Caracarn Posted March 18, 2007 Posted March 18, 2007 I recently purchased a Panasonic Viera 50" Plasma with builtin HD tuner. My original antenna that came with the house when I bought it was not digital compatible and was just chucked up into the roof space. So I went to Bunnings and bought an antenna and a mast and mounted on the roof, I am also using a splitter (also purchased from Bunnings) to provide a second antenna point. The signal quality of the TV is measured out of 10 and I get the following results when I do an autotune SBS 10/10 ABC 10/10 7 10/10 9 10/10 10 1/10 The signal quality is brilliant for all channels except for 10 which is unwatchable. I then proceed to adust my aerial to improve the quality of channel 10. Unfortunately the best I can get is 5/10 which is watchable (if you dont mind the occasional blockiness) but results in the quality of the other channels dropping to less than half of what they were. I can't see there being any problems with my antenna or cabling because the quality of the other channels is maxed out. So is this a channel 10 problem? I was led to believe based on my reading here that all of the stations have their antennas around the Bickley area. So why is 10 so crap? If it was SBS I probably wouldnt worry about it as I can get that through Foxtel cable but I want all the commerical stations to be as high a quality as possible and 10 especially as I like to watch the F1. I'm in Woodvale. Can anyone make any recommendations?
alanh Posted March 18, 2007 Posted March 18, 2007 Caracarn, This is not a channel 10 problem. It is either a faulty antenna or a cabling problem. Read Get the Best Reception, Perth and read the links. AlanH
Caracarn Posted March 18, 2007 Author Posted March 18, 2007 Caracarn,This is not a channel 10 problem. It is either a faulty antenna or a cabling problem. Read Get the Best Reception, Perth and read the links. AlanH I am still confused as to why the problem is with my equipment if every other channel works perfectly. How is 10 different to the other stations, it broadcasts on the same band as the other commercial stations. Surely if there is a fault with the cable or the antenna the other stations would suffer the same. Surely if I can get 10/10 for all of the other channels the cabling is OK atleast? I'm also wondering if I "fix" the problem, is it just going to cause one of the other channels to lose quality?
alanh Posted March 18, 2007 Posted March 18, 2007 Caracarn, There is a couple of reasons for channel 10 being so poor. Their transmitter is at Carmel where as the others are in Lesmurdie and Bickley. Secondly when you have only one channel affected, any poor connection can cause reflections in the cabling or in the antenna which can cancel out with the incoming signal. This is dependent on the cable length. It will be channel specific. Bent antenna elements can also cause the above effect. The only other possibility is that you are trying to receive channel 65 from Bedfordale which also carries TEN program. Rescan the box, Check that TEN is being received from channel 11, 219500 kHz AlanH

I also get bad channel 10 when running straight to TV or through DVR....and the odd signal drop-out when going through HD PVR's.... But this seems to have started sometime in October I think. Had all new cabling and digital antenna installed in July of last year... Live in Wembley Downs here.... FG
