AndrewW Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=74124 I love this bit: While that has unfortunately reduced the total number of games that will be compatible from the PS2 catalogue, it's important to remember that the PS1 catalogue remains unchanged, and definitely, March 23, we expect over 1000 titles to be playable for PlayStation 2. Within that list is the vast majority of games you would want to play."So I think everybody just needs to calm down and be comfortable that the strategy is still in place." My bold added for emphasis. I love the use of expect rather than promise. And how does he know what that they games a user wants to play are within the 50% that are supposedly compatible ? Andrew.
Skid_MacMarx Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Sony plans to publish a backwards compatibility list on 23rd March, with additional titles set to be supported through downloads via the PlayStation Network. http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=74124 I hope thats true..I was expecting thousands not hundreds of PS2 PAL titles to be compatible at launch...

So they refuse to publish the list until launch day? They couldnt be still working on the list with only a few days to go. Way to go Sony.
AndrewW Posted March 15, 2007 Author Posted March 15, 2007 So they refuse to publish the list until launch day? They couldnt be still working on the list with only a few days to go. Way to go Sony. That's there excuse, they reckon they are still working on it. What a crock. At least release it the day before, you can't tell me they will still be working on the firmware at that point. This brings up another little nasty. It means all those Aussies will have to be jumping onto the net and downloading a firmware patch on release night, because there is no way the players could possibly come preloaded with 1.6 if they are "still working on it". Andrew. I hope thats true..I was expecting thousands not hundreds of PS2 PAL titles to be compatible at launch... Considering he was previously quoted as saying "their focus is on developing new PS3 games, not supporting previous PS2 games" I wouldn't hold my breath. Then again, it wouldn't be the first time Sony have "changed their mind". Andrew.

From what I've read before, this PS2 PAL compatibility issue requires a number of firmware upgrades (not just version 1.6); no time frame was mention so I gather this list will be continually amended.
betty boop Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 hehe the cheek sony telling everyone else to calm down. they need to take soem of their own advice I think rather than whipping nothing up in a lather as they see mto be doing lately in their format push..
Skid_MacMarx Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Then again, it wouldn't be the first time Sony have "changed their mind". Looks like that relative of mine will be waiting a bit longer for our PS2
Hydrology Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 It wasnt that long ago Sony were dragging XBox thru the mud because of their lack of interest in BC. If I remember Sony claimed 100% BC. More like 100% guaranteed to change our minds.
momaw Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 There is only one reason to not release the list to launch day - prevent any one changing their mind at the last minute. If they genuinely cared about their consumers who desire backwards compatibility they would have a list up now and be updating it everytime a title is added. As it is they are ransoming customers "you want casino royale for free? well you better buy at 12.01 and register at 12.02 or you miss out - not time to look at pesky lists. buy buy BUY!"

I noted in this latest flyer (which I picked up at the Myer display today) it states: •Continue to enjoy your favourite games—backwards compatible with hundreds of classic Playstation® (PSone®) and Playstation®2 titles. I'm sure they will get a fair bit of flak with this like the "rumble" issue especially when they first announced backward compatibility with thousands of PS2 titles not a handful....

betty boop Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 got some more propaganda from sony's carl rose today it went.. blah blah blah.. We've got BRAVIA HD TVs, HD VAIO notebooks with Blu-ray, Blu-ray players, HD Handycam camcorders and even new Cyber-shot digital cameras with HD connectivity. And, of course, who can forget PLAYSTATION®3. At Sony, we call this range of HD products HD World and you can be sure that this world is here to stay. and more blah blah blah.. hmm he says we've got "Blu-ray players" ? since when ? nothing on the sony website. Well I'm curious to knwo what blu-ray plaeyr are they talking about ? or is it porkies theyre tellign here ! Dont know why there such a fuss about this cr@p. Seriously anyone with half a brain, would not use the PS3 to play PS2 games. Why the hell do u want to wear out the PS3 $999 laser quicker by playing PS2 games. I know I wouldn't. Most ppl have a PS2 already, and if not u can buy 2nd hand one for $100. End of story.

I thought the PS2 games require a red laser? Does the PS3 have 2 LEDs?
Highjinx Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 I thought the PS2 games require a red laser? Does the PS3 have 2 LEDs? "The PS3 also uses a semiconductor laser dubbed "three-wavelength laser," a package, which can radiate near-infrared laser for CD, red laser for DVD and blue violet laser for BD." PS3 Laser Head
AndrewW Posted March 17, 2007 Author Posted March 17, 2007 Dont know why there such a fuss about this cr@p. Because its another example of Sony over promising and under delivering. Not to mention accusing Microsoft of having a "crap" implementation of BC and then coming out with a worse one themselves.

Tweet Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 thanks for clarifying that HJ.. and an interesting reference Yes HJ ,a good link. We wouldn't have had all this format trouble if Sony had stayed with the .6mm layer depth and 3x data density. Who needs 50 Gig movie discs anyway ? 'Compatibility' is the name of the game. C.M
Skid_MacMarx Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 SCE will shortly announce the list of games whose proper performance was confirmed on the European PS3. Further, the company intends to increase the number of compatible game titles one by one through firmware updates in the future. http://techon.nikkeibp.co.jp/english/NEWS_...0070227/128224/
momaw Posted March 18, 2007 Posted March 18, 2007 [/b]http://techon.nikkeibp.co.jp/english/NEWS_...0070227/128224/ not really good enough though, is it. They should have left the emotion engine in the machine and not f'd around with it and stuffed all those with PS2 libraries they want to bring across.
