Toshiba unveils HD-EP10 HD DVD player

16 March 2007 23:02 by Dela

Toshiba has shown off a new stand-alone HD DVD player at CeBIT in Hannover, Germany. This is the third player that will be available in the European market. The HD-EP10 offers 1080p full HD output, improving upon the HD-E1's performance. The player also features upscaling abilities for DVD-Video, up to 720p, 1080i and 1080p. It is set to retail for about €699.

Included also is support for the lossless audio compressions Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio (but unlike the top-end HD-XE1, there are no analogue 5.1 audio-out connections). "Toshiba’s HD-E1 and HD-XE1 set benchmarks in high definition home entertainment, both in terms of performance and value for money," said Olivier Van Wynendaele, Deputy General Manager, HD DVD, Toshiba Information Systems(UK) Ltd.

He continued: "The HD-EP10 raises the bar yet again. We want consumers to experience the highest HD resolution currently available at a price that's right for the market - and that's exactly what the HD-EP10 achieves."

think its great it has support out of the box "for the lossless audio compressions Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio" no analog outs so imagine that will be left for the HD-XE10 ? or HD-XE1 replacment ?

great to see tosh is on their 3rd gen now in regards hi-def players  and boy quick turnaround too !

Clearly this is further good news for those who have already bought into the format as well as it shows Tosh's ongoing commitment to the format

So are we going to see the HD XE1 released on the 1-4-07 or thereabouts, this is just painful, waiting.

C.M

Worse still CM if you paid in full for an early March arrival

Yes very positive news. However, I also hope that they keep up the firmware support for current models, eg. include 1080/24 in a future firmware update for the HD-XE1.

It's unlikely to support 1080@24fps tho as this will be left for the XA2/XE1 series.

this will probably become the $1000 model and the e1 will would be $799 maybe.

i see rio in melbourne is selling the E1 for $799 already. must be caught with some stock

geez, they must have quite a few to move, thats under what I got quoted for a couple of people who were after the E! in the group buy which was $820.

It would of course help if they were able to produce sufficient quantities of the 2nd gen to import into Australia before the 3rd gen is all over the rest of the world!

The A20/EP10 is not 3rd generation, it is a new model that fits features wise between the existing 2 models.

Reports are that it does.

The XA2/XE1 has analogue audio out and the better HQV scaler to differentiate it.......

Looking at the specs on the toshibahddvd.co.uk website it mentions it decodes Dolby Digital / plus / true HD & DTS / DTS-HD(core only) up to 5.1...

Does this mean that both the HD-EX1 and the HD-EP10 won't decode the full lossless DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack and only the 'core'?

If this is the case, are there any players that have been released that will decode Dolby Digital True-HD and DTS HD Master Audio and/or pass this via HDMI to a reciever capable of processing the lossless soundtracks? (ie like the new Onkyo 605 / 805 / 875)

I would have agreed that this is the mid range between the e1 and the xe1 but for the fact it has dts hd ma decoding apparently. The e1 and xe1 only decode the core dts [1.5 mbps]at this time [software upgrade -who knows?]. DTS HD MA decoding means it decodes the core plus the extension packet ie 24/96 in at least 5.1 maybe 7.1 channels.

By the way the great thing about dts core decoding is if you have a dts 96/24 decoder in your amp ;you can still get 5.1 24/96 khz sound if the disc is encoded with it.This isnt at a bitrate to compare with ma I hasten to add :D This ep 10 would be great If it has a reon chip. The ps3 has hdmi ver1.3 so only needs a upgrade to pass a bitstream to an onkyo 605 etc ;rather than the lpcm it uses currently I think :P

edit: To contradict the toshiba spokesman about dts hdma capabilities ;Kooks link says it only has dts core 5.1 capabilities
