angelus512
Probably been answered so I apologise but if I get the Toppy 7000 HD PVR can it record Foxtel by any chance? Or do absolutely no PVR's in existence record Foxtel except their proprietary IQ device? Because truth be told the PVR would be used sparingly for TV maybe only a show or 2 recurring weekly but probably the bulk recorded on Foxtel but I'd rather have the PVR than have to "rent" the IQ box. So can you PVR foxtel or do you HAVE to have their IQ to do it?
madmax
The answer is no, however in many ways the new breed of DVD-Rs with digital tuner can be considered a PVR, as you can record directly to the HDD. And with these, you can record Foxtel by connecting to one of the inputs. Check out the DVD Recorders with Digital Tuner List thread.

So correct me if im wrong but if you record to a dvdr from foxtel as stated above it is still an analogue recording ?

The inputs on the DVD-Rs are all analogue, not that it would make any difference to crappy Foxtel PQ.....so the answer is yes.
Refidim
If you receive satellite Foxtel via Austar or Selectv the MS 820 can record both Pay-TV and terrestrial. I heard HDMI version 200GB HDD expected in May.

From a different perspective, I would have a good think about the merits of renting the IQ, For about $180 a year, you get an PVR (albeit dedicated to Foxtel) with some great functionality and features, and arguably one of the best user infaces available in a PVR. I would be almost willing to pay "The rent" just for the remore record feature. I would guess that most people would have differing viewing habits and priorities in their AV equipment, and while may advice may not be applicable I would not rule out the IQ just because you don't get to own it. (which can be an advantage - if it breaks, and PVRs haven't seemed to have reached lofty relaibility levels yet, you simply argue with Fox to get a replacement). Graeme Ps the MS820 looks like an interesting jigger, and might get my attention if I was on Satellite.
