complectus Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 I've been saving up for a new TV for a while now; as it's nearly Easter I'm wondering if I should wait til then for the sales that always seem to happen around the long weekends & other holidays... If I do, will I really get it cheaper than i might if i haggle hard today? If prices are indeed cheaper at these times, how long after the holidays, generally, do the special prices last? I should add that waiting a few weeks longer for something better or for a better price is not a problem. This TV will last me at least 5 yrs hopefully so another few weeks wait is nothing, really. I will have saved the $3200-ish it's likely to cost for a Panasonic TH-50PV60A + ext. warranty by the end of next week. Should I buy it then? Will it be cheaper at Easter? Will the 600A be the same price around Easter? When will the 700-series be released? How much will it be? Will my brain explode if I ask one more question? LOL If you have any insight into any of the topics above (especially the general one of the topic's title), please enlighten me. Thanks.
dvduser Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 No matter when you buy it, it will be cheaper afterwards. Just plain old common sense, as over time things cost less.
complectus Posted March 9, 2007 Author Posted March 9, 2007 No matter when you buy it, it will be cheaper afterwards. Just plain old common sense, as over time things cost less. Yes I get that. I suppose the real question is - do the Super Mega Holiday Clearout Once In A Lifetime Sales that always happen on long weekends actually get you a better price, or are they just hot-air marketing? Perhaps I just answered my own question...

Generally you might pick up a bargain on items they really want shifted. I've seen other items (at HN) actually go up in price, but still marked as 'price for this weekend only' on the sticker. Of course they are not lying. After the weekend it will be cheaper.... I guess they want to cash in on the buying frenzy that so called sales encite. My advice. If you are happy with the screen, and happy with the price, just buy it, enjoy it, and don't look back. Personally I would go in to a shop later in the day, go pick out a sale dude, and say, "I've got a budget of $3100 that I can't go over. Can you do this PV screen and warrenty for that" By giving them the budget they know there's no point pushing over that or trying to monster you. Sure, you've shown you hand which you can't haggle down, but there's no problem in that if YOU are happy with that price. There secret is in knowing a reasonable budget to hit them with.
Pixels Posted March 9, 2007 Posted March 9, 2007 My first dvd burner [sony dru500a] cost me nearly $800. 12 months later - worth zero, couldn't give it away!! Does that bother me - not the least!!

It should, you should've got at least $50 for it. Whenever you buy any electronic equipment, don't look at brouchers for a good 6 months or you may be disappointed.
-Anthony- Posted March 10, 2007 Posted March 10, 2007 I think it pays to do research online. Search for the cheapest prices and provide them to the store. I'm sure most will at least come close (depending on store). Goodguys are very good at doing this.

I exaggerate a little, just illustrating a point Certainly wouldn't get $50 for it now, you can buy a new dual layer for that much and it will be more than 5 x faster. The point is, if you sit on the fence waiting for the best technology at the best price, you'll never buy anything
kodaz Posted March 11, 2007 Posted March 11, 2007 Pretty sure for most products it is just hype. I think it is just a way for them to move the stock that is either out of date or overstocked. Best bet is to negoiate with a sales person. You can get good buys that way.
Hussla Posted March 11, 2007 Posted March 11, 2007 From a sales perspective all I can say is to customers is BARGAIN BARGAIN BARGAIN But dont expect that you can get a brand new Panasonic 42" SD for under $1000.......... Good deals are always there even when there's no "official sales on" you just need to get lucky and get the right salesman and you need to put your haggling cap on
