Spero D. Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 Just saw this on AVS. Any PS3 owners tested this? If it works it could make it worthwhile to those whom want to get an Aussie PS3- Just got a rental copy of "The Omen". As a Fox disc it is coded to region B. I have a region A PS3. Sure enough, the disc comes up with a warning on playing back that it is the wrong region. However, pressing the "Top Menu" button on the BD remote accesses the menu!. The disc then plays back properly. Anyone else tried this? I have firmware 1.54.

Chesty Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 LOL, that would be awesome if that worked.Unfortunately I don't have any region B discs to test out. Andrew. Neither do i but that would be histerical...i doubt it would be that easy though...
sulimo Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 Interesting. Speaking of dealing with the region issue of the PS3, I was recently told that several places in Melbourne had some kind of solution. Can't confirm it though or whether it solves region issue with DVD, BluRay or both. Or even where in Melbourne. Perhaps someone more in touch with Melbourne modding circles can find out / knows more.
brett134 Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 This would be great if true... but if it is true i bet it is fixed with a firmware update... I've updated to 1.54 but have yet to test it to see if i get the freeze bug... has anyone else upgraded to 1.54? if so can they tell me if they get the freeze bug or not during BD play. I will test it out next week myself when work quites down a bit. would be interesting to see what others have found though. Cheers

I see no point in "fixing" dvd region coding on import machines. They have no PAL compatibility so what would be the point?

Kirium Posted March 11, 2007 Posted March 11, 2007 Neither do i but that would be histerical...i doubt it would be that easy though... If it was true, expect a mandatory firmware update any day now from Sony to "enhance your PS3 experience"
delarge Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 I have a Japanese PS3. In relation to Standard Def DVDs, I put in a U.S. region 1 DVD and the PS3 reported that it was the wrong region. I hit the 'Top Menu' button and it took me to the DVD menu. I tried a region 2 UK DVD and the PS3 reported that it couldn't playback PAL. The 'Top Menu' trick didn't work, but I tried for interest sake. Now...a question.....should this trick make an Australian PS3 multiregion for all DVDs by pressing the 'Top Menu' button? I assume the Australian PS3 will have NTSC compatibility? Might have to test it out. Adam.

delarge Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 ...where is the 'top menu' button... ...sorry...ignore....on the remote as the 1st post indicates... hehe oops....I should have mentioned that in my post, but got excited when the trick worked.
Taki Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 You guys who are getting Dvd's from Quickflix should try getting a region coded Aussie Blu-Ray disc and see if that trick lets you use it on an import PS3.
Gogo1503561024 Posted March 13, 2007 Posted March 13, 2007 holy ****, it actually works? did you try with any bluray, delarge? As for the SDDVD, they are locked with region code and ntsc/PAL encoding. Prob a 90% chance that the PAL is locked also and not able to play ntsc encode... why would they do it only the ntsc version and not PAL... If this is confirmed to work with bluray, I can sense a new order for a bluray remote very soon

Prob a 90% chance that the PAL is locked also and not able to play ntsc encode... why would they do it only the ntsc version and not PAL... Most 'Multi-Region' DVDs are actually NTSC - so I doubt the PS3 would disable NTSC playback. Every other PAL DVD player (including the PS2) can play NTSC DVDs. Even multiregion DVDs nade in Australia are usually NTSC for that reason (ie, we can play both, Americans can only play NTSC). Which means Yes - if the 'trick' still works on the Aussie PS3 - we should have an (almost) multiregion PS3. If it works we will have: Multiregion capable: - PS3 Games - Blu-ray Movies - DVD Movies (PAL & NTSC) PAL only: - PS2 Games (the ones that actually work) - PSone Games Fingers crossed....

I'd consider getting an Oz PS3 if it was "multi-region" on DVD and Blu Ray. The $999 price tag is a bit of an ouch after getting a Japanese model. I'd also avoid updating the machine if possible because I'm sure Sony will try and rectify the issue. Like the PSP, future games will most probably have mandatory updates. It annoys me.
AndrewW Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Like the PSP, future games will most probably have mandatory updates. It annoys me. The first time I tried to play F1 it forced an update on me. I had no Internet connection at the time, the update was on the game disc. Andrew.
Nova Phoenix Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 A region-free PS3, at least as far as BR/DVD goes would be awesome. Sony would try and counter it though. By releasing an update that destroys any workarounds. Of course, you can always choose NOT to update. But they may be under-handed and sneakily intergrate it into a backwards compatibility update! EVIL!!

EVIL!! Its the studio and game makers that implement "region cdoing" ie. Not all BD titles have region coding http://bluray.lindsite.dk/
AndrewW Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Sony would try and counter it though. By releasing an update that destroys any workarounds. Of course, you can always choose NOT to update. And they could easily do that by bundling mandatory firmware upgrades with new games as per my post above about the Formula 1 game.
