R34 Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Been offered two reasonable deals I think at my local HiFi shop A 50" Panasonic Plasma (without tuner) for $2999 or A 55" Hitachi Plasma for $4490 ( minus the $500 cashback from Hitachi) Which one is the better deal? I originally went in looking at the Pioneers as everyone says they are the best but I just don't see the difference in PQ between it and the Samsung PS50Q7HD. Was impressed by the Phillips 50" with Ambilight though. Can some experts please set me straight? Cheers
Anton-P. Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 What picture was being played on the screens when you compared them? Best to ask the shop to record Ch 10's David Letterman on a HD pvr & play back for you, then you can judge the screens at their highest performance. If pq is similar, personally I would not pay 50% more for going from 50" to 55".
R34 Posted March 15, 2007 Author Posted March 15, 2007 All TV's were playing the same Sony demo video
Drizt Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 personally think the Panasonic plasma's are easily the best in the plasma range.
OakenShield1 Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Whatever your eyes decide! $1500 for five inches is a bit exy though, costs less than that for a more personal 5 inches

metal beat Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 between the Hitachi 55 and pana 50 inch, I think the PQ is a little better on the pana. The 55 inch hitachi is a little soft If you have the room the extra 5 inch's will make a difference. Have you seen the new 50 inch hitachi plasma with 1280 x 1080P resolution - true HD 1080P compatible. more resolution than either pany or pio that both have 768 res. I have seen them in JB for $3990 every day price with HD tuner. that is what I am looking at buying

(which is 1920 x 1080p) 1920x1080 = 2,073,600 pixels 1280x1080 = 1,382,400 pixels 1366x768 = 1,049,088 pixels
Mining Man Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 Dammit.... the marketing people have suceeded ... And they're also right. Didn't you notice the word "compatible"? They never claimed it was 1920 x 1080, just that it could accept a progressive signal of this resolution. Incidentally, so can a few 768 line displays.

Must've liked it as it's now sitting in my home theatre and looks good. At $3400 plus $400 for 5 year warranty seemed good value

I live in Sydney. How does the HD tuner perform?. Reason is that I have a Sony HD dual tuner PVR which has excellent HD PQ, so looking at the hitachi 50 inch that does not have the HD tuner. However if the HD tuner is very good, that may be good for my wife and kids - only one remote for the normal TV watching and the PVR for recording TV shows. How far do you sit away from the unit. cheers
achjimmy Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 1280 x 1080P is still alot better than similar priced 1366 x 768.That was my only point. I dont like the idea of the retangle pixels and the extra processing they have to do to make the 16X9 picture. Same goes for all the 42's and why most 50's look better when watched alongside a 42. my2c
