ejm
I believe that Blu-ray will win, I even canceled my HD-DVD add on for the 360 after I did some research. HD-DVD may be a good format but it just has no support. Blu-ray players are selling better than HD-DVD players and then you have the 3 million odd PS3 sales on top of that. Casino Royale was released on both in the USA last week (or the week before) and sold 20 000 copies on Blu-ray compared to the 13 000 on HD-DVD. I can see MS dropping their support for HD-DVD in the near future. Here is a interesting quote that I found "Buying a HD-DVD player now is like buying a ticket for the Titanic after it had sunk". In a way I think that that is sort of true.
Hussla
What the HD DVD market really needs is for the Kung Fu manufacturers to get in and give Toshiba some competition, then there would be some real promotion of HD DVD.Blu-ray really is not competitive with HD DVD if it is reliant on the PS3 as its numerical base because the PS3 will only have a half life of 2 years before the prices of standalone Kung Fu HD DVD players will be $500 or less. When this happens Blu-ray will be just another Sony format that will finally fizzle out like all the other monopolies Sony has tried in the past. C.M The difference between this and other formats is that Sony has far more support on their side compared to their previous attempts, they're doing better than Toshiba whom only has their own player out, whilst Pioneer, Samsung, Panasonic already have players out in the markets. Considering movies like Casino Royale, Pirates of the Caribbean are so far exclusively Blu-ray & DVD, that and the PS3 is blu-ray equipped, Blu-ray is more better known to the average joe, compared to HD-DVD which most people dont have a clue about. At work whenever I talk to customers about it, everyone seems to know or have heard of Blu-ray, whilst most people dont have a clue what HD-DVD is. And I keep bring this up, but something as small as pronouncing the terms: HD-DVD to speak it, it seems so clunky. Blu-ray: It just rolls off the tongue. This war will probably be slow, but I have no doubt Blu-ray is going to win. I think the bad signs for the HD-DVD camp was when Microsoft decided to not include an internal HD-DVD drive, what does that tell us? well it gives a sign that MS doesnt have faith in HD-DVD, or thats how I see it. djOS
If I could buy a good quality, affordable, fully featured, 100% Region Free Sony BluRay Player right now I would say yes "HD DVD is Doomed!" and order one right now - however I cant buy such a player and wont be able to buy such a player for a very long time AFAIK. ..... and to be honest this really gets up my Goat cause I really want a BluRay player and from a technical stand-point I've always like the "physical specs" of BluRay ..... However I've bought a HD DVD player which does all of the above, its only major weakness imo is studio support!

Even if the current studios stay were they are in the U.S. of A, a lot of BR exclusive will be released on BOTH formats by Studio Canal in Europe. Its HD-DVD all the way baby! Give it time, both formats are new and prices will adjust to suit. PLaces like CDWow will eventually stock both formats and they dont charge for shipping. Have faith young Padawan! Tweet
Two values will always win out regardless of circumstances and hype, price and quality of product.....and HD DVD has both. Most movies are worth buying especially at the prices being asked for, so rentals as did DVD/VHS will play a big part in which format will be mostly adopted. It may well be that a PS3 will co-exist with a cheaper standalone HD DVD player in many homes, one essentially for games and occasionally a BR movie while the other as a dedicated player. The problem for the PS3 is the over use of its laser diode if in constant use as an entertainment centre, where as a standalone player has a very easy life with the occasional movie, possibly once or twice a week. The point being made is that the standalone player is easily going to outlast the PS3 in the diode stakes and it is for reason that a format based on a games machine remaining functional is a shaky foundation. If too many of these Ps3's go down, and Sony is expecting to sell millions of them, then servicing is going to be a real headache for the customer. Had the PS3 had a Blu-ray drive that simply slotted into the case and could be easily replaced by the consumer then the PS3 /Blu-ray would be a winner but as it is it is handicapped by servicing. This has all been said before but it is something that may bring about the demise of Blu-ray if the PS3 develops laser problems in a year or two. djOS
yeah im sure most of us remember the early PS2's dropping like flies during and after warranty period due to ppl using them as DVD players - If I remember correctly there were a couple of class actions against Sony in the USA that were quietly settled out of court. Essentially it turned out that the original HW versions of the PS2 were not designed to withstand constant operation of the laser & optics (most games load in ram and dont continuously read the media) and as a result the player wore out rapidly if used regularly as a DVD player. That said, it is possible that Sony have not made this mistake again and designed the PS3 to last when being used for both gaming and movie playback. ejm
Ok, it wasn't Casino Royale , I have got the wrong movie (Casino Royale is the first HD movie to sell 100 000 copies!), the movie which I should have put was 'The Departed'. And the latest figures for March (might be February), Blu-ray movies outsold HD-DVD movies 2 to 1. Source. Here's a little sales chart from DVD empire I do not follow the format 'war' very closely at all but in the last few weeks I have been reading little bits here and there about it, personally I will not be buying a standalone player of either for a long time yet, the PS3 is good enough for me to play movies on. This is the way the distribution and rights to these movies work in the "real" world (i.e outside of the US of A).
Gino
So I finally watched my first Bluray film - Casino Royale - PQ and SQ are pretty good, mainly watched it for the D-box motion code support... hmm, I'm finding it hard not to buy into both now

Has there been any more word from Time Warner in relation to their dual format disc? The assumption being that it would be BR on one side and HD on the other, or something along those lines. I wasn't too far off with my assumption: http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/18/threes-...ne-hybrid-disc/ HD and Blue ray one-side due to varing depths and standard DVD the other.
