Joey76 Posted April 17, 2007 Posted April 17, 2007 'Joey76' date='Apr 16 2007, 10:18 PM' Yeah, I run a SD box through my MDR250 - didn't even bother with the analogue tuner. Also the home movies that I recorded back onto the HDD from DVD were finalised and playable on other DVD players in the house .......How are the video recordings from the sd stb direct to the dvd drive from the aux inputs Joey76 .........does any one have any info on current sd boxes for sale that have timers that activate from standby with either component or s-video that can connect to the MDR250 .....thanx again for the new info 'Joey 76' &' techo' ................. --ThisIsAllToMuchFun-- .......... . . Techo and ThisIsAllToMuchFun, In response to your questions - I just recorded 10 minutes of the Simposns direct onto DVD from a live feed via my SD STB. I then finalised the disk, entered the menu in DVD mode and managed to dub the footage back onto the HDD, no problems at all. So I can confirm that the dubbing works for DVD's created from camcorders and from TV shows recorded from the unit itself (via a SD feed). I have a Teac ITV-D500 sd stb. It has timer functionality. I set the timer on it, then also set the timer on the MTV MDR-250. When both are in standby mode, they both come life at the time set, and switch off back into standby mode when the timer period finshes. It works like a treat - and records the shows that I want when sleeping or at work. The Teac I think was relaesed a couple of years ago, so not sure if they are still out in the market place. I bought mine late last year from a place not far from me that sells factory second/refurbished/end of line electrical items - cost me $40 from memory. It has 2 scart outputs - one which is hooked upto the LCD via a TV scart lead (scart - rca/svhs) into the SVHS input and another AUX output that I have hooked upto the MDR-250 via another TV Scart Lead into the RCA inputs of the MDR-250. All works fine and very happy with picture and audio quality. Only thing is stb must be on to record from it - don't think the MDR-250 can record from the stb if it, the stb is in standby mode. For a bedroom setup, I'm pretty happy with how it works. Hope it helps.

nzmike Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Well it looks like I could be in the market for a DVD recorder which I would use solely to record form my Foxtel iQ via it's SCART output... so I need to know if this unit has component in (so I can use a SCART --> component cable from the iQ). If it does is there any reason why this wouldn't work? (Others have reported no problem recording from the iQ to a DVD recorder in real time so hopefully all would be OK if I got one of these units.) It sounds like a good unit for the price - any one seen it in metro sydney in the last few days? If so, what price was it? As an simpler alternative does anyone know of anything even cheaper in the way of DVD recorders that I could just use to record from the iQ? I really don't even need TV tuners in it as I have a dedicated HTPC with 3 DVB-T tuners already (and I could probably even do without an HDD if I had to) - it's really just to archive content from the iQ... anyone got any recommendations?

Guest etsui Posted April 20, 2007 Posted April 20, 2007 Can anybody tell me if this recorder support the .srt subtitle when playing back the DivX Files?
flookey Posted April 21, 2007 Posted April 21, 2007 Has anyone successfully selected the 16:9 Screen format? I'm currently using the built in analog tuner connected to an analog TV via the composite connectors. It doesn't seem to make any difference if I'm watching FTA or the HDD. Am I missing something or is there a problem with my unit? All the other functions seem to work. BTW, when I've recorded to HDD using the built-in analog tuner, I've found that on channels 2 & 7 spurious noise is introduced in the form of sporadic partial-hortizontal lines; this noise appears randomly, and in any location on screen - it's a bit annoying. These channels are fine when not recording to the HDD. Has anyone else noticed this problem when using the built-in analog tuner? I suspect that the quality (or design?) of the power supply may not be up to scratch. Not sure if this is also relates to the quality of the inbuilt tuner. Using a STB would overcome this problem, but it'd be good not to have to rely on another box and sync timers, etc., especially if the picture quality is otherwise good for programs that I watch once and delete.
DR.ZOIDBERG Posted April 23, 2007 Posted April 23, 2007 Is there any firmware out for these MTV DVD HD Recorders?? if so where do I get them from please Thanks

I'd really like to know this as well - could someone give a subtitled movie a run and see if the subtitles are displayed from the .srt file? TIA... Mike

Guest nms Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 I picked up a MDR250 yesterday, I cannot record anything which is in the timeshift memory. This was a useful feature on the previous model. The previous model also allowed you to navigate material that was being recorded in the timeshift mode.
George777 Posted April 28, 2007 Posted April 28, 2007 I picked up a MDR250 yesterday, I cannot record anything which is in the timeshift memory. This was a useful feature on the previous model. The previous model also allowed you to navigate material that was being recorded in the timeshift mode. I bought this model from coles last week. It is excellent for the price of $299. I have transferred all my old video 8 stuff onto dvd's. I tried this previously with a computer and not only was it a pain in the bum, but the quality when played back was poor. With this recorder, the dvd's have turned out beautifully. I couldn't be happier with mdr250. It is very quiet and the tuner, although analogue is just as clear as anything else. It doesn't overheat either. I opened it up and found that the hard drive and dvd burner are connected like computer ones so I'm thinking I could always replace the dvd burner with a normal computer one. The hard drive on the other hand is actually a good quality one. A 250gb seagate with 8mb cache and 7200rpm speed. It also has all the inputs you could want. The only problems I find which don't bother me anyway are - trying to finalise a dvd before it has been used up. - it only receives up to 576i with the component input. I have a hd top box and it wouldn't receive a signal until i lowered the resolution. All in all, a great recorder and more than half the price of other supposed better brands which alot of the time don't have as many inputs, are region locked, aren't as compatible with different media, and don't play divx.
taylordiving Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 I'm very happy with this unit but have noticed 2 drawbacks. One was alluded to in an earlier post which mentioned that, when dubbing from the HDD to DVD, you cannot navigate through the system (DVD, HDD) while the dubbing is taking place. Also, the dubbing icon does not stay on the screen until the job is finished as was the case with the TS 1080 and MDR5501. This is a minor point which doesn't matter much. The other is more important as, after I dubbed to dvd and before I finalised I was not able to edit (e.g., a-b delete) the dubbed footage on the dvd even though the manual says you are able to do this (and does not list any limiting factors such as DVD+or-RW only). Is this correct or did I just do something wrong?
TNTTony Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Hi Guys, Just purchase the MDR5501 last week. Tried to find the MDR250 but could not find it. Here are some questions: 1. How would I go about exchanging my MDR5501 for the MDR250? ie. what excuse should I use I still have the receipt 2. My MDR5501 has an annoying timer record icon that appears on the screen if you have a time record planned. Is this the same as the MDR250? 3. Can the MDR250 copy USB to HDD? Thanks guys in advance for your help Tony

Thanks guys in advance for your help Tony Hi Tony- I can help with your first question as I've returned these a few times. Any old excuse will do, in fact you can say the timer icon is bothering you and you want a unit that does not leave a timer icon on the screen once a timed record has been planned. A better excuse is to say that the item does not dub dvd's properly and let them figure out what you mean. As far as your next two questions I'll let someone who has experienced those two aspects comment. Don't worry about the exchange, though, as it should be no problem.
techo Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 what excuse should I use runs to hot 2. My MDR5501 has an annoying timer record icon that appears on the screen if you have a time record planned. Is this the same as the MDR250? no 3. Can the MDR250 copy USB to HDD? no
TNTTony Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Thanks Guys. I might just return it :-) EDIT: Another question if I may: - When I turn on the MDR5501, the recorder automatically loads the DVD (if there is a dvd in the tray). This is annoying when I just want to change a timer setting, or record something quickly or change some setting. Is this the same for the MDR250? Thanks Tony
