitting 35-40cm directly infront of the air intake & exhaust and could bearly hear it during very quite scenes. I could hear the equipment rack (pio blu-ray & other) which was about 2 metres away. I was told that the fans in this unit is quieter than the ones on the JVC - this needs to be verified. Anyway, if the noise on the JVC is on par with this unit in normal mode than it would be a non-issue for me. I didn't check the noise level on high-lamp mode.

PQ: first to set the scene. The 16:9 screen was a Screen Science 1.2 matt white with 96" or 100" diag (the guy said it was 100"). The pj was fed SD and Bluray via an imported pioneer player. The room was a great setup but is not a bat cave as there was very minor light leakage via the back curtains and LEDs from the A/V equipment.

There was no percievable light spill or bright corners to my eyes.

For reference, I have demoed the following 720p and 1080p pjs: BQ8700 (my current pj), BQ8720, Infocus and Optoma; Ruby, Pearl and Marantz. I have no experience with CRT pjs (but I know what excellent blacks look like on a CRT TV!) so my comments regarding contrast and black levels should be referenced to digi pjs.

Upscaled SD material (Fast & Furious) via the pio was excellent wrt to contrast, colours and 3D effect. Blacks were very very good. The only thing I percieved was that the picture was slightly on the soft side - however I don't believe this to be a problem with the PJ but a combination of the scaling / source material / my high expectations/ my accustomed DLP eyes! Overall, I have to say this is the best SD image I have seen compared to the ditigal projectors I have demoed.

Nex was Bluray material: Into the Blue and the Samsung demo disk. Wow! The deepest black I have ever experienced on a digital pj. The detail, colour, contrast and sharpness was excellent. It was so 3D for me - characters just popped off the screen. I sat there looking for something I didn't like about the image to post something other than praises but could not fault it based on my limited 1 hour with it. I have not seen all the available 1080p pjs but this one is the best I've seen to date.

My only hope is that the JVC I have on order is on par with this unit. I still have a smile on my face thinking about the image I saw!

Cheers,

Cheers,

Without a doubt.

When you are an OEM you never sell your current generation technology in its entirety to your competitor. Other wise the RD that you spent is basically free for them. Therefore you loose your competitve edge. It happens all the time esp. in military projects. EBE knows what I am talking about  If video processing was the factor it would be cheaper to buy a HD1 and a external video processor.

We look forward to your critque NORPUS :D Hey Preacher can you get your hands on one???

But at the end of the day it will have its place in the market like all things do. I like the shape too.

Any chance of swinging by through Cairns Preach?

Possibly Gino. We'll be staying at my parents in Brisbane and flights are cheap as chips. My wife's always keen to go somewhere nw, I'm just not sure whether we'll get the time. I'll definitely swing by sometime though next year when I get back. I've got to rebuild the HT so I'd like to check out Blendzilla. I wouldn't got the whole hog as you've done but a mini-zilla using a pair of XG's is certainly on the cards.

Sorry guys, it was a late and boozy night. My apologies for my tardiness. Just been out for dinner again  after spending all afternoon and evening at a gtg listening to some new speakers

But enough of the excuses

The Dreambee was very well appointed. The finish is metallic looking, but tbh in a very dark room it was hard to tell anything except shape. It is quite large/wide even compared to the BenQ8720 although not as tall. The shape is take it or leave it - kinda french in that come f me way :P Reminds me of an aquatic beast, something Steve Irwin might avoid

It is very quiet - the specs say only 22dB and yes it is no problem even sitting underneath it. This is supposedly something much improved on over the JVC, altho I have yet to do that comparo myself (two weeks)

The remote is easy to use like the BenQ but for those who like to set and forget it is a 'dangerous remote' in that calibrated settings can be too easily changed without realising. The backliight was fortunately easy to find, as the dedicated HT room at ehome has black walls and ceiling. (Interestingly the black ceiling still showed some reflection - something I noted for me to think about later)

To see any pixel structure you need to get so close it is ridiculous (<0.5mtr) The pixels are also hard to see compared to lcd and dlp, as the fill factor is really full. Almost all the pixel is filled - even when viewing from centimetres - a logical reason why lcos makes for a very film like image. I noticed something similar with the Pearl at my place versus the 720p dlp - the 1080p lcos has almost no pixel structure - quite film and crt like up close more than any other digital display I've seen

I even sat at ~1 screen width for total immersion for a while. And yes it was quite viewable at even this short distance with no sde visible and just a clean and huge picture. I cannot do this on my 720p dlp

The inscene contrast was spectacular, a lot of punch to the image. The black bars could have been blacker, but still better than my dlp. Could I see the screen on a fully black image - yes easily. It is not a crt with ability to have total absence of light. I didn't expect that anyway. The blacks in the image were very dark and plenty of detail in the shadows. Sharpness was good in picture, although on the green test grid this was not super sharp (it was several pixels wide). I should have played with the focus perhaps, but didn't.

I did not test the convergence on white test pattern grid as there wasn't one on the dreambee menu and I didn't have a disc with me. Certainly nothing noticeable at all.

Bright corners? No didn't notice any of that

Piccies here

And there was a special treat, the premier of the first Pioneer BluRay player in Australia

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/v3/p...DetailComponent

And what a beautifully detailed picture at 1080p24 on the Dreambee

Every grain of sand was resolved in the 'Into the Blue' movie

I also reauditioned the JMLabs Be1027 or tried to critically listen - trouble was that big 100" window just drew my attention away constantly and it was impossible to concentrate on the audio with such a visual feast to be gobbled :D

I only had an hour with the dreambee, and really didn't put it through any rigorous tortuous test regime as a reviewer would. I just enjoyed the image for what it was and got a little immersed in the content of the film because the image was so good. Isn't that a good sign - I can usually pick up faults on the delivery, which can wreck the immersion - this was a big plus for the dreambee. Given this dreambee I believe to be reportedly a clone of the JVC with a different case (quieter and sleeker french design), I am very excited to be getting the JVC in first week April.

I guess the other advantage of getting a dreambee over a JVC currently is that you can get one tomorrow in Australia as opposed to waiting literally months for a JVC. They reportedly have stock currently, although I cannot see that first shipment lasting too long even at the higher pricepoint. RRP is $12995. What else is there in the 10-20K bracket here that would beat it I wonder? Not much if anything but I'd be guessing
