gavincato Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 hey guys, I just bought an amp with hdmi, and as I'm getting a ps3 soon I want to get a tv with hdmi for bluray movies. my current tv is this one ; http://www.castel.com.au/Toshiba/ProductDe...uctCode=42WP36P Do you think it has any real value on the 2nd hand market? I'm not expecting anywhere near what I paid for it, but also wouldn't try to sell it if I would only get something cruddy for it as it is a bloody nice tv. Any thoughts on how much it would be worth? I fear the influx of cheap 42" plasmas may work against me! cheers Gav
dvduser Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 As it's only 480 I'd keep it as a spare. These things are dropping in price like the proverbial birds crap from the sky.

gavincato Posted March 13, 2007 Author Posted March 13, 2007 mate for $500 I wouldn't give you the cables let alone the tv. I'll give ya $500
jakes Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 mate for $500 I wouldn't give you the cables let alone the tv. I wouldn't think that you can expect much more than this. Sure you paid a lot for it originally, but as you point out the price of cheap SD plasmas has come down significantly recently. Even though your panel is a brand-name unit, I assume it's out of warranty (people will at least get 12 months on a $1200 yum cha panel), and it doesn't appear to have any digital inputs (which you might see as a bit pointless on an SD panel, but that's the way the market is moving). So you may have to moderate your expectations as to what it's now worth, or just keep it as a second display as dvduser suggests.
Guest EZYHD Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Yeah $500 is ridiculous. Can buy a new 42" HD Brand name for about $2500 these days, I'll take a stab at $1500?. If you must sell I'd try your local paper and friends first, if all fails try eBay of course. Would be better if you kept it and maybe hang it on a wall somewhere in your house.
jakes Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Sorry, accidental double post. (Although, it would appear that apparently foxtail may not agree with me, so maybe you should try what he suggests to see if you get a more satisfactory price).
wheelz Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I would say around $800 - $1000(max)seen as you can get brand new SD pana's for about $1300.Ebay would be best bet. Foxtail its a SD panel you can buy them brand new with a stb with the $1500 you were talking.

gavincato Posted March 13, 2007 Author Posted March 13, 2007 yeah maybe I should hang it up in bedroom. if I got $1500 for it I'd sell it but I can understand someone buying a brand new nonamer over this guy.
wheelz Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 sejanus if it makes you feel any better i paid just over $5000 for my SD panel,i'd be lucky to get $1000 for it now. Best off keeping it,sounds good when telling mates my spare/bedroom tv is a plasma
jokiin Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 yeah maybe I should hang it up in bedroom. if I got $1500 for it I'd sell it but I can understand someone buying a brand new nonamer over this guy. People have been picking up brand new SD Pansonics for $1600, that's the kind of thing you can benchmark your price off, not the original price paid, the no name panels are being picked up below 1k now through retail outlets
Guest EZYHD Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Do like they do in Las Vegas put it in the bathroom, well at least its different. Keep the fan on while watching it though!
gavincato Posted March 13, 2007 Author Posted March 13, 2007 heh - this guy cost me $5100 which was actually staff price at harvey norman at the time as my father in law works there. At the time the rrp was $7899 from memory. It really sucks it is worth so little, it's a beautiful display. If it had hdmi I'd be happy to use it for years. sejanus if it makes you feel any better i paid just over $5000 for my SD panel,i'd be lucky to get $1000 for it now. jokiin Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 If it had hdmi I'd be happy to use it for years. if it had HDMI there would be no benefit, still only 480 lines

Don't worry about what you paid, a good friend in Sydney paid $12.5 k for his 50" plasma when he bought it a few years back.

No doubt it's a great TV and scales really well. Why not keep the screen and try the PS3 using component video to start with? A quick look at wikipedia tells me that there is an official PS3 component cable but the PS2 one will also work on the PS3.Then again, I have the feeling you've already been well bitten by the upgrade bug... Sony would love you to buy a sexy new full HD bravia to match your shiny new PS3. Their marketing timing is again impeccable .
gavincato Posted March 13, 2007 Author Posted March 13, 2007 yep i can run component to it, it was more the bluray movies I was interested in though. No doubt it's a great TV and scales really well. nico6 Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 Yeah, but they do release BR movies on DVD don't they? I'll buy Full HD when there is a high percentage of content (from all sources) in 1080, and when my mates stop telling me how much they like my (yum cha) SD picture. Do your mates still love your SD Toshy's PQ? Of course they do.
