G'day,

I've got a Sony 50" 3LCD 1280x720p panel, and I'm wondering about the following:

Would SD source broadcast on HD (upscaled to 720p by broadcaster and shown natively at 720p by panel) look better (generally) than SD broadcast at 576p and upscaled by the panel to 720p?

I think that is what is happening, right? I'm currently using my SD toppy for watching the teev, and I'm wondering if I'll notice any improvement in SD content if I used HD tuners instead.

Not with the above set up (for the money).

G'day,

... or 576p or 1080i or whatever is currently called "HD" these days.

I think it mostly depends on how you currently connect the SD stb.

If currently s-video then going to a HD stb with 1080i/720p component connection will provide better pq, even on SD sources.

If currently RGB or component 576i, improvement may not be as noticeable but still worth doing IMO.

Try out with one from DSE, if not better you can return for a refund.

G'day,

I have a brand new unopened Sony HD STB for sale if anyone is interested.

Not me -- I'm going the "HTPC with mutiple HD tuners" path. Dunno if I need as grunty a graphics card as your Nvidia 8800 for a 1280x720 panel, however, or even if a such a grunty graphics card will make much of a difference for SD content anyway.

Although I do like the "buy a HD STB and return it" approach suggested above to see if any difference in SD content is observable...
