Hi Guys,

I just found this review on the Yamaha.

Looks very good overall.

http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/receive...receiver-review

I was surprised to read this

Editorial Note about the Impedance Selector Switch

I recommend the "8 ohms or more" setting even for 4-ohm speakers of moderate efficiency (>87dB SPL). Yamaha includes a" 6-ohm" setting to satisfy UL heat dissipation requirements when driving 4-ohm loads, as well as easing consumer concerns about driving low impedance loads. These switches step down voltage feed to the power sections which can limit dynamics and overall fidelity. My advice is to keep the switch set to "8 ohms or more" regardless of the impedance of your speakers and ensure proper ventilation of the Receiver. As you can see in the test results, using the “6 ohm or more” setting reduced the power as much as 45% and caused clipping at lower power levels, which if driven too hard for a sustained period of time can damage your speakers.

Anyone got any comments on this ?

I'm asking in particular as the Krix speakers I am looking at are rated as 4 ohms for the mains and 6 ohms for the center and rears.

Cheers,

Andrew.

Based on the Krix speakers youre thinking about, I would leave the 2700 set to the default 8 Ohm setting, as Audioholics state.

Thanks Mark.

Without taking this too far off topic, I just want to check that I understand this correctly:

Lower impedance rating means the amp has to work harder to drive the speaker.

Choosing the 6 ohm setting on the amp reduces the current output, so that the amp does not overheat when driving lower impedance speakers.

Is there any risk to either amp or speakers by doing as suggested (ie leaving it on the 8 ohm setting) ?

Are there any warning signs I should look out for ?

I'd hate to break my new toys

Cheers,

Andrew.

My Richter speakers are all 6 ohms and I leave the 2700 setting on the default 8 ohm setting. Ive had both Zone 2 and 3 amplifiers on at the same time as the main amp (loud) and Ive never had an issue. You should be fine mate!

UPDATE:

OK, I've spoken to the retailer.

Due to the dynamics of the deal, the offer closes at 5pm midday todaySunday (edited to give people a chance to get on board, but this is definitely the cut-off point).

So please contact me if you are interested.

I am about to send a PM with updated details to everyone who has registered an interest in the GB.

Cheers,

Andrew.

G'day Mark,

Interesting to learn from your experience here. I have a pair of 4 ohm speakers that I run in my 7.1 setup and I brought this article to the attention of Yamaha recently and the tech person there was adamant that audioholoics 'didn't know what they were talking about' and that I must use the 6 ohm setting on my 2700, to ensure no damage to my amp. as a result, i have left it on 6ohm but there is a clear difference in power dynamics compared to the the 8 ohm default setting.

Which setting do you think is giving you better dynamics, thr 6 or the 8?

GB's have been requested here before and have been a complete failure, apart from the VP30. For all the hassles in trying to get a minimum of 10+ people together I think it's just a complete waste of time and effort.

I disagree

I have participated in all three that I have been aware of* - the Denon 3910, VP30 (with later ABT102 upgrade GB) and the JVC HDA1. I find not only do they save $, but they create a great group of enthusiasts who become your font of knowledge on these products so we get the best out of them. I also enjoy the enthusiasm and hype generated on the forum if you become part of the wave. Its all good fun

(I was actually unaware of the HDpvrt7000 and HDex1 GB's until it was mentioned in this thread- probably would have considered them at least, based on my positive experiences)

Yes this is what I would do too

Clipping the amp into speakers will cause most $ damage IMO

You will hear it as harsh sound (unless you are drunk at your own party of course  ) and want to turn down the irritation.

It's also bloody hard work.

I've spent the best part of 2 full days on this, and its only a little group buy

The biggest pain is the 100 message limit for PMs, you'd be amazed how quickly that fills up.

The 8 ohm default setting gives me the better dynamics Mark and according to them this setting is a big no no with muy 4 ohm speakers.......sorry about not making that clear in my earlier post.

The 8 Ohm setting will give you the most headroom, so I would leave it at 8 Ohms. While Yamaha said otherwise, Gene (and Cliff) at audioholics isnt just another schmuck who knows nothing, he is highly revered in the industry.

UPDATE:

All concerned, please check your PM (or email) for the formalities of payment etc.

This is definitely going to happen, and it's a cracking price.

For those that haven't registered interest yet, get moving because I can't accept any more names after midday Sunday (to give me time to collate the orders and pass them to the retailer first thing Monday morning).

Cheers,

Andrew.

PS: I know I said upfront I wasn't making anything out of this deal. And I didn't lie. There are some perks though

5 Boxes of Acoustic pleasure

This store is real, the stock is real, the price is great.

Busy night ahead of me :D

Andrew.

edit: the observant might notice the wall patch that still needs painting  and the logitech Z-5500 speakers that the krix are replacing :P

The Equinox are a beaut little speaker and in some respects I think they give the Lyrix a run for their money. I was going down the Krix track but the floor standers just did nothing for me, I auditioned the Lyrix and Symphonix speakers but both left me wanting more. I do have the Centrix which is great and again I really was impressed with the Equinox.

Good luck with the PB it really is a cracking price, I am sure you will all be over the moon with it.

We are all jealous (read envious as well) of your set-up mate.

Thanks Lyle,

More pics to come later on once I can get 5 minutes without the kids trying to climb on the lyrix :D

Now I know why I have a strong gate on the HT room.

Anyway, I've been having a bit of a play, full review coming up later, maybe tonight.

But I found a really cool feature this morning.

In the past, it has been really annoying that for the HD-A1, it will not play at all without a valid HDCP connection. This is annoying because you can listen to say a concert HD DVD without having the projector going.

Anyway, this morning I decided to try out the musical qualities of the Krix speakers, and was quite suprised to find that I could play the HD DVD without having the projector on.

It looks as though the HDCP handshaking between the HD-A1 and the 2700B is enough to satisfy the player and off it goes.

btw, The Eagles sounds great on the krix (I bought them knowing full well that they are an HT speaker, but they sound pretty good musically to me).

Cheers,

Andrew.
