Sbs Digital Reception Near Sydney Cbd

Recommended Posts

I just bought a beautiful Panasonic HD Tuner Integrated Plasma TV and it is great except for I cannot seem to tune in SBS Digital!

ABC/2, 7, 9, 10 all come in perfectly and have 100% signal strength so I am very puzzled as to why SBS does not tune in???

I have tried a manual search on DVB Channel 34 as well as an auto search and there is nothing there either!

My analogue SBS comes in ok just not the digital version which is really annoying!

I live in a block of units very close to the Sydney CBD and am connected to a communal aerial so not sure if that makes a difference?

Any help is much appreciated...

I take it you also cannot receive digital 44 (channel 35)?

All other channels are VHF, those two are UHF.

The problem is most likely either the antenna, or the distribution system is not equipped for those channels.

In apartment buildings with a master antenna system, it is common practice to have single channel amplifiers for each of the channels required. Although you may have good analogue SBS reception, it's quite possible that the SBS digital channel amp has not been installed, or is faulty.

Have you asked if any other residents are having the same SBS digital reception problems?

I'd suggest contacting your building manager to have the antenna distribution system checked out.

wot 'bout Ch 31 analogue?

I cannot receive Ch 31 Analogue or Ch 44 Digital either!

Does that then point to something wrong or missing with the Communal Aerial?

Any idea if it would be a couple of hundred dollars to fix or are we talking thousands as I think the Body Corporate are not going to swing for thousands of dollars just to receive 1 digital channel.

I have no analogue or digital reception without plugging into the communal aerial.

Is there any other way I could receive it, maybe an internal antenna?

As per my previous post, it is most likely your building antenna distribution system is not equiped for the additional channels.

Cost would depend on what is required. Without knowing that, it's impossible to advise. You will need to ask the body corporate management.

As for indoor antennas, some have success with them, most don't. Results will vary depending on your location such as which level you are on, other buildings/terrain between you and the transmitters etc.

It may be possible to receive the UHF translators from Kings Cross better than the main VHF transmitters with an indoor antenna.

Only one way to find out. Try one.

Thanks for the answer...

I think it is really bad that all channels except SBS broadcast on VHF and therefore 2 different types of equipment are required to receive them!

I doubt very much that the Body Corporate in my building would spend loads of cash or time on getting 1 digital channel for 1 person when the other 5 function brilliantly!

I seem to have the same problem, I receive 7/9/10/ABC/2 and not SBS from a common roof antenna socket in my room. I have bought a digital only TV tuner card and am thinking of returning it if nothing else is possible. Does anyone know if there is any antenna I can build/ buy that would not be too expensive, that would let me receive SBS?

In the Sydney CBD, SBS is on a Single Frequency network, so for SBS, you need an antenna that's as directional as possible, and does either band 3 and band 4, or a seperate band 3 and seperate band 4.

Note: SBS, Ch31, D44 will come through on band 4, while 7, 9, 10, ABC will be on Band 3

reni10 & scynaz,

D44 is the name it has for datacasting this is not the real channel used.

Read Get the Best Reception, Sydney and read the links.

The best solution is to read the link in the above post to Apartments. If this is not possible, it may be better to get one of the antennas recommended in the above post to Kings Cross. They are no where near as large as the type used for Gore Hill/Willoughby. Use this antenna indoors.
