Hotchip 160pvr Editing Issue

Recommended Posts

Been shopping for a proper twin tuner PVR after my digicrystal died a few days ago. Ended up buying a Hotchip from JB for $434. I specifically asked after making a recording can you edit the recording to delete parts from the start and end and this is something my wife loved with digicrystal as she would record a few hours of kids TV and then only keep a selected portion for later viewing over coming months. They said yes so we bought it. However after trying it out I can find no way to do it. In the manual it says In the Recorded Channel list, you can edit the recorded channels using the F1 key but as far as I can see it only allows you to rename the recording. Otherwise its seems very good although it does run quite hot.

Anybody know how to do it or have we been told a furphy?

Also looked at:

Mediastar - could not find one at 6 stores I vsisted and another 4 I rang up.

DSE - does not allow editing.

Arion - wife wanted one now.

DGTech - does not allow edit.

Topfield - could not find one under $600 that had at least 120GB and transfered recordings to PC.

You saved $66 compared to its nearest rival in terms of price, and you gained a whole load of hassle. Hope you can at least get a refund if you can prove that the advertising was misleading. Shouldve taken the advice of one of the other posters in return to your earlier question. But on the bright side, at least you have a new toy

Quite happy to pay the extra $66 but could not wait for delivery of an Arion, could not find a Mediastar, and the topfields were $700 for a USB version with decent size HDD. I don't have a lot of faith in believing salesman and that is why I asked the direct question with the salesman and got him to confirm with someone else. What can you do, but I will be taking it back if I can't edit. On the plus side it seems a really good unit with a good remote, display interface, and features and in the pounding I have given it in 24 hours no bugs.

Some advertising I have seen clearly state “Edit recorded files” when all that can be done is file renaming. I’d rather buy elsewhere than put up with dishonest salespeople. Telling you what you want to hear, if it has no factual bases, is a lie IMO.

I went through this awhile back on this forum with someone. The other party was under the impression that since his single tuner Digenius based PVR had rudimentary file editing, newer PVRs would too. Well I’m here to tell you none of the Chinese twin tuner PVRs that I have seen do. I regret to say that unlike even the cheapest HDD DVDRs, that usually have adequate file editing facilities, it seems that most if not all the low to middle priced twin tuner PVRs do not. Also you might hear the claim, mostly from those with a professional interest. "File editing is not a priority with Add skipping and Top and Tailing available" (not seen a lower- middle priced twin tuner PVR that can T&T ether). However this is a copout since little can be done if the OEM did not include it whilst the HW resources were being allocated. That information would have been available to the wholesaler/retailer long before they produced advertising and printed the packaging.

A further consideration is with the gutless processors sometimes used by PVRs, control can be problematic, especially IR remotes. Making the use of remote controlled editing applications, such as YesDVD often used by LSI, difficult to say the least.

Anyhow since you have USB connectivity you at least have easy PC editing available to you. :D
