franin Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 went to harveys and west coast today and both shops are not pushing hd-dvd at all.At harveys they were stacked in boxes on bottom shelf with all other dvd players.Blu-ray had a special section, the ps3 had the biggest section,They even had an american sony blu-ray which I offered to purchase unfortunaley not for sale it belongs to sony. The guys there did'nt seem to intrested in the blu-ray either.I guess the sony rep came in setup his equipment told the guys a bit about it and thats it.In the gaming department where the ps3 is I think there is more excitement, thats were most people were.At westcoast they had the toshiba displayed on a bottom cabinet with its back to all. There was no frills to it either. To me there was no "mate have you seen the new format hd-dvd", no care at all.Merchandising is getting very slack so are most of there knowledge. How are you meant to sell a new format if not put it in the centre of the shop, purchase a hd-dvd and display it in all it's glory.Harvey didn't display blu-ray either, bar that small off on the side sony hd-display.
betty boop Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 honestly franin dont expect stores like these to do the new formats any justice. there seems uite a following in the specialist stores re HD-DVD hopefully it will get an airing it deserves
Taki Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Sony no doubt have paid these store for advertising. More people know about Blu-Ray and PS3 in Australia than HD-DVD. I haven't seen many HD-DVD ads on tv or radio.
franin Posted March 15, 2007 Author Posted March 15, 2007 Get any prices? Toshiba had a tag of $998. But im more suprised at West coast for not even giving a damn as thats what there meant to be specailising in.The service at harvey norman was shocking as the guy was intrested in showing his girlfriend his muscles than serving anybody else. Sony no doubt have paid these store for advertising.More people know about Blu-Ray and PS3 in Australia than HD-DVD. I haven't seen many HD-DVD ads on tv or radio. The only time I've seen blu-ray advertised was on today tonight and aca.I've seen not one hd-dvd at all.
Maton Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 every store is different, cant walk into one store and expect them all to be the same, try some others that are in the same chain and some that arent. To be honest though, you cant expect to get any decent information from harveys, the majority there have nfi
Skid_MacMarx Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 cwt correct me if I'm wrong. but I have not seen any HD-DVD equipment set-up and on display up here in Newcastle or on the central coast.. its all Samsung or PS3 (Myer Charlestwn)...
Hydrology Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 To be honest though, you cant expect to get any decent information from harveys, the majority there have nfi Ive met a few elder salesman in HN who are very good. Its the young ones in these stores you have to be wary off.

Which West Coast? I went back to my old store on the weekend and was really disappointed. Staff had all changed. Asked for some prices on stuff I knew a bit about and found they were higher than usual. Said I'd bought all my gear there in the past. Guy came back with new prices still about 10% higher than other West Coast stores. Store seemed to be pushing Bose gear. I left feeling really saddened cause it had been a great store previously. I guess I'll move on to one of the others where they seem to care.

xr06t Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 it is a pity.. i havent seen hd-dvd at all and have only had a quick glance at blu-ray! looked really good though.. you would have thought that they would be really pushing the new product, but no advertising, no demos in stores, doesn't make sense to me

laurie Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Well its not really the stores position to promote a product so why has Toshiba been quite? it's really up to them to make people want to get one in the first place surely part of the RRP has a advertisement component dollar value cheers laurie

AndrewWilliams Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Toshiba couldn't market their way out of a paper bag. The format war has already been won as far as I'm concerned. The latest Big W catalogue has a page full of Blu-Ray titles with a blurb announcing BR as the successor to DVD. Toshiba have missed the boat. After seeing the abysmal showing for HD-DVD at last year's CES, the writing's on the wall for Toshiba as far as I an see. I came within a fingernail of buying a HD-DVD player but what I feared would happen has definitely happened. Better luck next time Toshiba. Sony proves once again that marketing can overcome technical inferiority. Andrew (Former HD-DVD supporter)

momaw Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 actually it is not possible for blu-ray to win, but I will keep you in suspense as to why.
AndrewWilliams Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 No need to keep me in suspense - I haven't committed to either format yet and my heart is still with HD-DVD so this is one occasion where I'd be more than happy to be proven wrong.
Skid_MacMarx Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Sony proves once again that marketing can overcome technical inferiority. so you can't see them "co-existing? I thought both formats had the potential to offer the same quality 1080p image?
AndrewWilliams Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Having two formats is a PITA. As soon as you buy one player, your favourite movie is announced as an exclusive for the other format. The only way that co-existence will happen is if dual-format players become very common.
AndrewW Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Its Australia man, we're still too busy watching Paul Hogan movies on B&W TVs. well we would if panasung had his way ...
Tweet Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 The future of any of the formats won't be determined at this early stage of the marketing campaign regardless of how much advertising goes on here for either format. Australia is such a small market to these big corporations that we barely get consideration when it comes to product marketing. So don't be anxious for the lack of presentation of HD DVD in the shops, Blu-ray barely raises an eyebrow even with all the advertising and promotion it has had. HD DVD is selling without the need for in store promotion as it is. The big hurdle for HD DVD/Blu-ray is DVD, before these HD formats can really make any real head way HD has to effectively compete with DVD as a format, especially when DVD is so easy to copy. That very fact is the 'big fix' for DVD. C.M
