Mr Ploppy Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 Hi all, I have finally decided to bite the bullet and retire my old Aaron sub sat speaker system. I have recently bought a Pio 507 display and would like to get a nice set of speakers to compliment it for music and movie watching. I would like the the system to be smallish and black (to match the panel) I will sit the front speakers on my entertainment unit, either side of the tv. I have about 250mm between the edge of the panel and the unit edge. The viewing area is 5m long and one side is open to the dining and kitchen area. The floors are tiled (will put a large mat down though) and the closed side wall is two large sliding doors. My neighbor lives behind the tv and where the sub will sit so I don't need something earth shattering (though would like that) I live in Mackay and to be honest the local hifi shop doesn't really carry a large range of speakers that I would find suitable to my needs. I got a quote off him for a B&W MT30 system at $3894 which I thought was a bit dear but willing to pay that for something decent. His parting words to me when I left was that it was a shame I had an amp and dvd player already as he had a Bose 48 system that would blow me away!!! I bit my tounge and left and have started to research my options. My problem is that I will need to go to Brisbane to audition the speakers so I need a shortlist of speakers so I don't waste my time will I am searching. Shortlist: B&W MT30 KEF KHT3005 KEF KHT5000 Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. ps sorry about the waffly post!
Anthony123 Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 i've recently done some research and listened to a few decent brands such as Canton and B&W 600 series (bookshelves) but finally decided on the Monitor Audio brand... they sounded awesome... costing me bout 5k for it all.... check them out www.monitoraudio.co.uk im getting the GS10 bookshelves the GS-LCR centre speaker (all gold series) then in the silver series im getting the RSW-12 sub and a pair of the in ceiling bronze speakers.... cant wait till its all in my new place!
JasonV Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 what about something like these. http://www.paradigm.com/Website/SiteRefere...leniaSpecs.html
Trofius Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 Mr Ploppy I would jump in the car one weekend and travel to Rockhampton, There is a hi Fi Shop here across from HN called Living entertainment, they have 2 dedicated theatre rooms, and quite a few different speakers to choose from. most of the popular brands, and a huge range of quality receivers/amps.. I wish i had had a look see before i bought my system...
Mr Ploppy Posted March 16, 2007 Author Posted March 16, 2007 Thanks for the replies so far everyone, keep 'em coming! Sontaran, what sub would you recommend to go with the Millenia 20s? MrTypeR, I had a listen to the B&W 601 and thought they sounded a little too "laid back". The equivalent Klipsh I listened to seemed too "in your face" I will definetly try to listen to the Monitor Audios in Brissy but I think bookshelves just may be a little too big. I know I am shooting myself in the foot sound quality wise going for a smaller than bookshelf speaker but I just don't think I have the room. trofius, I will definetly stop in there on my way to Brissy.

brodricj Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 These would serve you well for many years. They are designed especially for use with flat panel displays. http://www.definitivetech.com/loudspeakers...hos/mythos.html
Mr Ploppy Posted March 16, 2007 Author Posted March 16, 2007 They look the goods beejay76. Will include those for an audition!! Good work Autocrat, most people see my screen name and think I have a poo fetish!

elisiX Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 No problems here with the MT-20 system from B&W. If I had an apartment however I would want the larger sub so the MT-30 would be idea. 50mxe20 Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 Thanks Lyle. Any suggestions of your own? Well, I love my Focals but they are not exactly book shelf speakers. That is not an area I know much about (bookshelf size speakers). There seem to be a lot of good suggestions here already. I did quite like the sib/cubs but you'd get a 5.1 system with them for $2K. For $4K you should do a lot better?! I do think highly of Ozzie made speakers tho.
Mr Ploppy Posted March 16, 2007 Author Posted March 16, 2007 Wow, elisiX', they look great with the Pio. Thanks for posting those photos. I haven't heard the M1 sats but I have heard the PV1 with a pair of VM1s. The PV1 sounded pretty good for it's size but I wasn't real impressed with the VM1s though. The guy at the hifi shop said that the M1s were a lot better. Hopefully in a couple of weeks I will find out. Thanks again to everyone who has contributed. You guys are a great resource of information.
joz2 Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 Another addition for you. HERE I'm sure they still let you do home demoes, retun them if you don'y like them.
the-austrian Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 Have a look at the legend Joeys + Kurlette. Not sure logistically how you'd go auditioing them, but they fit your bill nicely. Come in black, <250mm wide and RRP $1k / pair + $1k for sub = $3500 all up for a magnificent 5.1 system. www.legendspeakers.com.au

Looks like they have them at a HN in Bundall of all places!! I will get to see a fair bit of the country by the time I pick my speakers.
Mr Ploppy Posted March 17, 2007 Author Posted March 17, 2007 Another addition for you. HEREI'm sure they still let you do home demoes, retun them if you don'y like them. I have always liked to get a pair of dc x speakers and didn't even think of Vaf while researching. I could get a set of 5 icon|195s and a LFE-03-LE sub for $4,034 plus freight of course. Anyone heard this set up?
Mr Ploppy Posted March 23, 2007 Author Posted March 23, 2007 Well I went down to the local hifi store again today and have come away going off on a bit of a tangent. I had a listen to a pair of Definitive technology 7006 floor standers and was very impressed with the sound. The salesman can do the 7006 plus a pro centre 1000 and a pair of BP 1.2 rears for $3700. Well under budget and a sound that I would imagine would be better than most sub/sat systems I was considering. The down side though is that the 7006s are floor standers but they are quite slim. I would have ended up with a sub on the floor anyway so I am thinking that it is no big deal. Being a glossy black, they match the Pio very well and having an 8" sub built in to each speaker means that I will not get the problem of having localised LF coming from a single small sub. What do you guys think? Will it be too much for an apartment?
blybo Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 What about the Whatmough sat sub system, sorry no link. I've always been a fan of his designs but as my system is complete I have not auditioned them myself. The sats are slightly larger than most but at least they're black
Mr Ploppy Posted March 23, 2007 Author Posted March 23, 2007 What about the Whatmough sat sub system, sorry no link. I've always been a fan of his designs but as my system is complete I have not auditioned them myself. The sats are slightly larger than most but at least they're black I considered them, but the upright centre speaker put me off. I would just like to add, that one of the reasons I will try to go with the local hifi shop is to try to buy local. They are the only hifi shop in town (Mackay) and I feel I should support them if I can.
