extremeaudiowa Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 Hi all, This might seem like a dumb question. I only have 1 optical input on my kenwood amp / reciever and i want to split it to have 3 devices plugged into it. so i have 3 questions 1. Is it possible? 2. Is there a loss of quality? 3. Is there a product available to do this without a switch box (So it is passive) I dont want to get up and have to switch it over, I know if i have more than one item turned on at a time it will conflict but i am very carefull with that. Sorry for the newbie question, I am buying a Pioneer VSX2016 Amplifier shortly but until then i just want an easy fix Cheers Ben
pasty Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 http://dseau.resultspage.com/search.php?se...=optic+splitter this is sort of what your after?
jakes Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 You might, perhaps, be better off with this switch box from Jaycar. It will take up to 4 inputs while the splitter above will only do 1 in 2 out. There will be no loss in quality with either of these two options. While you will have to manually switch the Jaycar switch, i'm not sure you'll find a 3-way passive splitter.
extremeaudiowa Posted March 14, 2007 Author Posted March 14, 2007 http://dseau.resultspage.com/search.php?se...=optic+splitterthis is sort of what your after? yeah but a 3 way version.... If they are available Ive got Xbox360, HD Set top Box & Foxtel..... And the switch box would work but i kinda wanted to stay passive... (For the Mrs Sake as she gets confused with all the inputs and what not. She could just turn on the Plasma, Turn on the Amp & turn on the Fox or Whatever and it would work. Could i use 2 of the previous splitters????? to make 3 inputs or is that pushing the light too far
jakes Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 Could i use 2 of the previous splitters????? to make 3 inputs or is that pushing the light too far I guess you could use 2 splitters (or at least try them). You'd have to ensure that only one source was on at a time (not sure what might happen if two were on simultaneously - it would either not work at all, or might break something?). In any case, Dick Smith have a 14 day return policy. You could always get 2 and try them and if it doesn't work return them. In relation to ease of use - you might want to consider whether it's any simpler to explain to your partner that the other two sources have to be off to ensure that audio works, than it is to label the switch so she knows which one is which?

jakes Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 so much simpler just to tell her to have one switched off fair enough.
jel Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 fair enough. The HD Set top Box & Foxtel don't need an optical connection as the're effectively only stereo, so given it's only for the short term, I'd just use an analouge connection for those 2.

Are you sure as we watch quite a few Movies on both HD Free to Air & Foxtel Box office and they do say the transmit in Dolby Digital 5.1. also shows like Lost & heros Transmit in 5.1
wheelz Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 I think your better off with the jaycar one in the link rather than the dick smith one,you could just label in1,in,2,in3 as stb, fox, dvd im sure you other half would be able to work out which one the switch needed to be on, its not that hard.

extremeaudiowa Posted March 14, 2007 Author Posted March 14, 2007 theres always plan B:Its a great excuse to upgrade your amp Thats right Pioneer VSX2016..... Now all i need is a HDMI Xbox360 & HDMI Foxtel LOL But the amp upscales anyway
Titanic Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 Thats rightPioneer VSX2016..... Now all i need is a HDMI Xbox360 & HDMI Foxtel LOL But the amp upscales anyway I have the Jaycar Splitter. Works fine . Even with a Yamaha RX2700 you can run out of Optical connections. I have always been uneasy putting signals through swiching boxes but to me in this case there is no degredation of sound. The price of the splitter was somewhat of a surprise as well at $19.95 with a Toslink cable as well A Bargain!
