fallen Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Well thankfully my 64” Sony CRT is about to die. It’s started to turn off for no reason. The other night the whole screen turned green for a minute and now every person looks like they have a “fake tan” orange glow. So on with the good news I’m about to buy 2 x 42” Plasma with an in-built HD tuner (one is for my parents) and I’m almost set on the LG 42PC1DG. I was in at a HN in Brisbane and got the sales guy down to $2100 each which I think is pretty darn good. Usage will be mainly Foxtel Digital, DVDs and the occasional sports on free to air HD. I’ve done the research on firmware versions regarding the HD \ SD tuner and I’m cool with that. So here are the questions: 1) Is there any thing else I should know about the LG 42PC1DG that I should know about? (preferably from owners) 2) Is there another brand in with similar specs and cost that I should be considering at? Cheers Fallen
bac Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Is there another brand in with similar specs and cost that I should be considering at? The Panasonic TH-42PX600A is now being haggled down to around $2,250 and is probably a better all-round performer than the LG. Cheers, BAC
Guest nato Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 (edited) fallen, I own a LG 42PC1DG tv. The only reason I bought mine was because it was in my budget. I would have preferred the Panasonic TH-42PX600A because of better black levels (dark movies you need the brightness turned all the way up to see detail with the LG 42PC1DG) I have no issues with the inbuilt tuner(I have the latest version),skin tones are good. There is the odd occurance of banding/dithering in gradually fading or shaded tones. The EPG only works for ONE channel at a time, so you have to change to each channel one at a time to see the current program and the following program on each station. I hope this helps your choice. when I get back home tonight I'll double check my picture settings and let you know what they are. Edited March 14, 2007 by nato
Brazzwald Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 A couple of weekends ago JB Hi Fi Westfield Chermside had a 2 day special on a weekend only for this model, $1996 i think it was (give or take $2). Pretty sure it was limited to that weekend, but maybe worth a try for that price at your local JB... But I would also suggest the Pana PX600A if your budget can stretch. Brazzwald
fallen Posted March 14, 2007 Author Posted March 14, 2007 Thanks bac, nato and Brazzwald I went in HN again and asked about the 600A. The rep will do $2438 each and 5 year warranty for $190 a pop. The LG is a better looking unit - the silver of the Pana looks pretty dinky. The misses is voting for the LG (mainly on cost and looks) I'm not sure if I will notice the picture quality difference and if it is worth an extra $338. I'm also a little concerned about the "purple snake" effect people are talking about. Sure the LG has the HD tuner issue but seems to be the lesser of two evils.
bertzz99 Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 A mate of mine owns a TV repair business and he says that LG plasma's are the most frequent visitors of all plasma brands. I would spend the extra and get a "Made in Japan" Pana PX600A.
fallen Posted March 14, 2007 Author Posted March 14, 2007 Chalk (LG) and Cheese (Panasonic) IMHO. I take it that you consider Cheese better than Chalk? I've never been able to decide

Fallen its all relative, do you want a better quality tv then you will have to spend a bit more money.I paid over $3600 for a 42inch panasonic 14 months ago and that was 20% off rrp.Needed a set top box too. How often are you going to buy a new tv?$338 extra is not much really and you may well be able to do better than that; check out the "how much did you pay panasonic plasma" thread in this section.Check out last 5-10 pages for current prices paid.
eckles Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 Playing around with both tv's. But I don't own them, I just see both TV's while working. Personally i'd go for the panasonic.
achjimmy Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Fallen In reviewing probably 30-40 sets IMO the pana is a far better set/PQ but if in looking around you can’t see a better picture go for it. Why don’t you check out the SD LG with built in tuner. If you honestly cant see a difference between Pana & LG you may not have an issue with SD v HD and can save even further. Besides obvious pixel structure, SD sets give an excellent picture with detail and contrast IMO and are dirt-cheap.
fallen Posted March 15, 2007 Author Posted March 15, 2007 I'm leaning towards the Panasonic TH-42PX600A because it is a better all round performer. It's such a shame that the Panasonic case looks so dinky. Unfortunately I'm limited to HN stores in Brisbane (got some vouchers to spend). I've got 1 HN store down to $5256 for 2 x TH-42PX600A and 2 x 5yr warranties. Now it’s just a matter of trying getting them under the magical $5000 mark.
whiteknightoz Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 If you are in a union, try the union shopper as they use Harvey Norman and they will get you a better price than you can haggle. when getting a price DONT mention the vouchers Not sure if this interest you but you can get the 50" HD Samsung for around the same dollars.. check out http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=47420&st=0
