Softcox
edit: Please read a few posts down, I have the sub now ------ Hi, I'm kinda new here so I hope this is the right place to ask! I recently inherited an old (20 years at least) stereo amp, and some decent quality bookshelf speakers. The amp was actually built from a kit but seems to still be working 100% (pictures below). The speakers are also home-made: old Kenwood enclosures with some OK 8" woofers and good Vifa tweeters. (pics of amp + specs) http://img266.imageshack.us/my.php?image=imagestq0.jpg http://img386.imageshack.us/my.php?image=imagesgr0.jpg http://img386.imageshack.us/my.php?image=imagesdj4.jpg Basically I want to get a sub to complement this. The setup is going to be used in a small room and mostly for music listening (various types). I was thinking of getting this So, 1) Will the sub connect fine to the receiver considering the receiver has no special sub-out connection? 2) Is the DSE sub the best deal for the $$$ 3) What sort of cable should I use here (don't say Monster...) 4) I think the sub has (filtered?) high-level outputs, should I put the main speakers in series with the sub or plugged normally straight into the receiver Any help would be greatly appreciated. Dont know if the DSE sub would be to good for music listening. For 2 ch you might be better checking out DSE cheaper floor standers and foregoing a sub? For 2 ch you might be better checking out DSE cheaper floor standers and foregoing a sub? Thing is, I've already got the decent set of main speakers. I watch action tv/movies a bit too and some bassy music so I'm pretty sure I want the sub. Thanks for the suggestion though
jakes
You'll need high-level inputs to connect with if the receiver doesn't have a sub-out. You basically connect your speaker wires to the inputs on the sub, then speakers from the high-level outs on the sub. Without high-level inputs you're not going to be able to do what you want it to. You'd just use basic speaker wire (which can cost anything from 50c p/m to thousands). Stuff costing a few dollars p/m will probably do you fine. In relation to quality, I've never heard/used this sub so you can ignore what i have toy, but I'm guessing you won't get much performance wise. While it'll probably be fine for, say reinforcing, base for home theatre (particularly in a small room), it's unlikely to much good for music. Ideally, you'd be able to audition it to see if you're happy with it's output, but I'm not sure that most Dick Smith stores are set up to allow this. Maybe at a Powerhouse...? Softcox
Well I'm not usually an impulse buyer but I just went and got the DSE sub, last one in store and I got 5% off Below is a pic of the in/outputs http://img246.imageshack.us/my.php?image=untitled1er4.jpg So I have a few options here: a) Plug main speakers and sub all into receiver on their own channels. Sub uses high-in inputs. Plug sub into receiver as above, but speakers into high-out lines on sub (in series) c) Same as minus the receiver (I don't see how this would work). Plug computer line out straight into sub's line-in inputs. Main speakers go from sub's high-out outputs. I assume a) is the best choice here, unless there is something significant to gain from running the mains from the high-level outputs on the back of the sub. Thanks again for any help
