I just wanted to ask a question about the Yamaha RX-V2700b and the I/O Assignment functionality.

I notice that the unit has 3 HDMI Inputs (DVD, DTV & CBL/SAT) and 3 Component Inputs (also labelled DVD, DTV & CBL/SAT) (and associated S-Video, Composite, Analog Audio and Digital Audio inputs). I suspect that normally if you use both input types it just prefers the highest format (e.g HDMI) available (i.e. plugged in).

However can I use 2 HDMI and 3 Component inputs (with associated audio) for 5 separate devices?

Say I wanted to plug in two devices with HDMI outputs and also at least two devices with Component outputs - normally I'd think I couldn't do this as there's really only three "unique" inputs on the device capable of HD signal inputs (DVD, DTV & CBL/SAT).

However is it possible for me to plug say a HDMI DVD, HDMI DTV, Component into CBL/SAT but then use the I/O Assignment functionality (Page 96 of the manual) to Assign the current DTV Component Input to one of the other currently unused inputs (say VCR1 or VCR2) and also assign one of the unused Optical Digital Audio inputs to this same (e.g. CD, MD/TAPE or CD-R). I could then I assume even rename the Inputs to whatever I wanted (e.g. Xbox and Xbox360).

Certainly can. I have the RXV-2700 set up with a Panny DVD recorder connected via HDMI , foxtel box connected via S-Video and output via HDMI to a Panny Plasma. Assigning different input and names is a doddle to do and the added benefit is that the Yamaha will upconvert the signal to HDMI 1080i if required.

Remor you can connect anything you want into the hdmi, component, svideo sockets, dosent matter if you plug eg.dvd into dtv or cbl you just go into the i/o set up and change the settings so it knows whats pluged where and then you can rename the inputs whatever you like eg.change cbl to foxtel so foxtel will appear on the screen and the front of your amp.

yes you should be able to do this, that is one of the beauties of upconverting/switching amps.

Yep - altho I wasn't so much concerned with the renaming and basic I/O assigning - more for instance plugging two different devices into the same labeled ports and having the ability to switch between them. Take this simple example for instance:

I Plug a DVD player via HDMI to HDMI IN1 (DVD) and the Optical Digital to the DVD (second) Optical Digital In. Then I plug an Xbox 360 via Component into the Component A Input (also called and associated with DVD by default) and the Optical Digital to first Optical Digital In (CD).

Now I want to set things up so when I select DVD I get the DVD pic and audio and when I select say Xbox360 I get it (note that the video has to come from what is originally the DVD Component inputs and the audio from the CD TOSlink).

I was playing around with this tonight.

You can definitely do what you are asking for here.

Its pretty cool actually, and very flexible.

I like the fact that you can rename the inputs both on the remote and the display on the amp.

Andrew.
