Aloysius
I can see the GUI on my display - HD Hitachi - but I don't get the short messages displayed. Is there a low tech action I can take to make this happen?
wheelz
I know with my older yamaha you can turn the osd on or off,do you have it off?
Aloysius
I know with my older yamaha you can turn the osd on or off,do you have it off? No mate - even volume changes don't show "on screen" when watching TV - they do when watching DVD's! I think it's got something to do with the resolution of the signal being different to that generated by the receiver for OSD.

Aloysius
OK - if anyone is remotely interested - Rang Yamaha tech help - suggestion was something like: "replace your component connection HD STB to AVR with S video connection - AVR will then upscale that signal to suit best results and you will probably get to see the short messages you are looking for" I did that and it did that! Though technically you've made a backward step if you're using your AVR to switch your DVD player etc. Component is technically the better connection method than Svideo though if you cant notice any difference, stay happy with the S-Video. If you cant see any difference Aloysius with s video go with what azz123 says. But as you have a hd screen you need component [at the least] to send a hi def signal. Is it possible for you to run a composite as well for the osd display ? Its a big tradeoff [ volume + or- type messages] or the superior picture you paid for hd wise.Good luck
Aloysius
Yes I understand the superior connection point, and it goes against the grain to go backwards - on the other hand I'm really hard pressed to see any difference in the quality of the display. It's only the STB to AVR connexion involved. But hey a little more looking first - it's not hard to plug the component cables back in
