No it doesn't. There are a wide number of 'commercial' apps out their for copying a DVD, if it was all illegal, then the software companies would have been shut down long ago.

Besides, its not the tool thats illegal, its what you do with it. Otherwise the VCR would have been removed from sale decades ago and PVR's wouldn't even exists.

PS. Not that I would ever pay for any software to 'copy' a DVD, there are plenty of free ones out there to do it.

"..also spurred a...well organised..anti-piracy campaign.

"The fight to prevent...appears to be paying off."

I remember when I lived in Maryborough QLD in the early 80s. Suddenly VCRs became available (Ahhh - Betamax) .. Suddenly everybody could not only record shows but FFWD through the ads. The local tv Station for Maryborough and Bundaberg put out a press release in the Maryborough Chronicle saying that they had just bought an American system that would broadcast a code making it impossible to tape their shows (just remembered -- they were called "Sunshine Television") some pre-nerd wrote to the Chronicle explaining that American TV was NTSC and we were PAL so the system would probably not work.

Never heard anything more.

Quarter of a century later they're still thrashing the issue to death. As previous poster.... yaawn.

This pretty much sums it up.

DVD Shrink does the job of erasing the anti piracy advert if you dont want to be reminded that you could be costing an industry a wax job on a white stretch limo...(thats exactly what I meant Austen  )

If the DVD has been shrunk and had its menus cropped out it can hardly be called a copy can it?

Seen the way they live? .....theyyyy can afford it

The first movie was alright but that second one was just rubbish, Depp wasn't so good and Knightly now seems to believe she can act.

Oh not that sort of Pirate

I haven't seen that ad but as someone already pointed out, technically it's still illegal to record something off TV (if you do you're only allowed to watch it once, then you 'have' to delete it), but obviously VCRs and DVD recorders are still allowed to be sold.

There's a very interesting article out there somewhere were Philip Ruddock outlines what is still illegal under copyright laws, which includes:

Watching a recorded program more than once. and

Transferring music to an MP3 player (you're only allowed to "shift" the data once, ie CD to computer only)
