50" - Panasonic Vs Lg Vs Samsung Vs Pioneer

Recommended Posts

My father has asked me to recommend a 50" replacement TV. I had recently asked on here for a 42" HDTV and Panasonic was highly recommended, particularly for how well it upscaled lower res signals.

Anyway, my father doesn't particularly like the general frame look of the Panasonic (forgetting the actual TV picture quality!). He's listed a few other models, I thought maybe you guys could tell me pros or cons?!?!

Panasonic TH-50PV60A ($3000)

Samsung ??

LG's LG50PC1D ($3500)

Pioneer's PDP-507XDA.($5000) (includes delivery/install/mounting brackets/5yr warranty)

I understand the LG & Pioneer have built in HDTV tuners - a small advantage, though everything goes through his amp before it goes to the TV, so this may actually be a negative for him. He also doesn't need speakers.

Thanks for any and all thoughts and advice.

If you want quality stick with Pioneer and Panasonic and forget the others IMHO.

Also if you don't like the aesthetics of the tradiitional Pio and Pana's, have a look at the commercial variations. Neither come with tuners but they have a lot of other advantages IMO including better looks.

You pay a bit more for the Pio's but they come with 5 year warranty and installation. The commercial Pioneer comes with an ISF calibration for free too, but they tend to be $500 or so more so is it really free!

There are some threads that are worth a read. Just search on Panasonic or Pioneer. They are not hard to find.

I think it's an outrage that LG are pricing themselves anywhere near Panasonic.....seems like a marketing ploy to dupe people into believing that LG's engineers are as good as Panasonic's.

I think the consensus is that the Pioneer is the best, but it also costs more.......to me the Pana is the best 50in bar none if we add value to the mix.

The big four in plasmas are generally considered to be Fujitsu, Pioneer, Hitachi and Panasonic. Not necessarily, but possibly, in that order. Bangs for buck though, the Pansonic is very good and is very popular.

You can get the 507 for less than that. Don't know about the others.

Agree with those for best quality.....the Hitachi 55" is great value

Normally Panasonic reacts to the LG pricing in the market to retain its market share.

I would agree that bang for buck Panasonic is the way to go, but it seems the Samsung 50" is going cheap out there as well...

Bought a Pio for the inlaws from JB for $4500 at the weekend. First price they quoted was $4750, think it was marked at $5300

Check the Hitachi website, now offering $500 Cash back till 30/04/07 on the 55". Coupled with pricing posted by others this panel could be had at around $4k. I paid $5400.00 in early December 06.

Best to check for yourself - but when I compared the 50pv60a with the 507 pioneer, I preferred the panasonic. On the HD loop material at HN, the panny was smoother (less artifacts on straight edges etc) while still having great sharpness and clarity. I preferred colors on the panasonic too.

Now I didn't run through all the 507's menu items, perhaps the setup was not optimal - but the salesman was talking up it's PQ until I pointed out the flaws above. Certainly setup is everything with these TV's.

BTW, I have my 50pv60a connected up to the cheap philips 7200 HD STB ($198 from BigW and a screaming bargain IMO). The PQ is magnificent on HD material - far, far better than anything I saw in the demo setups at HN etc. SD channels are much less impressive - not sure if this is because of the STB scaler (i use the 1080i output) or simply the broadcast quality. There is, of course, a lot of variation in the latter.

If space and seating permits the 55" is excellent value, IMO. It's scalar is so good that you don't need to worry about upscaling DVD players, number (and placement) of inputs is second to none AFAIK, SD card input, etc.

Only issue is no internal digital tuner, two analogue tuners but these are a waste of space.

Maybe you should list what he will be connecting to it so we can hopefully provide more qualified input.

I was really keen on the hitachi 55" also, but had a look at the Pio 507. Althought the 55" looks enormous, its picture was rather soft compared to the Pioneer. Both were running the channel 7 HD loop ( HD!!? ). I take it's cos the same res on a bigger display = bigger pixels on the 55"?

Now I'm tempted to pull the trigger on the 507. Smaller I know, but when I'll be sitting 3.2 meters away, I'm sure this thing will be plenty big, compared to my KVHR36M31.

HN Moorabbin in Melb, has it at $4999. Hoping I can get close to $4500 on 24months interest free!! They also had the 55" hitachi at $4299 - after $500 cashback.
