Reactions from scientists

Many of the film's arguments have been strongly disputed by climate scientists who support the consensus view regarding human influence on climate. The IPCC was one of the main targets of the documentary. In response to the programme's broadcast, Sir John Houghton (former co-chair IPCC Scientific Assessment working group 1988-2002) assessed some of its main assertions and conclusions. According to Houghton, three of these were true, seven were not true, and one was possibly true. He flatly contradicted two of the programme's statements, that "The troposphere is warming less than the surface" and that "Volcanic eruptions emit more carbon dioxide than fossil fuel burning". Overall he described the programme as "a mixture of truth, half truths and falsehood".[6]

Doubts have also been raised about the way the programme selectively used data which was sometimes decades old in making its arguments, altered graphs to make it appear that older observations had been made more recently, and used older scientific studies when more recent research would have disagreed with the film's conclusions.[5][7]

[edit] Carl Wunsch controversy

Carl Wunsch, one of the scientists featured in the programme, said he had been "completely misrepresented" in the film and had been "totally misled" when he agreed to be interviewed.[8][3] He said the film was "grossly distorted" and "as close to pure propaganda as anything since World War Two."[9] Wunsch was reported to be considering legal action[9], and to have lodged a complaint with OFCOM, the UK broadcast regulator. [10] Filmmaker Durkin responded, "Carl Wunsch was most certainly not 'duped' into appearing in the film, as is perfectly clear from our correspondence with him. Nor are his comments taken out of context. His interview, as used in the programme, perfectly accurately represents what he said."[9]

In a letter written by Wunsch on March 15, 2007, he explained that he believed in climate change and thought it "almost certainly has a major human-induced component". He goes on to say that he had thought he was contributing to a programme which sought to counterbalance "over-dramatisation and unwarranted extrapolation of scientific facts". He particularly objected to how his interview material was used:

"In the part of The Great Climate Change Swindle where I am describing the fact that the ocean tends to expel carbon dioxide where it is warm, and to absorb it where it is cold, my intent was to explain that warming the ocean could be dangerous - because it is such a gigantic reservoir of carbon. By its placement in the film, it appears that I am saying that since carbon dioxide exists in the ocean in such large quantities, human influence must not be very important—diametrically opposite to the point I was making—which is that global warming is both real and threatening."[3]

"Anti-burp pill for cows could save planet

A pill that cuts flatulence in cows has been developed in Germany as a way of tackling the smelliest contributor to climate change. "

Now all they have to do is make it available for the second largest producers of organically generated gas - politicians... :D

Well the Global Warming Nazi's seem to conveniently overlook, ignore and forget the reports of warming trends occuring on other planets in our solar system currently, evidence points to that Mars itself is undergoing a warming trend...hmm.

I was wondering who was going to say that, there were a couple of likely suspects :D

But isn't the main point that regardless of whether global warming is man-made or naturally occurring it'll affect us just the same, so we should look at ways to minimise the consequences? Arguing over the root cause doesn't solve the problem.

That's fair enough - but you still need to identify root causes to determine the most effective responses available

Well if its just nature and the natural progression of things, addressing it becomes somewhat more problematical don't you think?

So what if it's entirely natural, a product of cosmic rays and changes to solar output?

What's your solution? make Ra the Sun god sign the Kyoto treaty to limit solar output?

If your referring to the sun getting 10% hotter every billion years, that's not exactly an earth shattering contribution.

The earth's climate has been changing throughout the planet's existence and will continue to do so. The pricise ratio between background climate change and the impact of human activity is still unknown.

Climate change is undesirable for individual species because they must either adapt (which can be costly) or die. We are no exception to this so we do need to minimise our impact on the climate and not augment any underlying natural change.

Mars is interesting in itself. As a species we must at some point expand beyond this planet. To not do so would mean stagnation and stagnation ultimately means death. It could be that habitable worlds are so far out of reach that the first step in our colonisation of other planets on any reasonable scale could be the terraforming of Mars.

I'm not one of the boffins that has to come up with a solution. Who knows, maybe if variable solar output (say) would increase worldwide temperatures by 5 degrees then changing our use of resources lowers that to a 2 degree increase.

But when you boil it down there are four outcomes:

1. We do nothing and accept whatever happens

2. We implement some changes and it has no effect

3. We implement some changes and it has some positive effect

4. We implement some changes and it has some negative effect

In three of those outcomes, the worst that can happen is we'll have no impact on whatever happens. So why not try something - if it works, great, if it doesn't, then we'd better prepare for whatever the climate decides to do to us.

The final outcome is I guess what you'd call the "whoops" option. The only way to totally avoid this is to choose option one "do nothing". I'd rather we have a go.

Yes? So what indeed...

Just because you know that your car is going through some changes that could affect it's performance - regardless of whether they're just normal 'natural' wear and tear, or because you've been floggin it; doesn't mean you decide not to look after it, unless you have such little respect for what it provides of course.

From my perspective; I look after the houses I live in regardless of who owns them. I have a simple rule for those who visit. Treat my home with respect or bugger off.

For those who believe there's no point to looking after this planet because what's happening might be natural (like that's an excuse to stick the finger of juvenile defiance in the air with pride) the Martian environment may well be a better place to live because it's far more naturally created than Earth's environment is ever going to be.

Ra the sun God is long gone. We either step up to the plate and look after what we should have been looking after all along, or we naturally end up losing it.

Well, some members of this forum are truly proving my worries have a fair basis.

I wonder if the Flat Earth theories are going to come back into vogue?

Seems that many otherwise sensible people have a lot of trouble shaving!*

I have it on good authority that he's feeling a little queer at the moment!:D

It's all relative. Next to a shorter person, that queer is considered tall...

BTW: Just saw the headline "Howard wont save the world if it means a couple of coal miners need to look for better jobs".

I think that kind of narrow minded bullshit sums up the guy!

I hear there's strong demand for asbestos at the moment ... quick, reinstate Wittenoom!

And while yer at it, give those nice Japanese a hand ridding the world of those nasty whales!

Oh well, if the bribes help set up his family dynasty, then who are we to complain! :D

Howard won't save the world?

You mean - he could if he wanted to?

Good gracious, I've been accused - incorrectly - of being his spokesman - but I really didn't think anyone would come up with such a claim

What have you been up to during your absence Santa? :D

With that purported kind of ability we could first save - and then rule the world - if we wanted to of course - but then who would we be able to whinge about?

Shock horror - don't go there :P
