Does anyone have any inside info on if such a beast is about to be released?

I've been eyeing up the Panasonic and LG models, but the main thing holding me back is an SD tuner. I'm assuming that eventually one company or the other is going to try and make their product stand out with an HD tuner...

I know I'm not going to be able to be able to record a HD signal to DVD-R in standard format, but I would like to watch HD channels live (and hopefully timeshifted) on my 1080p screen.

I figure if I ditch the old VCR, such a box would be able to replace my DVD player and my HD STB, which would only leave me with IQ and the AV Amp (and an XBox) which would save a lot of room, and be tidy.

Also, the wishlist would include:

  • HDMI output
  • Upscalling on HDMI and Composite
  • HD recording to hard disk
  • Region free

Not yet. You can get PVR with HD tuner (toppy, DGTEC, Sony, LG) but not with DVD-r as well. Closest will be the BeyonWiz, but no DVD recording, just playing I think.

Not sure any such beast will be released. May just skip straight to BluRay/HD DVD recorder with HDD and HD Tuner - a few years off yet if at all...

Little point in such a product to be honest. Market is well served by buying a simple HD PVR and a separate DVDR. As mentioned grab the BeyondWiz (if it appears this month) or the Toppy 7000. Both should allow simple transfer of HD files to a PC for professional editing & burning.

Zilch,

I've been looking for a similar product for a while, but as others have suggested I don;t think they exist. I must disagree with PG about the need for this type of product, I think many users would love to have less components in their system.

I have been looking at Sony DVRs and DVD-Rs to go with a Sony Amp. Unfortunately they've just removed their only DVD-R with HDMI from their product list, which I found really strange. I asked them what's going on and, well as you can imagine, couldn't get a straight answer. I was hopping there was a replacement model coming, but no-one seemed to know.....

I really don't even want a DVD-R, but I want to be able to record Cable, and their HD DVR models don't have any external inputs for this, so I was planning on using the DVD-R.

I should mention that I'm trying to create a 'family friendly' system using 1 remote, so while I appreciate I can do what I need with multiple components, I'm trying to keep it simple.

Cheers,

Doug.

Yeah - not planning on buying a BluRay/HD DVD player for a few years at least. However, I wouldn't object to a device that would let me copy HD recorded content onto DVD-Rs in 1080 Dvix format :-)

It's more a space issue - and needing less inputs on my AV Amp - for me. The Harmony Remote solves the remote control issue quite nicely. I think on the multi devices you need to sort of switch modes anyway - say from DVD to PVR etc.

Isn't it where it says how many hours 1080p recording

What digital tuners put out 1080p? I though HD TV only did 1080i typically. Do they do 1080p in Japan?

I don't trust journalists to be accurate with their pees and eyes, but they couldn't have mistaken SD with 1080

Ha, don't you believe it......nevertheless, the chance of these models coming to Aus is the square root of stuff all. How many overseas SD tuner models did we miss out on before the EX75?

I reckon if Panasonic take the EX-75/85, put in a 3rd tuner card which is HD & non-recording (so no major change is req'd to the current recording circuitry) and sell for around $50 more, that'll be sufficient to sell like hot cakes.

Hmmm, that's an interesting concept.....would you just have one connection to your tv and have a button to switch tuners (maybe called HD View and SD Record or similar), or could you have two simultaneous outputs to two separate AV inputs on your tv......

Course you could just switch over to your HD STB (built in or external) and have the same functionality?

I envisage everything will be thru the one existing HDMI connection.

Imagine HD stb, twin SD pvr, HDD, DVD-R, upscaling DVD play ... all in one package.

Peter what you say is true for those already owning HD stb or built-in tuner. But for those without, it's $50 extra instead of $3-400 for a separate HD stb, plus one less box, one less remote.

It's always a bit of a double edged sword. Convergence means that if one bit of your multi-function device breaks or becomes obsolete you have to upgrade the lot. ie BluRay/HDDVD comes out and you need to replace your HD STB, not just your DVD player.

Plus, you will never get a cable box built in...unless the government regulates it.

So forgetting recoding of DVD's does something exist which-

1, Is a HD tuner

2, Plays DVD's and Divx and can upscale to 720p

It would be a bonus if it had a USB port and a further bonus if it did have a hard drive/PVR capabilites.

HD tuners currently exist here in only 3 formats: built-in, external stb and pvr. None of these combines with DVD.

You do have another choice though - build a HTPC
